Try Gurren Lagann, it's essentially the exact opposite of Evangelion, but in a very, very, VERY good way.

Code Geass is also a good choice, think Death Note with hyper death robots.

Also, if you like Gundam Wing you should try Gundam 00, it's very similar to Wing in a good way.
all I have to say to that is this

I would recommend Robotech: Macross Saga and definitely the original gundam if you like mechanime. Casshern Sins and Fist of the North Star are also quite good. If you liked Fullmetal alchemist then Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood may interest you, it's kind of the same story but it more closely follows the manga and there's enough of a difference to be like a whole new experience. There's a bunch more I could throw at you but idk what you'd be interested in.
speeking of FMA brotherhood, the dub is comming on AS this saterday

anyway, my top 5

Code Geass dub (Great voice acting, amazing story, and awesome charecters)
G Gundam (got to love the 1 to 1 control mechs)
both FMAs (The anime is kinda meh near the end, but brotherhood looks amazing)
Gurren Laggan (For no other reason then Kamina giving us the prases dont believe in yourself, believe in me believing in you! and WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?!"
and Digimon seasons one and two (i know it was a kids anime here and there, but i still love it.)

What? No Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi? No Azumanga Daioh? No Lucky Star? No Detroit Metal City? All these are comedies, which don't really run in line with the genre that you seem heavily interested in.

For something a bit romantic, try Honey & Clover, Nodame Cantabile, and Chobits.

For some more action oriented series, try Gundam 08th MS Team, Last Exile, and the new FMA (this one follows the manga more, so I think its superior).

A few more that I don't really know how to classify, but have personally enjoyed: Ergo Proxy, Moyashimon, A Certain Scientific Rail Gun (I didn't like Index, but found this to be pretty good).

EDIT: Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Anime is one that I almost forgot. I think this is a must see. Trippiest art style I've seen from any anime. It's based off the novel. It's set in a Sci Fi world, where people fly around in space ships and duels are fought using giant mechs. Vengeance. Is. Sweet.

Why are you buying them? Just by a large hardrive and consult this:
Along with any anime focussed sites, anime forum pages, and/or /a/ on any chan site you like.

Hmm...based on that list, I'd recommend looking up Gurren Lagann, Rurouni Kenshin (the first OVA, Trust and Betrayal, at the least), and Outlaw Star.

Also, my standard recommendation of Princess Tutu still holds. I'd recommend Nanoha, but I wouldn't want to undercut a random person.
Thanks for not undercutting me, though if you did it would be my fault since I saw this thread when it was at 4 replies. Of course, my obligatory Nanoha disclaimer: it's not all that good for the first 4 or 5 episodes. It picks up at episode 6, though, and really gets awesome by around 9, exponentially increasing said awesomeness by A's. Also, I've seen and liked StrikerS from the first half, but a lot of people hate it, and even I acknowledge it would benefit from being shortened, especially before the White Devil Incident.

Also, they may have been said, but Gurren Lagann, Haruhi (first season), and Higurashi are great choices.

Come on really? No one mentions DBZ? Bleach is also good, Full Metal Alchemist is cool too. I haven't seen anime in a while, so I don't know of a lot of new ones.
He stated that he didn't want anything over 50 episodes. None of those fit the conditions. At least the first two don't. I'm not sure about the lattermost.

Anyway, I'd suggest Outlaw Star. It's not a very long series (even by the conditions outlined by the OP), but it oozes style and character like very few other shows I've seen.

As has already been mentioned, I recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, but I also recommend the second season, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai. The total of these two seasons is 50 episodes (26, 24).
It is good for blood, gore, comedy, and such.
Hell, I just love it, I need no other reason to recommend it.

Oh, almost forgot. If you can stand the really dumb music scoring, overly emo English voice dubbing and "extended action" dialogue, Claymore is a good series. Every time I watch it I want to fanedit the crap out of it- there's such a gem of a show going to waste in there.
Aside from Raki, who I goddamn hate, I don't really see what you mean with the voices. They all seem pretty fine really. I think the fight scenes are great too, though they do have too much talking when they should really be attacking (you'd think they'd turn around a lot sooner and lamp them or something), but they're both minor inconveniences really, because that show is fucking awesome.

bleach is only good until they go to the soul place then LOOK OUT

but if your in to new characters popping out from every corner that are ALL given needless back story then...
And it keeps getting worse, but it generlly is ok, it got better when they went to Hueco Mundo.

Loveless only spans 12 eps long but that was good.
Tenshi in Tokyo was good...

But if all else fails you can get a good laugh when you watch Shoujo Animes

I haven't been a huge watcher of Anime for something like 4 years now. But I've been getting Dragon Ball cause it's part of my childhood.

Any anime I would recommend would be films.

Metropolis, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Gunbuster(really obscure but a good show)... that's all I can think of at the moment. If it was good short Sci-Fi shows I'd be on the ball. sorry.

I would recommend (in no particular order, and with lengths in []):

[5 + movie]Afro Samurai (Be willing to stretch what counts as anime)

[12]Kannazuki No Miko (also called Destiny of Shrine Maiden, yuri, and not for everyone, I'm the last person who would be expected to be a fan of this)

[13Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory

[24]Chrono Crusade

[36]Super Dimension Fortress Macross (Robotech Macross before it was americanized, does have some, but not too much, cussing, which is how it should be done Killzone 2)

Although I wouldn't reccomend buying them, (as it might not be your thing), anime's you should watch are:

-Baccano
-To Love Ru
-Akikan
-Hayate The Combat Butler, (has loads of refernces, and is very funny at times, but is over the 50 episode limit, but awesome none-the-less)
-Shakagan No Shana, (just under 50 episodes! XD)

Needless has already been suggested, but I also agree that this is a very good series to watch.

As for old classics, (that span over 50 episodes, but you can always watch them online), I would also reccomend Tenchi Muyo, and Ranma, (which has a ridiculous no. of episodes, and I've only seen like 15 or so, but its very good stuff, and its obvious a lot of modern animes are inspired by it).

I might be a bit of a purist on the voices because to me, the Japanese actors make the characters almost completely different from the English interpretation. This works in every anime I watch for me, but take our Claymores for this example. They're female Terminators, horribly scarred early in life and raised to be inhuman killers under the total control of even more inhumanly cold masters.

The way the Japanese actors deliver - emotionally twisted to crippled for the "normal" Claymores, friggin scary crazy for the ones that have gone all the way round the bend - is just perfect for the story to me. The cynicism and snake-coldness of their masters comes through well too. It all just works for me.

By contrast, the American voice actors and actresses just can't seem to not put emotion into their lines. That's how all American actors are trained, after all. But that just doesn't seem to fit the characters for me.

Glad to hear you liked the show, anyways. If said fanedit project ever comes to pass, I'll hook you up for a preview :)
