Afro Samurai is pretty damn good, can't go wrong with Sam Jackson and Ron Pearlman voicing the principal characters... I'd also recommend the two Ghost in the Shell feature films if you like SAC...

EDIT: You may also enjoy Record of Lodoss War, which is essentially an anime version of Dungeons & Dragons...
LOVE Afro Samurai...

New stuff from that show coming at the end of january on spike! Can't wait

I dunno how people expect me to read all these responses. I just posted the question early this morning and I got over a bajillion messages. If anyone would be willing to compile these picks into a handy list, that would be helpful...

Yay, hugs for the win.
Anyway, I'll try and see if I can find that anime somewhere on the internet, (I give up trying to find anything on DVD around here.) and I would like to know what you're way of avoiding all things popular is, I might need it sometime.
Aye, for the epic win indeed.
Mm, it shouldn't be hard to find at all. Expect weeeiiirdness. My way? Well, obviously first things to avoid are those that get popular and hyped. (ugh, can't stand hype) It's not that I try to avoid them.. I just do it by nature. And when I do watch them, I tend to.. feel slightly nauseous. Controversial ideas just appeal to me. =)

Let's see...

-Gundam 8th MS Team: Probably one of the few well-written and dramatic Gundam series to date. It's a much darker and more realistic take on the 0079 war. See also 0080:War in the Pocket.

-Gensomaden Saiyuki: A well-written spinoff of an old folk legend. Features an awesome plot involving demons, the reawakening of an ancient evil, and a dragon that can turn into a Jeep. What's not to love?

-Monster: This is my personal favorite anime of all time. Incredibly dark and amazingly deep in terms of plot. A veritable roller-coaster of well-thought-out twists. Very slow-paced, however.

-Spiral: A nice little detective-esque show. I whole-heartily recommend it.

-Prince of Tennis: Yes, a sports anime. It's incredibly well-done for one, almost no character seems thin and static, and there's enough physics-defying awesomeness to make Dragonball Z's jaw drop.

-Witch Hunter Robin: Watch it.

-Wolf's Rain: Once again: Just watch it.

I'd also recommend Trigun, Samurai Champloo, Stand Alone Complex, and Cowboy Bebop, but it seems you've already watched them.

Another thing: Be sure to watch the preceding with subs, not english dubbed. I assure you the dubbing is horrible on each and every one.

Hellsing is by far my favourite because of its over-the-top and brutal violence(no im not a bloodthirsty retard).
My only question is which do you watch, original or ultimate?

I can never tell if I like newer ideas. Thing is, I watch Harem a lot of the time, which always seems to be the same, but Love Hina and Negima just feel... They feel pretty different. Maybe I should try AIlove...

Originality does sooo much for me.
Harem is pretty fun, but can get repetitive. You, my friend, should watch Kanon. Easy to get into, too easy loving.
I will agree Love Hina and Negima are slightly different than most. A bit higher in quality, which comes with being 'relatively' new harem series that actually try.

Hellsing is great...I just think it ended to abruptly. They could have added a few more episodes

Which version? If you mean the Geneon-released originals, then agreed, it was cut short at the end with Incognito's needless appearance. In that case, watch Hellsing Ultimate as it's continuing the storyline. Also, it has Nazis. Undead Nazis. And overpowered vampires who murder helpless policemen and the aforementioned Undead Nazis. And a busty girl who helps kill Undead Nazis. It's like Call of Duty 5 but with vampires! UNDEAD NAZIS!!! Woot!

Ok for one thing if you didn't like Naruto you probably wont like Bleach of One Piece. I didn't like any of them personally

As for my suggestion Mushi-shi. Its one of about 3 or 4 anime I actually liked and its easily one of the best anime ever made.

Similarly if you like FLCL but want a more story driven experience, pick up Gurren Lagann, it's a lot of fun.
Thanks for the recommendation. I just watched the first couple of episodes and so far, I'm loving it.

Everything I would suggest is on the list already... Try Blue Submarine number 6. It isn't really a series but it is still awesome.

I also second watching Welcome to the NHK. Best anime ever in my opinoun.

Dump anime, Pick up Manga!
You will thank me someday.

Take it from the fanatic.
No stars for you, without anime we would never have FLCL, when they finally did release a manga version of it, the quality was significantly less. Haibane Renmei found true beauty and art in the anime. While I will give you the Deathnote Manga (which is hands and fists above the anime) but so many represent no significant difference in quality or material.

I always say that anime based on manga series makes up for the truncated script with the magic that animation offers. That is pretty significant, and not allowing for that particular caveat suggests fanboy pretension over an actual appreciation for the art form.

Better yet, read the manga.

Anyway I can't decide which one is better. The original has a story that veers off on a tangent after the 3rd or 4th and overall includes way too many needless characters...but it looks so damn good, and amazingly dark, just look at alucard's face sometimes. Hellsing Ultimate OVA on the other hand sticks to the story perfectly, it also maintains the dark comedy that comes up sometimes. But I don't like the visual as much, its exactly darkly realistic. But that isn't much of a flaw because it looks EXACTLY like the manga.

For those of you who are watching Ultimate and not reading the manga, let me tell you this...
ITS GOING TO GET FUCKING INSANE REAL SOON! god i love reading ahead

hopefully some of you recognize my new avatar

Alls I can think of is Now and Then, Here and There. Soul Eater, This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, and Wolf's Rain are pretty good too.
