"If you go on with your evil plans regarding internet censorship, and fail to meet our demands, be prepared to have your website offline for an hour!!!!!"

Good job. I bet Kevin Rudd is going to be mildly confused, if he ever hears about it.

I support what Anonymous are doing in this case, but it's kinda counterproductive. "Hands off our legal (and illegal) porn" just makes them sound like a paedophile ring. Which is exactly how they can be painted by the conservative media now. And of course, anyone investigating them finds out what their roots are, and can you imagine the average hardcore christian reaction to 4chan? I'm liberal, anti-censorship, atheist and well educated, and I still find it pretty foul.
It would be a nice if there was an organised protest group which had some respectability and still made headlines, but I guess I might as well wish for a jetpack while I'm at it.

Well a friend of mine told me how he helped them do it.
*MY friend may or may not have been me*

Well, while I get a few laughs out of this way of protest I think it is the wrong signal.

I mean doesn't it proofs the fascist government right? Aren't we gamers hackers with criminal intents? They will that use totally for propaganda and it is hard to justify this act against non-gamers. Non-gamers will see it as it is a crime probably done because of the wish to play violent video games. Do not worry they will spin it that way.

Hence I think this action did more harm than any good.
Ditto to this. The dude is basically saying that these sites should be blocked because they encourage bad behaviour, disseminate questionable material, and act as launch pads for harassment. So in response they pile goatsies into his inbox?

I'll bet he's rubbing his hands in glee and working out how to spin this into his campaign.

This was almost nothing to do with gamers. A bunch of trolls protesting the idea of a ridiculous amount of censorship. But I've always enjoyed the 4chan raids. Like the Habbo ones. They're always such fun. And how was this hacking? If you're just saying that the gov. will try to spin it this way, fair enough. But even then I doubt it. Probably just some crap about how "this is why we must censor freedom!"

I agree with you and I am totally aware that this is only slightly related to video games.
That was an example to show how this incident will be used by the conservatives to justify their course of action to the general public. And they will. And it is nearly impossible to justify these hackings.

The attack is conterproductive. A government representative won't back down to threats. it shows weakness. The flitering proposal is bullshit aswell. I can't remember where i heard it, but "If you could be told what to see or read, then it follows that you could be told what to say or think."

Mostly, I think the last paragraph of this article is the most interesting:

"The news highlights the findings of a new report from network protection firm Prolexic claiming that botnet evolution has reached its next tipping point, as political and activist interests become the principal driving force behind denial-of-service, espionage and other attacks."

So basically, in the future, instead of a million people marching on Washington to protest something, we'll just have ten million people running bots on their computers to spam the White House with pornography. AWESOME!

Kind of makes me wish somebody would do a DDoS attack on me... Or maybe I'll just go on 4chan for a few hours instead.

Anyway, I think this action sends a, if you will, poetically appropriate message to the Australian government. "If you want to restrict our Internet, then we'll restrict yours." Still, you have to wonder if this is going to do anything other than this:

What im most concerned about is the fact the "black list" will not be open to public review or question.
I'm being paranoid about this but how is that a good thing, its only a few steps away from china's idea.
Also implimenting this will make our already dismal national average internet speed EVEN LOWER.
It's a stupid idea, and one thats not quite technically viable..... but since when does "it won't work" ever stop politics.

more on topic: the attack, while very amusing will not have helped the cause at all.

I would be very afraid if I were Rudd. The boys and... well boys in white masks have done some scary stuff (they got their creator named as time magazine's "person of the year"). They could crash the site for weeks if they wanted.
Exactly. If people worldwide get a hold of this, the sites could go down for a long time.

Although it may seem counterproductive, it also sends a message that we are still the people who run this country, not the politicians. To quote that odd movie V For Vendetta; "People should not be afraid of their governments, rather governments should be afraid of their people.".

Looking forward to seeing how this unfolds.

I have to say, i can see this getting totally ignored by everyone except us interested internet types. For example, i can't see this making the 6:00 news.

Also the idea of "People should not be afraid of their governments, rather governments should be afraid of their people." is brilliant in theory but just wont work on this level, such an ideal only applys at election time lol, and liberal or labor this election either is gonna be bad.

Anonymous' is going completely the wrong way about this. No one is going to take you seriously if you bombard the PM with porn, they've done more than good by this. Although I am on their side, they are being completely retarded in the way they've gone about the situation.

I'm getting sick of all this censorship crap. If parents want censorship there is software that does that. Dont screw my already not too flash Australian internet speed cos you want to impress some people for the next election. And that IS what this is about. Nothing in politics is about the nation it is about winning votes to keep power. Honestly there has to be a more feasible form of governance than democracy. DDOS attacks will prove nothing, change nothing and probably detrimental but spamming government with porn gives me a smile, so I'm not too fussed about it. Atkinson is essentially trying to force his opinions on others rather than doing his job, so I hope he crashes and burns. Like the cops finding he was hoarding child porn on his computer so he could be the only person in Australia with it or something similar.

Good on Anonymous. Australian censorship of media is really getting way too far, not just with games, but with other media like film too (18+ rated films no longer allowed to be displayed in store shelves, for example.
Think that was only in South Australia...and i thought they changed it nearly as soon as it happened

Odds are like 80% of the people doing the attacks aren't from Australia

Micheal Aktinson Update: I was watching the Australian game review show Good Game and they had an interview with Micheal Aktinson, in which he explained that at 2 in the morning someone (A gamer) had slipped a warning note under his door then he went on to say 'I now feel my family is more threatened by gamers than the illegal bikie gangs' (WTF!?!?!?!). He also commented on Gamers 4 Croydon (Vote for them) an dsaid they were gamers who would engage in criminal activity'. This is just mad.
