It disappoints me how the Escapist community never EVER seems to recommended Gundam.
The Gundam shows you need to watch are:
Mobile Suit Gundam
08th MS Team
Mobile Suit Gundam: 0080
Mobile Suit Gundam: 0083
Zeta Gundam

and stay far, far, FAR away from Gundam SEED.

Other than that you really need to watch Code Geass. Seriously, that show sits at the very top of my "Favorite anime's of all time" followed closely by Zeta Gundam.

EDIT: OH! If you like giant robots and Batman you'll friggin love Big-O

I wouldn't just write FLCL, Outlaw Star, and Hellsing off. They are really great anime (ok maybe not so much Hellsing because of the whole Alucard thing). The whole pirate king thing in FLCL is just a framing device that gives the main character a reason to be there but otherwise doesn't mean anything until the last episode. Besides, there's only 6 of them. Outlaw star has very little of what you described. Yes, it has the gathering of companions but ultimate destruction and goverments/corporations? Not so much. The end is kind of the way you described it but not really. It is quite similar to Gurren Lagann, actually. Not in story but in style.

Long story short, don't base these or any anime on a wiki description then write them off. Watch the first few episodes and then decide from that if you don't like them.
Outlaw Star is the classic journey story.
I don't enjoy these types of animes.
FLCL just looks... different. Like insane different.

Try Black Butler. Haven't gotten to the second season (which I hear is pretty dark), but the first season is fantastic. Another good one is Air Gear, but I believe it violates some of your stipulations; regardless it's worth at least a check out. Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple is great too.

First off, Ghost in the Shell is a must for everyone, tough it does get pretty philosophical at times.

As far as personal recommendations go, Baccano! is just awesome.

Here's also a very helpful list that I've been going trough:
and it hasn't failed to deliver what the descriptions say.

EDIT: Too big infact, here's a link in case someones interested http://i.imgur.com/ZS2Zx.jpg

I'd check out Black Lagoon, it's a really cool show that is based in reality, with a lot of action/grindhouse inspiration behind it.

Other than that, there's no really much I can think of that might fit your tastes.

If you won't watch Outlaw Star, at least watch FLCL. You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not watching. It moves along at 100 mph and gets really hectic at times but if you pay attention, it's a surprisingly deep story. Especially poignant given that it's only 6 episodes long. The art is great, animation is superb, and the characters are memorable.

The lack of any mention of Gundam in that list is very, very, very disappointing.
Regardless if people don't want to admit it, Mobile Suit Gundam is the father of the "realistic mecha" genra.
Hell I'm willing to bet that if Gundam didn't exist neither would, Patlabor, Macross, etc., etc.

I completely forgot about Black Butler.
I saw the first season but the constant cut to comedy and then to action annoyed me considerably.

maybe that means you should, you know, watch something else maybe? Maybe some other cartoons?
May I recommend Adventure Time or The Misadventures of Flapjack.

I can't say anything for Outlaw Star because I've never seen it, but I do highly recommend FLCL. It is absolutely absurd, but it is great and short. It's only 6 episodes so even if some how you hate it then its not like you wasted a bunch of life away on it.

EDIT: It also has one of my favorite soundtracks for an anime so far.

Ghost in the Shell - Sci-fi action/thriller with some heavy philosophical themes, essential

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - TV anime based on the above. A little "softer" and (thankfully) a little more materialist, entirely worth it. The film is still better, but that's because it's such an astounding piece of work in the first place.

It's safe to skip the second movie (Innocence) and the second season of the tv anime (2nd GiG). They're not very good.

Would also recommend Dennou Coil. Starts off pretty slow, becomes one of the best things I've ever seen.

... Depends on how seriously you take English history (or how 'English' you are). If you answer with 'very' to either: avoid. (No disrespect to your recommendation @TheBoltman)

OT: Forgot about Ghost in the Shell (all of it, except the second film...) - interesting look at cybercrime/crime fighting in general... though I think someone's already beaten me to it
And Durarara!! - multi-plot, eccentric, Baccano!-esque, Gaelic mythology in Tokyo, rather wacky but definitely different...

EDIT: Perhaps I can save you the bother of asking for recommendations:

Go to ANN [http://www.animenewsnetwork.co.uk/encyclopedia/anime], look up an anime you did like and use the genre finder.

A small description of each would be nice, since it's a hassle searching everything on my google search engine.
*Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Two guys from an underground village use a mini-mecha they found buried in the earth to fight back against a tyrannical ruler that wants to keep human beings trapped underground. Spirals out from there, though.
*Legend of the Legendary Heroes: A man with a demon's eye that sometimes takes control of him and wields terrifying amounts of power is charged by the king, an old friend from military academy, to search for relics of a fabled group of heroes that once saved the world from an invasion of dark powers.
*The Irresponsible Captain Tylor: A man who's only redeeming quality seems to be absurd amounts of luck is put in command of the most dysfunctional ship crew in the fleet.
*Dead Leaves: Two amnesiacs are thrown into a super high security prison on the moon and begin trying to escape
*Brave King GaoGaiGar: A cross between Transformers and Power Rangers, pretty much.
*Demonbane: Cthulu mythos combined with giant robots.
*Kodomo no Jikan: First time teacher has to deal with a student's crush on him, unfortunately the student is very mature for her age and devious to boot. Don't worry, it in no way promotes pedophilia.
*Bokurano: a group of kids are tasked to protect earth from invading enemies with a giant robot. The catch: If they lose, earth is destroyed, but if they win, the pilot for that battle dies.
*FLCL/Fooley Cooley: Robots sprouting from a kid's head, and a strange lady on a vespa that fights with a guitar. It's hard to explain, but it's still pretty good XP
*Macademi Wasshoi: Hilarious comedy about a boy at a wizard's academy who accidentally summons a mysterious little girl during a botched summoning exam. More about the characters than the magic, though the magic allows for very odd circumstances to arise on a regular basis.
*Abenobashi: two kids travel to parody versions of their home city, covering a wide range of genres, from giant robots, to dinosaurs, to american movies.

Very short descriptions, but hopefully they give you a good enough idea of what to expect. If you want more info, try looking them up on Wikipedia or TVtropes.

Honestly how many threads do you see asking for Cartoon Recommendations? And how many of them get filled up with people suggesting Anime? I'd rather we just made a Request Forum and throw all these junk threads in there.

I wouldn't know about that, since I weren't involved in the making of that list in any way or, infact, seen any Gundam. :p

Incidentally, where exactly would one start watching the damn goliath?
Everytime I'm interested wikipedias list of all the series just slaps me down like a little *****.

You know, I haven't been into anime in a long time so I'm not really "Hip with the cool kids" on whats popular now days, but some shows I liked when I watched it was:

FLCL/Fooly Cooly
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Elfen Lied
Outlaw Star
Samurai Champloo
Hellsing
Chobbits
Paranormal Agent

There was more but any I can think of other than these have already been listed so... Yeah. Hope you find a show you end up enjoying.

I don't enjoy giant robots, therefore I won't watch this.
