Heyooooo all you fellow Escapists. I, The Great and Narcissistic Powerful Madara would like to discuss with you all the topic of Anime.

Anime, aside from Video Games and Building Gundam Models, has honestly been one of the most entertaining mediums I've experienced in my life. To some it may seem like nothing more than cartoons, but there have also been animes that go one step beyond the purpose of just simply entertaining. Some have gone so far as to take on a philosophical stand point and develop a story centered around that one issue.

Some have made their goal to engage and immerse the viewer into its wild and other-worldly lore and characters while carefully weaving the story within its own limits, creating a suspension of disbelief of what is possible and what isn't.

And finally some have been made just to go completely over the top in everything it does, giving it more freedom to do what most movies or live action shows are completely incapable of.

These are just a few of the ways that if executed properly, an anime can completely captivate you and blow your mind at how good it is. For me there were 3 animes as of recent that have always left me on the edge with each and every episode.

[HEADING=2]JoJo's Bizarre Adventure[/HEADING]

What can I say? This anime is so over the top in its manliness and at how utterly fabulous it is with its presentation. The poses, the characters, the colors, the music composition and the story, when meshed together, are all a sight to behold for any true anime fan. Not to mention that all 8 parts of the Manga are being animated by David Productions. I can't express just how much I love this series now that it is getting the anime treatment it so deserves. Breathtaking to say the least.

[HEADING=2]Fate/Zero[/HEADING]

This anime was by far one of the best animes I've ever seen. A prequel to the absolute mediocre anime, Fate Stay/Night (I don't recommend seeing it) that took place 10 years before Stay/Night. The anime is about Mages summoning famous heroes and figures throughout history to wage a war on one another for the Holy Grail that will grant their wishes. However this anime has so many twists and turns along with so many mature themes that can't be presented in a simple Protagonist vs Antagonist format. There is no right or wrong side in this Holy Grail War. It is the simple clash of ideals from different time periods and exactly how far people are willing to go to pursue their dreams and what they're willing to throw away. The Anime is top notch and one of the best stories ever told as historic figures like King Arthur, Diramuid, Alexander the Great and Gilgamesh wage war on one another in hopes for their own ideals and visions of the world.

[HEADING=2] Attack On Titan [/HEADING]

The series is about humanity living inside gigantic walls so as to keep itself safe from Titans. The Titans are gigantic humans who have no sexual organs nor do they eat anything else except humans. So their entire existence is a freaking mystery and all within the first 5 episodes do we get to experience true badassery and loads of death. But what made this anime a true experience is it brings to light the idea of what is mankind to do when we are no longer at the top of the food chain and are faced with the most hopeless of odds as we try and pursue a sense of freedom while living like livestock?
What really blew me away about this anime is how absolutely beautiful the animation quality is and the music that is incorporated in both the opening and episodes. That and the fact at how absolutely fucking dark it is. In the first episode we see people get eaten by the titans in such a gruesome fashion. On top of that, the way it looks, it seems that we may not have a happy ending and I'm just fine with that.
It's still a running anime that airs once a week and to say that I'm anxiously waiting for the next episode would be a serious understatement.

So that leaves the question, my fellow escapists:

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. One of the greatest anime of all time, one of my personal favorites. If you have never seen this anime before, you are now required to watch it. Obey the hypnotoad!

Some people will yell at me for this one, but...Naruto. I'm not including Naruto:Shippuden, I mean JUST Naruto. It starts off kind of slow and silly, but I think it stands up well on its own. I suppose it doesn't stand out as a superstar anime, but it has a special place in my heart.
[small][small]A heart which has been scorched by black fire from a stupidly complex and overpowered red eye pattern,[/small][/small] but I still like it.

One Piece. I just want to say that the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arc(s(depending on whether or not you consider the same arc)) are a frigging beautiful story. They're my favorite :). *Sniffle* Merry...

These days I read manga more often than I watch anime, so if I may include on of those: Jisatsutou. I'll be blunt, it starts off rather...emo...but when you consider that the english version of that name is "Suicide Island", it isn't that surprising.

The series is definitely good, but I highly recommend the movie above all else.
Heck the second movie was one hell of a trip itself.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica comes to mind. Its been two years since I've seen it and I still love it. I honestly ran out of anything else to say about it at this point, really, so I'll just leave it at that.

Funnily enough, my friend talked me into watching the series today. So I'm going in with some high hopes.

For me that would have to be death note. I watched it for the first time last year after refusing to watch it because it sounded like a stupid concept to me. Boy was I wrong. The entire series was like a mental battle of chess and I said "oh snap" out loud multiple times whenever one of them made a smart move or screwed up somehow. I was not very productive over the few days that it took me to watch the entire thing.

Ditto. I fucking love that show.

I've read that manga for both of those shows and can support their awesomeness. That said, I still recommend the manga for elfen lied over the anime because it has the full story and has more character development.

Hmm I haven't seen any of the anime in OP :( I really have some catching-up to do.

So I'm going to go out on a limb and put my vote towards an anime that is typically featured in everyone and their mother's top 10 lists...sorry if I come off as bland/unadventurous :S

[HEADING=3]Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood[/HEADING]

Awww, who wouda thunk it? An emotionally-moving story about two brothers who are on a quest to get their bodies back after an alchemy attempt horribly gone wrong (or should I say, right :p). Filled with a slew of interesting and deep characters, beautiful storyline and stunning art/animation, it's a must-see. If you haven't seen this then you aren't an anime fan.

[HEADING=3]Code Geass - Lelouch of the Rebellion[/HEADING]

This one's a personal favorite of mine, mostly because the sheer suspense and plot-twists are enough to make your brain either say "fuck this" or, if you're me, keep you glued to the edge of your seat and literally WAIL your eyes out at the sad moments. This anime features mecha (wooo unique) and goes for a rather complicated chess-style storyline with plot-twists up the ass, but it has one of THE BEST endings I can possibly think of for any anime. Seriously, it's so dramatic and meaningful if you've allowed yourself to be taken in.

The art direction is faithfully CLAMP, the same group of women behind Cardcaptor Sakura and Chobits. Some people don't like it very much, but for me it sure as hell got the job done and the fight scenes very good, what more could you want? It's more an emotional/suspense drama with a healthy sprinkling of mecha action, the best of it's kind.

[HEADING=3]Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann[/HEADING]

Robots which can scale to absurd sizes, the manliest of men, coolness factor x 9000, blatant disregard of physics on an astronomical scale that would make Einstein rip his hair out and Hawking get off his wheelchair at run away at the speed of light. Oh and sexy girl in revealing outfits.
As much as that description comes off as juvenile, it's not, it's just...err...thinking of description...can't...too awesome. Throw all your logic away and JUST WATCH IT because you will not experience anything like it. No seriously, logic simply does not apply to this anime - only the rule of universal awesomeness.

That's all for now.

I have 2 I suppose the first would be easily FLCL it is a interesting story about a intergalactic pirates and robots coming out of peoples heads while it has a undertone story about coming to maturity.

My second would be a manga and this is the best story I have ever read it is called Berserk it is a fantasy horror series about the struggles of life and fighting against fate.

Samurai Champloo must be the best anime I've ever seen.
Cowboy Bebop is probably a close second.

Oh, we're allowed to include manga? Then another notch for Berserk, indeed one of the greatest stories ever. Only rarely do you come across a piece of fiction that impacts your life. Berserk is one of them.

As for anime...

And recently Little Witch Academia really took me by surprise. I really didn't expect this amount of quality from current anime anymore.

I like several anime, from the shounens like Naruto and Dragonball (NOT Bleach though), to the more elaborate and thought-provoking ones like Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist (both). In case you couldn't tell, almost every anime I like I first saw on [adult swim] or Toonami. However, while I do like those animes and more, I wouldn't describe them as having "blown me away." No, I must say that the only anime to have ever done that was one by the ever beloved Shinichiro Watanabe.

Ehhhh, no, not those guys. I like Cowboy Bebop, but even THAT didn't really blow my mind.

Yes, them. THIS show is IMO the greatest anime ever made, and it's my absolute favorite. It's got everything! Action, comedy, memorable characters, drama, an amazing soundtrack, and style! Sure, Bebop has that too, but what made this show blow my mind and prefer it over Bebop was the fact that I didn't expect to like it when I first saw it. I was never into hip-hop, and though I liked samurai, the mish-mash put me off this show at first. But it just works... sooooo well! I love it! I continue to watch reruns to this day! I also preferred its ending to Bebop's, but again, Bebop's wasn't bad.

So yea.

I second Code Geass and would like to point at Sword Art Online

This anime is one of the best I've seen in a long time. It follows a similar plot device to HACK// or Yureka in the idea of a VR MMORPG that suddenly becomes rogue and imprisons all the players but it kind of goes beyond the idea of an MMO. SAO really is about how the human spirit copes with adversity and sometimes you feel like you're watching a war movie or something.
It's really good trust me.

Time for a little history lesson. Fate/Zero is not a prequel to the Fate/Stay Night anime, but for the original visual novel. The original F/SN is an almost 100 hours long, well-written epic story in three distinct arcs. The Fate route which focuses on Saber and sets up the Grail War and its rules, the Unlimited Blade Works route which focuses on Rin and Archer and is deconstructing the protagonist's ideals, and the Heaven's Feel route, which focuses on Sakura and the machinations and intents behind the forming of the Grail War and its final conclusion. That is three completely different stories branching from the same start, with completely different events, confrontations and endings and each about thirty to forty hours long... and they tried to cram all of it into one 24 episode anime series. Do you see the problem yet?
The only reason Fate/Zero does any better is because it is based on the prequel novels written by the same author, so it could be adapted straight and true to the original without having to mix the elements of different routes (which more often than not leads to horrible results).

That said, the one thing I can agree with you about is that one should not go out their way to see the F/SN anime. They should read the visual novel (it has been translated for years). :p

Let see-
Spirited Away- Now this is an anime that I did truly feel blown away/ awe struck. The scenery/ visual, the score and and the artstyle are the reasons for this.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC series- The high quality production to that show along with Yoko Kanno music and the characters also made me blown away by it aswell.

Gurren Lagaan- It's the only anime that truly did rev/ pumped me up and cheer for the characters and it had so many epic moments!!

Tiger and Bunny- Sure the animation were great and all but thanks to the characters, the setting and aswell the script/ story/ plot aspect of it. I never knew they can pulled off the Western aspect of superheroes so well!

PS (By the way OP, what is your Gundam collection as I'm into Gundam models too).

The first time seeing Cowboy Bebop.
Before I go any farther it is probably worth mentioning I don't watch much anime.

I think the first time I was really floored by an anime was this show. Believe it was the Mad Perot episode.
I'm not going to abuse hyperbole in a vain attempt to say exactly how much it impacted me, but I'll just say it was very effective.

That "War On Titan" looks kind of interesting though. : o
