Oh, almost forgot. If you can stand the really dumb music scoring, overly emo English voice dubbing and "extended action" dialogue, Claymore is a good series. Every time I watch it I want to fanedit the crap out of it- there's such a gem of a show going to waste in there.

Aside from Raki, who I goddamn hate, I don't really see what you mean with the voices. They all seem pretty fine really. I think the fight scenes are great too, though they do have too much talking when they should really be attacking (you'd think they'd turn around a lot sooner and lamp them or something), but they're both minor inconveniences really, because that show is fucking awesome.

I might be a bit of a purist on the voices because to me, the Japanese actors make the characters almost completely different from the English interpretation. This works in every anime I watch for me, but take our Claymores for this example. They're female Terminators, horribly scarred early in life and raised to be inhuman killers under the total control of even more inhumanly cold masters.

The way the Japanese actors deliver - emotionally twisted to crippled for the "normal" Claymores, friggin scary crazy for the ones that have gone all the way round the bend - is just perfect for the story to me. The cynicism and snake-coldness of their masters comes through well too. It all just works for me.

By contrast, the American voice actors and actresses just can't seem to not put emotion into their lines. That's how all American actors are trained, after all. But that just doesn't seem to fit the characters for me.

Ha, sounds good. I know what you mean for voices and the like, though to be honest, I don't really mind the lack of talent of voice actors for the most part, in an animé it's usually the story that gets me. I don't watch subs for the reason that it's just too dang distracting, so i'm not really a purist i guess! I did watch the sub for elfen lied though, everyone was just way too annoying in the english dub. Ghost in the shell has that too...
I know why someone would be bothered though, it's hardly ever done completely right, and I'm sure if i saw the sub first I wouldn't be able to watch it.

Death Note and Code Geass are my favorite animes of all time. I don't know if you'll like them but it can't hurt to try.

I forgot to mention the Samurai X movies. If you want some real tragedy, get the original Vol. 1 Trust and Vol. 2 Betrayal movies. For an extra few turns of the wakizashi, get Vol. 4 - Remembrance. The Vol. 3 movie is done according to the Rurouni Kenshin TV show so it's way different from 1,2 and 4, so if you get it, expect a different experience altogether.

I don't think the world is really ready for a good anime with perfect dubbing and translation. Too much awesome for too many people :/ Cowboy Bebop and Last Exile came pretty close though - great efforts.

Backstoryriffic, I actually started watching subs when I accidentally turned them on and walked away to make some food while the show started. I was watching it while I made my food and noticed that the English translation was more different from the dialogue than I would have thought. In fact - it was WAY different, saying a lot that the characters didn't say in English.

So I decided to watch the subbed version just to see how far it went, and of course the English language was way distracting, so I changed that to Japanese. Hey, I could deal for one show, right?

I couldn't believe just how much the entire show changed. The character I hated to hear even speak 'cause he sounded like a whiny, self-absorbed egomaniac in English (Ed from FMA, just fyi) instead sounded like a guy who - had depth. I could quickly tell that this guy was both positive and headstrong but was using a brash attitude to cover up his self-doubts. And not a trace of whine in his voice, ever - I could tell that the character was way too proud to whine. The subs added a lot of depth too. I could see how the characters were both saying and not saying things, and the English translation just blows by that.

So yeah, I'm a convert I would love it if we had real translations, with English dubbers that really matched the voices and tone of the Japanese cast. Maybe someday the world will be ready for that much awesome....

With all of these goes; the manga is ALWAYS (slightly) better. I own all these manga (and many more).

EDIT: Someone said Ergo Proxy. Sorry, but I've watched it and found it too lenghty, boring and lacking a proper end ... Just my opinion.
