Heres a question though. Is it a bad movie about a video game? Or a bad "video game" movie? Cause I mean, I havent seen it but it seems like as far as adapting the source material goes, its faithful enough. I like that they didnt just do the plot of ACI or II, and made a new character entirely.

And I mean, the plot of the games has been garbage ever since they killed Desmond.
Being a faithful adaptation and being a good movie are not mutually inclusive. One can be faithful to the source material and still suck as a movie in itself. I mean, 300 is about as faithful an adaptation as you're going to get, and I despise that movie. If being faithful to the source material is all it takes to be a "good videogame movie", we might as well drop all possible standards right now.

I think too many people making video game movies are just idiots about it. They take a game and bastardize the hell out of it and then wonder what went wrong.

Even comic movies and other adaptations do it and act confused. I just want to encourage faithful adaptations. And again, it might be an issue with the source itself, since AC has fallen far in quality even as a game.

I'm not too sure, but apparently they're doing an Apple of Eden thing again. So I would say they have already copied the general plot of like five AC games.

I'd rather just have a good movie, accuracy be damned. I've heard too many times that "Oh, we treat source material with great respect, but also try to make the best movie we can!" only to see neither of those in the final result.
I don't ask for an outstanding accomplishment in cinematography. I would be content with something of a quality of average MCU flick, or a fun action romp like, for example, John Wick.
Being a fan of the medium or franchise doesn't always help, even if you are a good director, as Warcraft movie have proven.
I think writing is the crux, and so far video game movies weren't better in that regard than, well gonna be brutal, most of video games.

But i feel like i drifted away from your question at this point, so here's a review summary that might explain what's the Assassin's Creed problem, as a video game adaptation:

Assassin's Creed is good evidence that sometimes a video game is the better medium than a movie with which to tell a story.

I know just stopped playing after Brotherhood. The plot got so convoluted that I didn't want to even think about what happened next. Did they kill Desmond in Brotherhood? Because I don't remember.

The only good game to movie adaption done well officially are Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, Silent Hill, and Fatal Fury 1 & 2 (also animated). The best movie we have about video games is Wreck-It Ralph. When will Hollywood learn to put effort in to these adaptions?

I love how the Animus is the WORST THING about assassin's creed, guess what 90% of the trailers are?

The Animus.

You can tell that the Hollywood suits really understand us.

One day, we may have a good video game movie. Just not right now.
I, for one, like to know if a film is good before I see it.

Saw this coming as soon as I realized they were focusing on the future not-Desmond shit.

"We're making a movie with parkouring assassins during the Spanish Inquisition."

"Righto. Better make it mostly about a modern dude being strapped to a giant steadycam then!
"

How colossally dense are these people? It's been 10 years now, a full fucking decade, and Ubisoft still haven't learned that simple fucking lesson.
The only reason I can think of the Animus being justified is if they want to visit multiple time periods in a single movie/game. And even then, that's still stupid because I can think of a dozen easier ways to do it.

Just off the top of my head:

But really, AssCreed's plot probably needs a complete reboot at this point. I mean, it's basically an anthology series already; the Animus only really mattered when the plan was for the series to end. But now, it's just this millstone around the series neck.

I'm not saying it's good or bad. But I know too many of you will now stick to the opinion of it being shit, with no basis other than hearsay..

Can't actually see anyone on the first page of comments with an "I'll see for myself" attitude. Ridiculous.
I'll see for myself when it's released here in January. I don't usually read/watch reviews beforehand because movie trailers already spoil so much, I'll just trust my "insticts" and watch something I know nothing about if I feel I'm gonna like it.

In this case, though, I just skimmed some reviews since I'm familiar with the whole AC thing, and it's "sad" since I genuinely thought this would be a great movie. Who knows, maybe I'll like it even more since I'll be seeing it with a "so apparently this movie is bad..." mentality.

This movie was "iffy" to "no" when I saw the trailer. It didn't help that it was based on an overrated game whose gameplay made me stop playing it in the middle of the first level.

Even though I had never played the game, I thought Warcraft was a solid video game movie. I still think the original Mortal Kombat movie is the best video game movie ever.

I disagree that Warcraft was a solid movie, by movie standards of structure, narrative and plot. And this is from someone who used to play WoW but stopped after the Burning Crusade expansion.

I'm not surprised to hear this, I mean has a computer game translated to the big screen ever done well?
Just trying to think of one and none spring to mind, well resident evil maybe if you don't take it too seriously but it's not Oscar winning stuff.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Resident Evil (first movie)
Mortal Kombat

I don't think those three are "good," per se, but I'd certainly call them decent. Warcraft would come in the no. 4 place, but I won't deny it's heavily flawed.
