I have three favorite animes:
-Slayers because it was my first anime ever thanks to my brother. Gonna cosplay as Zelgadis [http://crzysmansion.artchicks.org/stuff/cels/Zelgadis05.jpg] at ACen next year.
Hell yeah slayers is awesome, get's a bit formulaic at times but still a great comedy

OT: Princess Tutu: Deconstructing Magical Girl shows before Madoka made it cool. Seriously beautiful music, wonderful storybook atheistic and a great subversion of fairy tale and Magical girl Tropes. The ending is wonderfully bittersweet and the Raven King is terrifying. Plus Drosselmeyer is just plain cool.

Usagi Drop and Haibaine Renmei: Both for the same reasons: Slow thoughtful shows that tackle difficult issues:Changing lifestyles and fatherhood(Usagi drop) and Death/grief/redemption or nine hundred other things, there is a ton of symbolism open to interpretation, yet another reason to love this show (Haibane Renmei).

Baccano!: It's a fun show about fun characters having fun. It's a great time, and the prohibition era setting is cool.Baccano!'s way of telling the story is unlike anything else,it's hard to describe so I'll paraphrase the box blurb "Characters and Storylines don't cross, they collide".

It's spiritual sequel Durarara!! is an OK show but just doesn't capture that magic that Baccano! has.

Lastly Time of Eve: I simply love this show, Yasuhiro Yoshiura is an unsung genius at his craft. A great exploration of what our relationship with robots would be when they get to the point of being life like. It builds a believable world with realistic characters in what would take some people an entire season to convey,he does it in under two hours.Episode 4(Doll of Eve) is one of the most heartbreaking things I've seen. Seriously, watch anything you can by this man,it's great.

There are a few more(Penguin Drum,Revolutionary girl Utena,Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei) but I'll leave it at that. Also before everyone gets their panties in twist: I like Madoka Magica, I just don't think it's the best show ever. Still very good just not this godly show it's fans make it out to be.

I just finished the first season of High School of the Dead. Amazing. Well written and thoughtful, once you get past the cursing and panty shots.

I'm really surprised that more people don't mention Ghost in the Shell in any form when these threads pop up.

Durarara!
Death Note
Black Butler
Baccano!
Naruto (First real anime I got into)
FLCL
Gurren Lagann
Angel Beats
Trigun
Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo

Mainly Persona 4 because of the easter eggs from the game and the club scene.

I have many Animes I love, but if I had to choose... it would be Acchi Kocchi.
Definetly the cutest and funniest Anime of Anime Season 2012.

I just finished watching Angel Beats! on Blu-Ray, really enjoyed it, not just because of the comedic moments but the genuinely sad moments as well. It has also made me more wary of chairs...

Other mentions go to:
K-ON
Spice and Wolf
Lucky Star
Azumanga Daioh
Cowboy Bebop
Claymore
High School of the Dead
Welcome to the NHK

I have not watched that much anime (gee, looking at this thread I have a lot to do!), but I really liked Scrapped Princess, and When They Cry (only saw a few episodes of that one though). Oh, and I have this nostalgic liking of Record of Lodoss War.

Currently watching the Last Exile. Nice, so far :)

Death Note? Been mentioned a few dozen times already.

Gosick. It's a brilliant anime about a girl with ludicrously high intelligence who lives pretty much secluded in a school's library but is occasionally called upon to solve crimes, and a somewhat-less-intelligent boy who gets transferred there and messes up the usual flow of things. I love it because of the way you see how the girl reaches her conclusions. There's no hidden scenes, no evidence mysteriously conjured. They're all things shown in the anime itself before that time, and most likely even put emphasis on, but you just didn't piece together before that. It gives you this 'why didn't I see that' feeling nearly every episode.

Beyblade, Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, Yugioh, and Gurren Lagann.

Yeah, I like action stuff.

I hate that stupid drama stuff, I want explosions.

I've only seen two people mention it, but, Nichijou is probably my favorite anime ever. It was the one that really sucked me into anime because it is absolutely hilarious, and the animation is just amazing. The one thing that really irks me about most other shows is that the characters in the background are usually a static image or maybe 2 or three frames. The attention to detail is astounding.

I mean, look at this!

Oh yes, please ellaborate.
1. There are two minor characters who appear later on.
-Before Guts leaves to go help Caska, he meets this guy named Silat who is a Kushan (basically their version of Arabs/Persians)
-Another is a nobleman of the Midland King's court

2. Griffith's escape is a little different, the Princess wants to go along with them but is recaptured. Instead of generic soldiers chasing the Hawks, there are first a trio of weird Assassins, and then some Beast like soldiers who are lead by a guy who knows Zodd. Guts beats them after a long battle, chronologically the first real monster that Guts fights and kills.

3. After Guts survives the Eclipse, the Skull Knight arrives to survey the scene and Zodd arrives and is surprised and happy to see Guts still alive.

You know, I'm surprised they haven't started making omnibuses. Like 10 volume deals. I was kinda banking on that being the case. I could deal with like 3 £20 omnibuses.
Yeah, if they don't start on it soon I'm gonna have to start a petition or something.

Slayers was my first anime too! And definitely one of my favorites, Lina is a badass... ahem, anyways I have to go then mandatory list thing now

Roy's Favorite Anime's List *Insert trumets and stuff*

First place and reciever of the golden tail award (This is fun allready XD) goes to Elfin Lied, it isn't the most... err... happy anime out there (The manga is worse by far) but it has an amazing story, the music is definitely top notch as well, and is just very cool to watch. Plus it has hot women that rip apart people with invisible hands that can phase through anything.... Don't look at me like that...

Second place and reciever of the silver ears award goes to Demonbane, yeah it is super cheesy and has weird jumps in the story, but come on, Cthulhu Mythos in anime immediately makes it awesome in my book. They definitley could've made it longer though.

Third Place and reciever of the bronze muzzle award goes to Bleach, I started watching bleach around the same time that my brother started watching Naruto, and ultimately I found Bleach more fun and engaging to watch. The music is fun to listen to (Asterisk anyone?) and fit the scene very well.

Fourth place and reciever of the iron whiskers award goes to Eureka 7, if mechs flying on giant surfboards doesn't sound cool to you I feel bad for you.

Honorable Mentions

Slayers: Very first anime I ever watched, this series is what got me into anime and it is really good, seriously, go watch it.

Tenchi Muyuo (Specifically Tenchi Universe): This is a classic, and it's a good one. Kudos for making awesome characters. Though the OVA seems a bit rushed at the end.

Soul Eater: This is one series I wish kept on going. I liked the world, it was silly but not too cheesy, and is a damn good time in general.

Angel Beats: The one anime that made me cry... it was a very manly cry though (lies XD)

So for timekeeping sake that's what I'm going to stop here, there is a lot of great anime out there though.

Some anime series that I love are Panty and Stocking, FMA: Brotherhood, Cowboy Bebop, Big O, Durarara, Another Crawling Chaos, FLCL, Spice and Wolf, Okami-san, and Hellsing Ultimate. I still have anime I need to watch so I am sure that list will grow.

It depends which iteration you're talking about.

The two movies, especially the first one, have classic status. Somewhere up there with Akira.

But SAC was a horrible, horrible let down.

I'd say most people probably don't mention the films in these discussions because it would be like mentioning Akira. Anyone who knows anything about anime already knows about them, they kinda come with the territory.
I'm talking about the overall package of material that's available. I can understand not bringing up the 1995 movie for the same reason as not mentioning Akira. I would even say that Ghost in the Shell is far better than Akira. (Blasphemous I know.)

I'm quite fond of the Stand Alone Complex series myself but then to each their own.
