One wouldn't have thought anonymous (or anyone, else for that matter) needed a reason to shut fox news down beyond their being a cesspool of unapologetic mendacity.
Of course, that's not what they're saying.Sarge034 said:How do you know what Fox is saying about the protestors is not true? Some of them could be "...filthy, disgusting and dirty...". In fact, I would bet my life that some are "...filthy, disgusting and dirty...".
So they were being slanderous trolls?MrDumpkins said:They started this campaign because fox news was using slanderous names to portray the protestors, that's wrongTharwen said:Anonymous: We don't like what you're saying so we're just going to hack your site like little girls having a slapfight.

Just saying. Its kinda a symbolism thing.
Now if Anonymous found a way to intercept the fox news signal to implant an anonymous message... Then I would see this as more than symbolism.![]()
As much as I agree that they are a terribly biased news source. (Heck, they all are. CNN and MSNBC are no better, fox just gets more attention with their nonsense) This point is 100% correct. If you are going to "champion" free speech, you can't cherry pick who's right you defend.Korolev said:I hate Fox News, but they are a private company with a right to exist. Anonymous says they defend free speech, but it looks like they have no real conception of what free speech is. How can they pretend to be champions of freedom, if they want to shut down anyone who insults a group they like or opposes their views? That's not freedom.
Yeah, Fox News is a biased, horrible news station that has been pumping political (but not real) poison into the US for a good while now. They still have a right to exist. For all their supposed libertarianism, Anonymous have no real idea what they are doing, or what Freedom of Speech actually means.
Freedom of Speech means FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Not "Freedom of speech you like and not freedom of speech you don't like". Fox News, vile as they are, have a right to not like the Protests.
Not really sure what you mean here, so they take down their website with a DDoS attack. 3 hours later and it's back up, the world keeps spinning. Heck it's not like the Escapist was even kept down when it was DDoS'd. They can make their statements all they want, they lose all credibility of threat when they have proven time and time again to be nothing but ineffective.Ldude893 said:Everyone get some popcorn and sit back.
If Anonymous proceeds with their plan and if FOX News is going to behave the same way they behaved in the past, this is going to be quite a show regardless of which side wins.

They're just a bunch of bored hackers. No matter the intentions, illegal is illegal. I'm sure if Dr. King could get people to do things the legal way, they can too.
God I hate Anon.
Yeah, we all know that Fox is a bunch of rabid liers, but it's not within anyone's right to shut them up. The whole 'Freedom of Speech' idea encourages tolerance toward everyone's ideas, whether they're "pants-on-head-retarded" or not. And its not really that Anonymous is bad (i'm sure they have decent members *hope*) But their actions really makes me scratch my head in confusion...are they defenders of free speech, or are they enforcers of their own ideals over other's rights?[user said:Aprilgold[/user]]And then we forget about all the crap Fox feeds to the general population, they do more slander and bending of the truth then anyone else. We also forget the good Anonymous does outside of this hacking, google it, you might find out some interesting stuff.
Not really, there is a cultural limit to freespeech, you cant advocate violence against other individuals and its seen as bad taste when your continually spewing blatantly false information and saying its fact or being just generally insulting, really I'm hoping this just at least lets fox know that its being watched... but the worry here is that it could make fox look sympathetic, in fact Im sure they will play that angle, "the heroic underdog was brutally attacked by a group of hacker kids who hate freedom".MajorDolphin said:This. I can't stand FOXnews but they have the right to spew whatever venomous nonsense they choose.Worgen said:I cant wait to see how this goes down, fox has deserved to be hit for awhile, altho freedom of speech means freedom for speech you hate also.
These "occupiers" deserve every bit of grief they get. There is nothing noble about what they are doing, at all. The majority of videos on them have shown the majority dont have a clue why they are doing this and they come across as a bunch of college kids that dont want to pay their student loans... in other words they are looking for a handout. Someone took a dump on a police car, rampant drug use, sex... hell, they think its a big party, or something. They want to complain about jobs, they need to get their tails out of this misguided "protest", and I use that word very loosely, and get back in the hunt for a frigging job. I see them holding up signs promoting socialism, commentators promoting violence, people wanting to get rid of capitalism... its disgusting. Hell, this thing was started by a group in canada, and its getting financed by George Soros, who wants nothing more than to see the downfall of America.Greg Tito said:Anonymous Threatens Fox News Over Occupy Wall Street
The hacker collective wants to stop Fox from belittling the protesters of Occupy Wall Street.
Anonymous has thrown its weight behind virtually every cause the last few years. They have attacked Scientology for its so-called evil practices, they brought down Gene Simmons [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107699-Anonymous-Target-Planned-to-Take-Down-WikiLeaks] when he openly taunted them. Now, the group has released a video with a mechanized voice of a woman stating that they are in support of the ongoing protests in New York City and around the world. Anonymous believes that the pundits on Fox News have too often used libelous descriptions of the protesters to invalidate the protests, and the only recourse is to shut down the network's website. The attack is called "Operation: Fox Hunt."
"Fox is now the target of Anonymous because of their continued propaganda against the Occupations," the woman's voice says. "They use words such as filthy, disgusting and dirty to describe the protesters. Since they will not stop belittling the occupiers, we will simply shut them down."
The date chosen for this attack? November 5th, also known as Guy Fawkes Day. Fawkes tried to blow up the Parliament building in 1605 to place a Catholic monarch on the Throne of England, and his likeness was popularized by the film adaptation of Frank Miller's V for Vendetta. Anonymous adopted use of the Guy Fawkes mask to hide the identities of members when gathering in public - even though the proceeds from mask sales makes it way back to Hollywood [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112817-Anonymous-Unwittingly-Funds-Time-Warner], but that's besides the point - and Fawkes has become a kind of de facto symbol for the group.
"Anonymous will not only shut down Fox News," said Anonymous. "We will also engage in a propaganda campaign of our own, to show them how it feels to be chastised."
The hackers of Anonymous have succeeded in taking down websites periodically before, so it is possible that the Operation Fox Hunt may work ... at least until someone switches on a new server to deal with DDos attack.
