i find that anime in the 2000's have really taken a turn to the worst... i think they must of done a survey and discovered more guys watch it then girls so their logic was 'hey lets make massive boobed chicks wearing nothing get into fights and loose their top' and tha's what they've done.

with that being said i'd look for someone the 90's and 80's stuff like Robotech, 12 kingdoms and Escaflowne they're all good and dont favour either gender! Claymore is another good anime but it favors girls but theres actually a reason behind why they do

@leet: you still have an anime character as an avatar though so the love must still be there. >XD
That's a common misconception for people new to Touhou Project; like the OP said, it's not anime. It's a game series. That avi of his one of the character portraits from a game.

Keep in mind that games and anime (from all nations) don't have that much overlap.
'Anime' has a rather broad meaning. It could be the exact definition of "Japanese animation" or media could be simply called anime because of art design resembling the Japanese form. And yes my term 'anime' meant the latter one.

EDIT: And Spirited Away wins the award as the most catchy anime I've ever watched. Others are like meh right now especially the last half-decade. *cough* boobs
It's still somewhat off, as the term "anime" is simply Japanese shorthand for "animeshon", which is the Japanese phonetic equivalent of our own "animation" since there's no separate Japanese term for it. It'd be better just to call the static images - such as the OP's avi - "cartoons".

But now I'm arguing semantics. And I'm sure you couldn't care less about what I think.

Never noticed this in the action series I've watched. Baccano! had a roughly equally measured cast, whereas Berserk had a very predominantly male cast. Black Lagoon did feature an all-star female cast though. So far Deadman Wonderland seems to keep up a diverse cast in this regard too.

Never did watch a proper magical girl show though, and I don't think I'd care much for them. All I've watched is Puni Puni Poemy - an absurd parody of the genre like its mother series - and the excellent Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which was apparently also quite a deviation from form... Gen Urobuchi style!

only problem i found with that was it went a bit over the top and got a bit stupid. battle robots bigger than a galaxy? no.
Why do i feel like i'm the only person here who thinks the more melodrama/OTTness the better?

I suppose that's why Code Geass is my favourite anime of all time, Lelouch could make sleeping look melodramatic.

Magical girl animes, huh? Have you given Puella Magi Madoka Magica a look? It's one of my favorite animes ever, and I'm not too keen on the magical girl animes, either.
It's sort of a deconstruction of the magical girl sub-genre, as Evangelion is the deconstruction of the Mecha sub-genre.
At least watch up to episode 3 to see if you like it, but if you don't, that's fine, although it's not entirely action-based.

But like most people said, there are plenty of action shows out there.

Oh my god, you didn't say that did you?
There are plenty action animes out there.
And srly, what have you been watching dude? You said only the Big 3 (One Pice, Naruto and Bleach) and IS (that is NOT action, just saying). Glad you posted here, in /a/ you would have been trolled.

The thing is, you want action animes, go look for them, a lot of good souls here already posted the ones i would recommend

Baccano!
Code Geass
Full Metal Alchemist - Brotherhood
Monster
Cowboy Bepop
Shigurui
Trigun
And i think you should give a try to Higurashi

Most anime shows that do mostly action, use magical girls for it. And where there's one, they're bound to cover the whole show, pulling off all the special effects and world-saving while everyone else (i.e. anyone who has hit puberty or has a Y chromosome) cheers invisibly from the sidelines.
Not true
See Code Geass
Full Metal Alchemist

over the top can be good, there are plenty of battles where it was an awesome over the top (e.g the final Ichigo vs Ulquiorra battle) but Guren Lagan was so far over the top it ended up becoming stupid

I would say Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan, but that has quite a lot of fanservice... Still if you like action, it doesn't get in the way of the massive explosions or the incredibly epic science.
I was going to suggest that as well. How about Panty and Stocking then?
Rebuild of Evangelion? No robots, just big robots and monsters! And more action than the series.

Anyway, on the topic of Infinite Stratos; Laura Bodewig.
I'll be in my bunk.

The only anime I like is anime that could work if it wasn't anime. i.e "regular" TV show. I hate all of the high-action over the top thing that Japan does. But the more subtle ones, especially ones that have some underlying theme(s) other than these people are bad kill them with fire from this giant magical space mech. Those high-school "slice of life" ones are unbearable too. So in general I just hate anime. But if that it what somebody likes, then I'm not going to judge them on it. It's a form of media, and like the rest of media, it's all subjective.

Edit:

Oh, and a bit more anime oriented towards gearheads wouldn't go amiss either. I like powerslides and V8s, real or cartoon.
Ohh god yes, this. I think the problem with it is that it doesn't really fit in with Japan's conceptulisation with power (see: Extra Credits: The myth of the gun) although the one that does spring to mind is Initial D. The love side-plot filler was unbearable, but the action racing was fun to watch. More like that (but not too much like it) would be great. I'm surprised at the almost complete lack of motoring anime though, Initial D is actually the only one I can think of that does racing in a realisticish setting.

That's a video game character.

Edit: It appears that somebody already said this, so I might as well devote the rest of this post to answering some of your comments.

Fair cop. I mean, since I don't watch it, I can't know for sure, right? I mean, I made my own recommendation thread on this exact same topic, and you wouldn't believe how many people still told me Puella Magi Madoka Magica and...that other one. I guess I'm just too judgmental.

Another fair cop. I seem to be more deserving of those than any other human being on the planet, for whatever reason. So, for sake of argument, here's every anime I've actually seen for myself, and how much of it:

-One Piece: One episode. Nothing much happens in it, but I've got a recommendation for it off someone I actually know. (Subbed)
-Excel Saga: The entire series. This was before I really started forming opinions on genres. I'm actually pretty glad for that. (Subbed)
-Sonic X: The first series, and a few episodes of the second. Not that bad, but could be a lot better than it is. (A mix of the two)
-Vampire Knight: One episode, and I've also read some of the manga. And I got a recommendation for it from a family member. (Dubbed)
-Evangelion: First eight episodes. Seems pretty interesting, but I've also heard it's a complete head-screw at the end... (Subbed)
-Infinite Stratos: Three episodes, out of order. That's probably why I've made so many comments about it. And despite what the guy above said, you are telling me why I'm wrong in this case. (Subbed)

Also:
-Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei: This one, I kind of picked up tangentially. I was at my school's anime club for a different reason, and this was what was on. Somehow, I actually managed to find it pretty interesting. (Subbed)

So maybe I was exaggerating about the genre thing... Still, I just don't do other genres as much. That's just my opinion.

Learn to read. I am not interested in fanservice, and anyway, I think she's a Jerk-ass!Sue. And I can never remember her name anyway, which just proves my dislike further.

I'm with you on IS, it's just a run-of-the-mill harem comedy (not even a comedy really) that's poorly disguised as a pseudo-mech series. You're not missing anything there.

Anyway, if the above list is everything you've seen, you haven't seen much at all. I'll stick with my original recommendations, thankee.

However, I'll add Baccano!, Black Lagoon & Deadman Wonderland (care of Imperator_DK), as well as Kurozuka if you're looking for something vampire related, and actually good.

I sorta have the same problem, I've been trying to watch Animes, but i don't have a lot of time for it, a good place to watch it, and most recommendations i get come from the only 2 people I know who watch animes, who happen be sorta Yaoi fangirls. As such I've only watched Gurren lagann.

maybe you should dig around a little there are ALLOT of OVA,s/Anime,s that have 6-26 episodes like Gurren Lagann (27 and one movie) and it,s prototype Gunbuster (6 episodes and one movie) both are non-gender orientated (but feature fanservice)

I'm too tired to read over all the suggestions so far, but I do have one that transcended everything I thought I liked about anime.

Berserk.

Watched the show, read the manga, and never was I bored. Unapologetic action, violence, and character development galore. Very graphic though--for some that is a deal breaker. But I do highly recommend Berserk. I loved every gory minute of it.
