No, in fact I'm often refurred to as "dude" & "sir" & rarely correct anyone for doing so. I'm not effeminate, so no one ever assumes I'm a girl, unless I'm using an avatar that's an effeminate-looking-as-possible male, because no guy would ever make one of those.

I've never been offended online, but 90% of the time (if not more) when I play a game online I don't tell anyone my gender, nationality, sexuality, political orientation or what my favourite color is either. Since I don't have a mic, so no one can pick up on my gender when they hear my voice and I honestly don't see what me being girl has to do with me playing Modern Warfare, Company of Heroes or Left 4 Dead.

As far as I am concerned, I connect to play a game. I expect everyone else I play with to do the same. Last time I checked, the internet was a great place to be anonymous and it isn't required that I know anything about your or vice versa for us to play together.

I might be falling into the old rape-myth of "It is the victims fault", but I've always wondered just how girls that play games get singled out in the first place. With the advent of voip in games, I can see how it occasionally would be a problem, but this phenomena has been around longer than that. If you go out of your way to tell people what gender you are, aren't you actually highlighting the fact that you are different even if said difference has no impact on anything related to the game?

People usually don't know I'm a girl when I'm playing, because I won't really address that unless I'm asked directly, so everyone assumes I'm a guy. And then, when they know it, you usually get a "do you have a photo?" or somthing along those lines in the first five minutes. I'm killing things here, and I couldn't care less what you look like, if I would want to get hit on I would be going to a club or something instead, leave me the hell alone.

Now, when there's voice chat involved... works like a clock, the moment you open your mouth it's a freaking uproar. I rather remain silent, being actually treated equally it's really nice.

Thanks for posting this QuestioN!

Its kind of weird that the Majority (and I mean majority) of guys who play games feel like its their own private secret thing they do that they can only do with guys. Its like they've made it up in their heads. Just like its weird for them that girls would be Programmers or IT or *Gasp, like comics.

What kind of stone age do they live in? Didn't we get past all of this a few decades ago?

I'm sincerely sorry if this might offend you or piss you off, and I know that this is against the whole 'equality in gaming between genders' subject we have going on here, but it's still a mind-blowing concept to have a person who openly admits to being a porn-star on here. Just...*head exploding*...although if you are the one from I Hit With my Axe that I'm thinking of, you did give me one of my favourite quotes I've heard on this site.

My friend does always say "It's weird that there are girl playing this" whenever one of the regular females are on the TF2 server I frequent. I then have to remind him YET AGAIN that some of the best gamers in the world are female
Really? :D Yea, I'm that Satine.

I guess the world never really truly changes and Men and Women will always look at each other like alien species. I'm not offended at all. Mostly entertained. On your side of the screen it may be mind blowing. On my side of the screen its a fun experience I had when I was younger. Being out of it for 6 months feels like a lifetime ago.

Oh well. ... oh, what was your favorite quote?

Oh and my favorite post so far on this forum has been the guy who openly plays girl characters to get the perks. Priceless. :)
It was something along the lines of

"Weren't you in a butt movie?"
"I don't do anal"
"No, because you have a big butt"
"...I do have a big but..."

I've never gone out of my way to announce that I'm a girl and you'd never be able to tell from my username alone. If someone asks or if I do use my mic then I am perfectly happy to answer or deal with whatever comes my way. I've heard it all before and I'm never usually offended. I love the online community because it's pretty awesome to find people with similar interests and I've never not felt welcome or been harassed because of my gender. Sure you get a few assholes but lets face it that happens everywhere and isn't exclusive to being online or to gaming.

nope. but then, even female programmers are rare today. those that i know don't even do it for a living. i don't think it is so much having a guys-only thing, i think it's closer related to a nerd stigma, and that you wouldn't see female nerds (because they don't exist, obviously). i doubt female gamer numbers are high either, which allows stereotypes to rule.

you'll see by the time games will become more mainstream, gaming will become as genderless an activity as watching tv is now.
But that's saying only men watched tv before..
you're saying they didn't?

Not a girl, but every time I see a girl on Team Fortress 2 with a mic she's made fun of a lot. However, it's all in good nature and the girl usually isn't offended.
You say that but with every giggle or comment at her expense, she dies a little inside...

OT:
Firstly I'm not a girl but my other half is, she's also a gamer and tends to run rings around people on BFBC2, she's had to endure the odd comment until others see her play, at which point they generally stop.

In some cases i'm pretty sure she offends others more than she feels offended.

I don't treat them any different, except maybe try to start a decent conversation for once or a singalong depending on whether or not there's alcohol in my veins.

It usually seems to me that VoIP is the killer. Especially in MMOs. When I used to play WoW I kind of felt obligated to tear the guys clamouring to talk to/hang around with the girls in our guild as I was an officer. But with the younger crowds it's irritating, hard work.

I personally have to admit I'm surprised when I realise that someone I'm playing with/against is female, but that's down to the fact that my own internal presumptions are suddenly changed, nothing else. Then it's business as usual.

If that was true all girl gamers would be dead.

Maybe it's the game genre, my only real experience is with driving sims. There aren't that many female drivers around, but the ones that are tend to be bloody good, it only takes a couple of laps before flirting gives way to "Incredible lap luv, what's your wing setting?" :)
FInally someone said some thing in relation to non fps. Im a guy, but my female counterpart is big into fps's and could whoop my ass hands down. But I dont play such games.... not a fan of the competition or violence. Driving sims, specifically non competitive in nature, is where I stay. Rarely a girl there.

Also, I almost always play female characters. named Ahrianna to be precise. If no other reason, I dont want to stare at a guys ass an entire game? Not my main, but its one I often give to shut someone up.

I have also come across females, knowing they are girls they use that fact to be an attention whore. Im not saying that to be offensive, just a slang term. Granted Im an attention whore too, but not via xbl or psn... (PC gaming sucks... ahem) On the games Im just playing for fun. But those rare occasions when I get the female attention lover... I ask them politely to blow it out their ass.. which I do to guys as well. Dont need to listen to one person haver on and on. Guy, girl... what does it matter...

To be honest incidents where females are made fun of usually depends on the gamming community. Generally speaking with my personal noting is that female gamers are usually have a tendacy to be quite able. They are also usually better mannered compared to the average male gamer. (Although the average guy gamer can be quite bad, but then again that depends on the community)

PS. Female voices usually tend to be annoying on Xbox but thats due to the fact the mic tends to raise girls voices at this displeasing high pitch. No offense intended.

I just have to say that you have my favorite avatar of all time.

And on topic the times when I do talk I am mistaken for a 12 year old boy, and when they figure out that I am in fact a 20 year old woman they harras me until I change lobby's. That's why I'm usually in party chat or just don't speak up.
Thank you. I love my doggie.

I usually lecture people about having to treating women with respect even if this is the internet. Generally making me part of the problem.

Really? Who cares?

Abuse gets thrown around at whoever, it's just if the target is a girl it's more likely to be sexist and/or lewd. If it's to a guy like me it's gonna be homophobic/rude but more often than not be in relation to my skill at the game.

If I can deal with moronic comments from morons, and you can as well, I'm fairly sure girl gamers can too.

I find a lot of it funny, it's a very rare twat that can actually piss me off. A more worthwhile question would be; do girl gamers find being trolled as pathetic/funny as I/(we?) do?

Edit: I guess girl gamers get more needless grief than any guy would, so you'd have to deal with it constantly and that'd get on your nerves more making it harder to deal with.

I don't think I've ever been harassed in-game. There's certainly been some 'hur hur, you were killed by a girl' but that's about the extent of it.
