Let's just say that it isn't exactly a Twenty-Eight Days Later or Oryx and Crake-scenario now, but what people are afraid of is that it might mutate and become a virus we do not have vaccines for AND that's very lethal. Currently we don't have vaccines for it, but it isn't that letha.

Ok, this is just getting stupid, another "pandemic" like the swine flu crap which is once again gonna send people into a panic all only to find out that it can be cured by soup and 7-up. Your thoughts?
Ok.
1. That's Swine Flu.
2. Pandemic means how widespread it is, not how deadly or anything.
3. Swine Flu's not crap, it's killed people.
Twas what I was about to say, my friends gran died of swine flu.
Technically, most common colds are pandemics.

If you are worried about being killed by swine think about this.

You`re more likely to be killed by a shower curtain

Rest assured I'll punish the guy in my labs who's responsible for this.

It's times like this I'm glad I'm an introvert who generally avoids human contact. When the zombie flu breaks out I'm just gonna grab a cricket bat and hang with the mates at the pub.

Er...wait...I'm American. Make that "baseball bat", "friends", and "bar".

But it's a flu, so it's caused by a virus....which are already resistant to antibacterials. Plus Viruses mutate all the time, hence why we haven't found a cure for the common cold.

It's hardly more deadly than any other flu virus.

While old and very young people count as "perfectly healthy" in certain statistics, they are still prone to die of just about any flu. While one shouldn't yell at the scientists developing a cure (they do a good job), one could certainly facepalm at the knuckleheads who panic every time some guy on the opposite side of the globe dies from something slightly different.

Try AIDS. That's worth worrying about.
This. I lol'd. Nobody freaks out about SARS anymore, really, but I doubt it's lost any potency it had when we were first introduced to it. It's so strange... does anyone else think of 1984 when this stuff happens?

It is something that should be tackled, I acknowledge that, but the truth is, it's just a variant of flu. Whilst people have died from it, decent bed rest, decent medicine and a good health service (If necessary) will sort it out most of the time.

As true as that may be, it has no relevance to the topic. The flu is caused by a virus, which is quite a bit different from bacteria.

Uh no it isn't a Bacteria it's a Virus and as such their are still very few anti virals that actually do the job. The Virus hasn't become resistant to anti virals as a result of over use as in the case of Bacterial infections such as MRSA, it has mutated as a result of their being literally hundreds of flu and cold variations spread across several species.

The issue here is the dual nature of how this is being handled.

The virus itself in most cases seems to be significantly less deadly than ordinary seasonal flu. Each year the flu vaccine comes along, we get injected, hundreds of thousands catch the flu thousands die as a result of it and nothing in general ever gets mentioned about it. Swine Flu on the other hand, it is daily updates of the numbers infected and the numbers that have died (14 I think to date in Scotland.) Yet on the other hand nothing is being done to contain the spread. They either need to clamp down and prevent the spread, which is to late now as it has spread to far, or they need to just shut the frick up about it and get on with getting the people that need to be vaccinated vaccinated.

Wait...you mean viruses are going to be around FOREVER?!!? I think we should throw the population into a panic every single time one makes the rounds. Thanks, pharacuetical companies, for turning fear into profit!
If your so confident be sure you don't get the immunisation. I for one will be at the front of the cue. Good luck to ya.
But how many people has Swine Flu killed worldwide? Maybe thirty? And they were all people who had underlying medical conditions that already weakened their immune systems. I work in a hospital, never get a flu or pneumonia shot and haven't had more than a head cold in years. Of course it's possible that a new strain will come along a la Stephen King's "The Stand" and wipe us all out but 90% of this is hype to make money for big pharma and the media. Besides, if a virus comes along that is strong enough to make normal, healthy people gravely ill the chances of coming up with an effective vaccine in time is pretty nil.
Swine flu has killed about 450 confirmed cases world wide http://vietnewsonline.vn/News/International/6701/New-flu-unstoppable-WHO-says-calls-for-vaccine.htm and it has just started killing the 'low risk' groups, there are already more than 30 deaths in Britain and there are 3 deaths of previously healthy people including a GP, so the problem is that it has started killing healthy people. Hopefully it won't get much better at it, but who knows...

I know this strain won't wipe us all out, but I'm more concerned about being one of the few healthy people it does kill.
I do see your point, and I support your right to have access to a vaccine if it's available. Maybe it's the health care background talking but if we reacted to each "new" disease when the media hypes it, hospitals would be so overwhelmed they couldn't take care of the truly ill. Hell, it happens all the time now. You should see how many people with runny noses rush into the ER when they see that the flu/E.coli/meningitis/whatever has killed two elderly women in Guam. Anyway, It's just my opinion. Yours is just as valid, of course. And thus, a discussion!
I thoroughly agree with your point of view as well, I have no idea how frustrating it must be working in a hospital and getting all of that crap! I also agree a lot of things are blown out of proportion by patients and media alike. Theres a brilliant episode of Scrubs that covers an E.Coli breakout that is exactly as you described. I just think this one may be as bad as they think. I also wish people knew what Pandemic meant, that must wind you up!

its not really new, the swine flu virus is just expected to make a come-back in the fall flu season, as far as pandemics go this one doesn't have that high of a fatality rate (120,780 infections to 699 deaths) which is a 1 in 125 or so chance of death. Compared to the potential of Ebola if it where infectious, where 90 in 100 die from it when they contract it.

Why can't we all just live in totalitarian government-controlled newspaper states? We'd stop getting panic-inducing news for a start! We would be told how, for once, absolutely everything is going right! This is perfect!
