What are some of the most hated or despised characters in anime or manga and why? I really really don't like Donquixote Doflamingo from One Piece. That guy is freaking despicable, and I'm afraid of what he might do next. I also hate the Celestial Dragons from One Piece.
I mean honestly they have the nerve to not only be monumental douchebags, slave drivers and hateful people in general, but to also kill Luffy's friend because he was in the Celestial Dragon's way on the water!?
If the Celestial Dragons don't get their comeuppance by the time One Piece ends...I'm going to be unhappy.

There are plenty of truly reprehensible anime/manga characters. The problem is that they easily fall into the 'so over-the-top it becomes comical' category.

Like with the main evil dude in Now and Then, Here and There. Everything about him screams EVIL in the most ridiculous way possible. There's also Wyald from Berserk who is obviously meant to be the most vile individual you've ever seen. But it becomes so overbearing that it starts to fall back in on itself.

I think Balalaika from Black Lagoon strikes a good balance. She's undoubtedly horrible, but carries herself in such a way that she demands your respect. Her dark nature doesn't take center stage to her personality.

Excluding the One Piece characters that the OP has already mention (althought I don't hate Donquixote Doflamingo as much, in fact I kind of find him cool in a villain way as at the moment he is a powerful foe to be wrecking with and his crew as just as odd), to me that would be Nena Trinity from Gundam 00 and Griffin from Berserk.

I know one villain that perfectly fits into that category.

Dio Brando from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, to me commonly known as "Dat fucking guy".
Recently I have watched and finished JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (The two current seasons at least), and this guy would definitely fall under that banner as 'over the top', sure it can become funny after a while but I believe that Dio is a brilliant villain, sure not as brilliant as some like Johan Liebert from Monster ... but Dio ...

I think Dio is worthy of that title of villain, sure a cliche villain, but a true villain. He is stubborn enough and if you have seen the whole 2012 anime or even beyond, this guy can be a big pain in the butt.

To me he is one of those likable villains, sure he is a total dick, but you just enjoy his performance of being THE dick.

To the OP this is my nomination or as I said, Johan Liebert from Monster.

As someone else already mentioned: Dio Brando, of JoJo?s Bizarre Adventure fame, is such a sadistic, duplicitous, unsympathetic, needlessly spiteful bastard that he?s almost comically evil. Well, actually, judging by all the memes that have sprung up around him, I guess he has become comically evil.

Misa Amane in Death Note. Probably one of THE most self-centred characters in anime, she?s tsundere incarnate; a stupid, immature ***** who kills more than hundreds of people just to force a serial killer to go out with her. What's more, she has a death god who protects her with her life because...well, actually, that wasn't even fucking explained, other than that Shinigami are apparently blind to how fucked-up the majority of Death Note users - even a deceptively innocent orphaned girl - can be.

This guy, Nobuyuki Sugou

He is the antagonists for the second arc of SAO and he was created to make you hate him. Everything he does just makes you hate him more. It eventually hits the point you want the writers to stop because they are taking it too far.

Izaya Orihara from "Durarara!" - On one hand, he's a really terrible human being. On the other hand, he's a really great character.

I doubt many other people have seen this one but theres this Korean manga I read called He Was Cool and like every single character was an asshole. I think the worst is the male lead, Ji Eunsong. He makes the main character go out with him, he's possessive, violent and then just dumps her just because she doesn't do something he wants her to.

Umm, I haven't watched much proper good vs evil anime in a while now. I'm stuck in a comedy/slice of life binge (Chuunibyou is so fucking hype) + assorted Attack on Titan episodes and while Titans are horrible they ain't exactly villains are they? They're a bit too basic a lifeform for proper morality speak.

I suppose I can fall back on Code Geass' Suzaku. Yes, he's supposed to be dual protagonist "oh which of these guys is in the right" character and it works that way for a while but before long he's a walking ball of contractions and inconsistencies. At least Lelouch was consistent in his unethical plans and had an idea of where to go. Suzaku is going "oh i'll probably try to maybe do something later perhaps" in contrast Lelouch then goes "right we'll blow up this factory to hurt the Empire, therefore increasing our influence and chances of winning"

They both had goals but only Lelouch had plans. Even with his occasional mental breakdowns.

Hiromi from true tears has been just about the only official pairing I just didn't like, she puts herself and others in danger as well as nearly causing someone else to just kill themselves by being a scum bag.

Yozora from Hangani: I Don't Have Many Friends is, plain and simply, a *****. Yes, everyone in that club has their little problems and quirks, but good lord, this girl...I'm reading the English version and just finished book four. Tell me someone takes this girl down several pegs. Every time I think she's finally starting to ease up and maybe be a least a decent human being for a bit, it turns out she's just setting someone up for an even bigger fall.

Yuji Sakai when he joins Ball Masque in Shakugan no Shana. Oh man, Sasuke could take lessons from this guy. Made my skin crawl. Ugh.

Honorable mention goes to Sasuke Uchiha, of course. Someone give this baby back his bottle and go put him in his crib. The constant whining, being used by literally everyone, and triple 180 motivational switches is tiring me out.

Matoko Itou from School Days comes to mind.

Scratch that, the entire cast of School Days are horrible, horrible people.

If we're including visual novels, Fuminori Sakisaka from Saya no Uta, depending on the route you choose, becomes one of the most depraved, disgusting human beings on the planet.

Speaking of Gen Urobuchi, Scythe Master from Phantom. He's such a slimy, manipulative bastard, where every time he pops up you start clenching your fist. Kyubey from Madoka Magica is similar, except he more of a neutral force while Scythe is just pure scumbag.

Also, as for characters that I plain don't like, I really don't like the main male lead from Working! Just his attitude towards an androphobic girl and anything that isn't small and cute really makes him unlikable to me. Same with another male character, who seems to be an asshole for absolutely no reason. God, I hate that show.

I also really don't like Kirino from Oreimo. I'm fine with tsunderes, hell, I like a lot of tsunderes, but there are tsundere, and then there's bratty, childish, ungrateful little *****.

Okay okay I get it, they had to set him up as the big-bad of the next series but he wasn't even likable or interesting. I think Gen Urobuchi went a bit over-board with him on the 'hard-boiled' scale but that's just my opinion.

I dunno. She seems to fall under (like most of the main characters) a catagory of "does bad things and can be bad, but still has good aspects". Compared to some of the other people in the series, she's pretty alright.

That's only if you're on her good side though. And even then, she would have no qualms in disposing of you if she sensed you would become even the slightest inconvenience.

I mentioned her because she's completely ruthless, posing a threat to the "heroes" at several points, but she isn't maniacal like most other anime characters in the same catagory.

Blazblue actually got its own anime so now I can mention the greatest of villains! The king/god/emperor/lord of trolls everywhere!

Hazama or his actual name Yuki Terumi. One of the most evil and sadistic characters in all of gaming and now anime that you can't help but like. The anime really doesn't do him justice though.

Though I tend not to count characters who are clearly meant to be punching bags, guys who are supposed to make you hate them with everything they do when the only footage that you see of them is them doing stuff to make you hate them. I hardly even consider them characters.
A great example of this has already been mentioned, the guy from sword art online in the second half Nobuyuki Sugou.

OT: Now, I have a great love of villainy, so all of my picks have to be bad guys that annoy ME too and aren't entertaining for the most part. Gonna spoil-tag all this, just in case.

To begin with, every henchman working for the real Big Bads in the Fist of the North Star series. Virtually everyone working for Raoh/Ken-O, Shin, Souther, Kaioh, etc. is a blatant piece of shit made specifically for us to love to see how Kenshiro kills them.

Another, from Yu Yu Hakusho, would be Elder Toguro. How dickish is this? He's a shapeshifter who's really hard to kill, drags out fights in order to taunt people sadistically, and has the gall to get mad when he's beaten (twice), so that when he comes back he's there to piss off the heroes AGAIN. (Fortunately, Kurama can be evil too.)

The Anti-Spiral Boss from Gurren Lagann. Where do I even start? Eh, let's just sum it up by saying that any power derived from people dumb enough to STOP evolving is no power or way to live at all. They're just MADE of stupid and yet somehow they ended up subjugating humanity.

Here's a classic one: Karla the Grey Witch from The Record of Lodoss War. In the great war of good VS evil, she allows nobody to win, nobody to get an advantage over anybody else, and basically cheats to accomplish all of this, even to the point of striking Emperor Beld dead when he won fair-and-square in an honorable dual of kings. Oh, and her soul is held in an artifact which means she never stays dead.

Knives, from Trigun. Unfortunately for him, the Gung Ho Guns are a bit more interesting, whereas he's basically just an evil Vash who decided on human genocide because one of the crew of Project Seed didn't like him and beat him up. Whoop-de-do. I mean, I can see how he leads that into humanity overall seeing him as something of a freak, but wait 'till the whole crew revolts on ya. Gunsmoke would've been a better place to live if ya hadn't screwed it up.

Alex Rosewater from Big O. Let's see... He's the business-owning despot of Paradigm City who orders around the police and cares nothing for the not-rich people outside the domes, thinks himself to be son-of-a-god, craves power, backstabs everyone, gives Roger Smith no end of headaches, is an arrogant fuckwit, tries to burn his father alive, and when it comes down to actually USING a Megadeus, he finds out that he's actually a reject like everyone else his father tried to implant with memories of a time before 40 years ago.

Lastly, but not leastly, there is the much-made-fun-of Father Maxwell of the Hellsing series. Let's see... Supremely arrogant piece of shit who looks like he's as vampiric as Alucard, who was made fun of alot as a child (explaining so many psychological issues). Bigotted as all hell, making me wonder how the Pope even put him in charge of even the blackest and most-secret charter of that universe's Catholic Church, the Judas Iscariot Special Organization XIII. He seriously cannot have a conversation with Integra Hellsing without making some crass remark for no reason other than to do it. It's also true that his organization HELPED Millenium back in WWII, though he personally wasn't in charge of it. Still, it's a black eye for him, because NAZIS! He also has no control over Alexander Anderson, which is both funny and sad when you consider...his attempt to launch a bloody crusade against England in the middle of a war against Nazi Vampires in order to basically kill everyone there, shouting arrogant shit out of a see-through impenetrable box that - after Alucard knocks him out of the sky and he thinks he's still safe - gets broken by Anderson so that he can finally be eaten alive. The man is shit. I would kill him personally and vicerally AND I'M A CATHOLIC.

Thank you.

I know it's an old one to harp on about Shinji from Neon Genesis Evangelion, but GODDAMN! I just watched the 3 "Rebuild" movies that have come out, and I believe he may be EVEN WORSE this time around. "Hey guys, I'm just gonna leave and not pilot this Eva which humanity needs to protect it from extinction. Because, I really don't like doing it, and also I hate my dad." Fuck you Shinji.

And as long as we're talking about protagonists, Light from Death Note is just an obviously terrible person. I'm still watching it, so please don't spoilquote me, but yeah, so far he's just plain deranged. His whole "I only kill people because they're evil" schtick didn't hold for very long either.
