I've been moving away from TV shows for this reason. Too many still shots, panning shots, mouth flaps, cheap backgrounds and CG models, generic but cheap to animate noseless and lipless character designs, and generally poor animations.

My picks are Akira and Spirited Away. Akira is still the only anime that has full lip sync, I believe. The characters are so expressive and there's so much movement throughout. It's stunning for an anime. Compare it to a movie from today, like Summer Wars, and the new generation starts to look pretty trashy.
I actually think The Wind Rises looks even better than Spirited Away. Although basically all Miyazaki films look stunning.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is one of the most beautifully animated shows I've ever seen. See it in hi-def if you can.

Well, I've only watched The Wind Rises once so far and have watched Spirited Away five times over the years. But The Wind Rises is a good example of how even within Studio Ghibli, the new generation lacks the talent of the old. The Wind Rises being made by the old generation and their last movie, When Marnie Was There, being made by the new, the latter looking significantly worse and relying more on computers.
My experience of When Marnie was There was kind of blurry because of the tears.

Most of the ones I could name would fall under Ecchi, so you wouldn't be interested.

.....But what if I AM interested ;)

Then come with me and you'll be
In a world of pure titillation
Take a look and you'll see
Into total titillation

Take my hand and enter a world of a pure titillation
A realm of pure perversion
Take one look and you'll be
In a world of true seduction

On a slightly less perverted note;

Surprised no one mentioned Sword of the Stranger yet! Its pretty much the anime samurai version of The Raid, as in its all about dem damn amazing looking action scenes.

I also watched Kizumonogatari yesterday and was taken aback by how utterly splendid the animation is in it, they just made it so lifelike and its got such a nice flow to it. Here's the opening scene for y'all to indulge in:

Intermission. Fantasia is mostly gorgeous so far.

Didn't I literally just get done explaining this? One wonky frame taken out of context from the rest of the scene is completely meaningless until you see it in motion.

None of Mamoru Hosoda's movies do, and they're all beautifully animated. Probably because they didn't have to spend money shading the shapes and could spent more on actually making them move.
It's not even taken out of context. It's one of the first screenshots I see on Google. Is this better?
I do not care about screenshots. Show me the scene where it's from and I'll tell you.

The characters and background appear to exist separately. This look seems typical of the movie. I preferred paper animations and backgrounds over this blurry, easier to draw computer look. Character shades are pretty important for the typical anime style. Even anime TV shows have them, so it can't be that much more expensive. There's more to animated features than just movement. The movie looks cheap and flat.
You don't watch much animation, do you? The moving stuff always looks less detailed than the non moving stuff. Know why? You only have to draw the non moving stuff once, but you have to draw the moving stuff 12 to 24 times every second.

You get the same kind of thing in Akira too. Complex colors and realistic shading on the background, flat colors and cell shading on the characters and moving bits, because the latter takes far less work, and therefore far less money, to do.
The image links to that trailer you just showed me. It's from the trailer.

Why would you assume I haven't seen a lot of animations? Here, nearly every anime I've watched: https://myanimelist.net/animelist/Ezekiel

And here are most of the western animations I've seen, minus most of the ones from my childhood: http://www.imdb.com/user/ur24557039/ratings

Everybody knows that about animation. Stop patronizing me. Akira and Spirited Away blend backgrounds and characters more convincingly. Both layers have shadows and tones.

Hosoda's backgrounds are a mess and his characters lack detail, from what I see. I kind of wanted to watch Summer Wars after seeing The Girl Who Leapt Through Time years ago, but that movie didn't hold up with repeated viewings, and when I watched the trailer for Summer Wars after seeing Akira again I was shocked by how poor it looked.
"Intermission, Fantasia is mostly gorgeous so far"

Did you watch the Rite of Spring segment (the one with the Dinosaurs)

It is my absolute favorite segment that its a shame it did not use the full orchestral score (and this version is the best conducted one I have ever heard)
