I am interested in watching an anime, series or otherwise. What animes do you know of that are good for a first timer? If you can, make sure it's on Netflix because I'm not really willing to buy any DVDs.

Thanks =)

Cowboy Bebop is a great place to start, and I'm sure you could find the movie on Netflix, if nothing else.

Death Note, FMA(I prefer Brotherhood over the original), Yu Yu Hakusho, Welcome to the NHK, and Azumanga Daioh.

I say that's diverse enough and not too weird...

Last Exile, it's currently on instant play too, so you don't have to wait for the dvd's to get to you.
same with Clannad.

but really it comes down to what type of movies you enjoy, since there are anime comedies, anime dramas, horror, etc...

You make a good point. I enjoy action type movies with some drama mixed in.

Death Note. Definately Death Note.

Hopefully that'll destroy any hidden prejudices that Anime is just for five year olds.

Better yet, it's on youtube.

Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Monster, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop. Just to name a few. Pick whichever one you want.

Cowboy Bebop. Very mature, good action, and good drama. You seriously can't go wrong with it, plus Steven Blum's voice is just damn sexy.

Outlaw Star, Tenchi Muyo (Universe), Hellsing, The Strongest Disciple Kenichi, and Gundam Wing are the ones that I highly recommend.

many of the suggested animes would work then

the drawback is: either you'll like it or you won't, an example, I liked the robotech stuff, but didn't enjoy anything along the lines of gundam, they're both action/mecha/dramas, but I just liked one more than the other.

Action: Cowboy Bebop, Trigun.
These are pretty much all you need. I'd suggest some Nabeshin anime but those are a bit much for a first-timer.
yeah... excel saga and puni puni peomi are a bit much for a first-timer.

Yeah. Nerima Daikon Brothers is nearly as bad.

...oh! I know a perfect Nabeshin anime for a beginner. The Wallflower. It is a delicious mixture of comedy, romance, horror, and reverse-harem (four boys, one girl).
