perhaps a magical girl anime?

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha
.
I, as the resident Nanoha fanboy, endorse this suggestion with the reservation that it starts out kinda boring.

As for some plotless, cutsy series, Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh are good choices (though the former doesn't pick up until episode 5; I don't know what got me through that food conversation). Also, as the guy I quoted mentioned but I cut out, Haruhi is an excellent choice, but first season only.

try "welcome to the N.H.K". not only is half of it made on drugs[citation needed] but it has a deep story that is really good, but don't let her read the manga. sure, it's good, but there is a fair amount of boobie in it.
I got the first volume of the NHK and i learned a lot of new "terms" thanks to it. Haven't seen the anime but after reading vol 1 i don't know whether to watch it or not.

-Im a fan of hellsing but i doubt your girlfriend would like that but like some others said lucky star maybe...

Perfect Blue. Ok, ok, not really. (It's great, but it's not a gift.)

Cowboy Bebop. You can't hate it.

Her taste in movies includes extremely cheesy, corny, girly stuff like the Notebook and Love, Actually. She also likes Airplane and Fight Club.

Thanks for your help!!!
In that case, Blood+, The first series of Pretty Cure, and maybe G Gundam, if she's adventurous.

Cant believe no one suggested this yet so here goes.

Nodame Cantabile, an extremely lighthearted music/romance/comedy josei (targeted at woman) series. I usually stray away from shoujo and josei stuff but this one is really good; take a look at it

The one I always use for normal non-nerdy people is Baccano, because it deviates from the norm of anime not to make it weirder but in turn more believable and immerses the viewer into this story.

Chances are she wont like it if she doesn't think it's credible.

Just saying.
^This

There's a saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink"

Try something more close to home, like Megas XLR, I know it's not a typical 'anime', but it's got a more western humor to it and it kind of like baby's first anime.

Funny thing is my brother got his girl into anime by making her watch bible black who knew
I always found it funny that the chain on the titular book was bound with a Star of David and not a pentagram

Fruits Basket or Minami-ke might be a good place to start as well, or Ghost tin the shell

Ranma 1/2

or

Ohh Myy Meee Strawberry Eggs

(every girl I know that likes anime loves these)

You might not like it unless you like plot twists. Ranma 1/2 is made by the lady that does Inuyasha so it might be up your alley, and has more combat.

I'll repeat the obvious: Ouran, Fruits Basket, pretty much any of the reverse-harem types, since they usually have male characters carefully crafted to emotionally manipulate women (in the same way the cheesy romcoms do). Even I found myself drawn in by Fruits Basket. And if all else fails, try something like Naruto. You'd be surprised how many girls like that show, if only because Sasuke is, like, totally hot.

I do like some of Takahata's work and I know there are people who love the overwrought emotionally manipulative film but it's not even close to being as great as Miyazaki's work.
This explains a lot! I'm in total agreement with you here - I always thought GotF was heavy-handed with the emotional sledgehammer, and nowhere near the simple magic of what I thought was Miyazaki's other works. Glad to discover I'm not just a monster with a heart of ice, as I've been led to believe.

Baka to Test Shokanju. It's a series that is currently running, even though it is incomplete, it has already gone onto my list of favourites. The series is hilarious.

Fate Stay Night is also good. It is a fairly solid series although perhaps pressing a little too much on the magical side.

I could reccommend a few more, but you would need to give more info on what other things she is into.
