I highly recommend Genshiken. It's about a university anime/manga/video game club, so its' kind of like looking in a mirror (for some of us at least). No combat, no magical girls, just plain hillarious.

As a minor warning, there are a lot of references to porn, though not any porn in the show itself. For any weirdo-fundies that don't even like to hear about such things, avoid at your own loss.

Also, Full Metal Panic is another great series. There's a fair amount of combat in it, but there's quite a bit of other bits to it; also, its' offshoot Full Metal Panic: Fumofu is the majority of the comedic bits left out of the manga-to-anime conversion, and is HILARIOUS. The big upside is right now you can get the whole Full Metal Panic first season for $40(US) if you look hard enough.

A good one for her might be Millennium Actress. It's actually a brilliant drama.

Peter Chung's Aeon Flux series is cool sci-fi with many "what if" scenarios spattered across the entire run. It's fun because many of the episodes have nothing really to do with each other. It's really easy to digest in small parts at whatever pace you feel like.

Perfect Blue is a pretty awesome psychological thriller.

The Animatrix is surprisingly good and very diverse.

I just finished watching Appleseed: Ex Machina and thought it was superior to the first one. You're girlfriend will likely appreciate the strong female heroine while you can drool over the fantastic visual design. Seriously, this one looks so sweet.

Other than that, you're best bet is to go to IMDB.com and peruse their top rated anime titles and pick a handful that interest you the most.

Good luck!

I'd suggest Cardcaptor Sakura, but she might not like that as the main characters are quite girly.

You should give Haibane Renmei a try. I picked up the first DVD when it came out over here in the UK, watched itwith my girlfriend, and she enjoyed it so much, I had to import the rest of the series via eBay the next day :)

I'd just like to point out that this is the one post you have made in 4 years. I am I awe of your ability to not post. That is impresive.

To be honest I always seem to start a post by quoting something I find interesting or funny. I was going to recomend Death Note. No real "Animeish" characters apart from a demon of some sort. Its a real on the edge of your seat drama/horror. You and your girl friend will probably keep on watching all night just to find out what happens next.

On second thought that might not be a good thing.

I had to read the whole thread to see if anyone had recommended this yet, and now that you have, I'll go ahead and second it. It was recommended to me by a friend who also turned me onto Hellsing, Bebop, and a few others, and I didn't even know what to expect. Very enjoyable.

I'd suggest "Fruits Basket", "Love Hina", perhaps try exposing her to some "Lain", see if that's to her taste.

For movies, I'd go for "Grave of the Fireflys", "Spirited Away", "Howl's Moving Castle", and perhaps "Ghost in the Shell".

If fighting is an option, and you want an Anime that you both have a decent chance to enjoy, "Tri-Gun", "Cowboy Bebop", and maybe "Neon Genesis Evangelion". Those all have a chunk of fighting in there, but they're pretty story driven and character based.

I dunno, it really depends on what her tastes are.

Oh, and I thought I'd warn you about a Studio Ghibli movie you shouldn't see. 'Only Yesterday'. Not offensive or anything, just REALLY boring.

I love to see what gamer guys here think girls like to watch... Fufufu...

Anyhow, I don't know if you could take it, but I really enjoyed Kokoro Library. (I still have trouble getting over the maid outfits, though... >.>)
I, personally, think Kino no Tabi would be the best compromise for the two of you.

I'll go with everyone else that has said Cowboy Bebop.

It has fighting, but it is very well done. Great soundtrack and I think it has very good character delevopment. I'd say it focuses more on how the characters interact rather than the fighting.

Ouran High School Host Club is pretty sweet. It's a screwball romantic comedy, according to the wikipedia article.

Ugh, how did I forget Magic Knight Rayearth? I picked up that anime years ago, but I still find it a great watch.
