Persona 3/4, Wild Arms 3, Digital Devil Saga 1&2, and Either Tales game for it. For non-Rpgs Sly Cooper series Ico/SoTC(don't care that you said it need mention at least twice). Also the .Hack Series, the original 4 + the newer G.U series.

Try out SSX Tricky and SSX3, I had some serious fun with those two, even though I'm normally not into "trick" games.

Also, if you don't have a problem accepting Donald Duck as a mage and Goofy as a warrior, try out Kingdom Hearts. It's really charming and really fun :) Even if you're not too into Final Fantasy.

Viewtiful Joe was a GameCube game and should have remained so. It was a crime releasing it on the PS2 with that controller.

OT: How about the Metal Gear Solid series? PS2's backward compatible for PSX original game and Metal Gear 2 & 3 especially are incredible games if you like cinematic stealth and incomprehensible but ridiculously entertaining storylines

Ratchet and Clank
Jak and Daxter
Devil May Cry 1-3
Final Fantasies - if you're into them
Summoner series

You'd do well by going to a games shop and buying a bunch of games in the 4 for £20 section or whatever, you can pick up a load of good bargains on awesome games.

Shadow hearts (the FIRST one)

THE best jrpg ever created alongside FF7.
The main character is BAD-ASS, the fighting system is good old turn-based. Its challenging, amazing dark and gritty story. Great side-quests.

Except the controller isn't a problem. Nothing was a problem, it was actually a good port. Plus it had more things than the GC version (characters wise).
Oh and they have the collector's edition of MGS out that includes all of them (well minus number 4)

Ah well each to their own I suppose suppose I was always a tad bitter about the extra PS2 content haha. But I never could get to grips with the PS2 controls after the GC. It was mapped so perfectly and the GC controller was just sooooo good.
And didn't know about the collectors edition MGS. Does it include the 'extra games'. Like the 'subsistence' version of MGS3?

As far as I remember yes: http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-Collection-Playstation-2/dp/B001383L36
They also have the same for GTA and Burnout.
Get all those collections and you should be fine for quite a while.
