Another way to look at censorship

This has no doubt been said in every single response before mine, but I'll still say it, to emphasise the point.

Forbidding extreme gore just forces developers to take the gore away. It is hardly necessary. I mean, the Australian version of L4D2 is violence light, and the Killzone games have virtually no blood at all... I'm afraid gore has never been a focus of those boring shooters. And censorship is never the answer. To anything.

No. I like gore. Games are fun when I'm blowing off someone's head.

Sure, cutesy games, and more lighthearted games are also really fun sometimes, but there's nothing as satisfying as blowing an unfortunate raiders' into a fine gooey paste in Fallout 3, or watching as you chainsaw a victim in half in Gears.

This sounds like an opinion on games from someone who doesn't play them. I can think of any game, with the exception of manhunt perhaps, that relies on gore as it's selling point, or even as a key feature. You can tone down the violence on any violent game and it'd be the same game.

Also, even if that did force developers to do different games, it's going to be less creative because they can't show certain things they'd like to. Telling people what they can and can't represent does not lead to increased creativity. Do you see the incredible irony in your logic?

I mean really now...

Okay, point taken...
Maybe I used the wrong term.
For example Gears of War. It's an average game... only special because of extreme gore, which in my opinion, is total bullshit.

Edit: hey, you used my title suggestion... awesome! =)
No, in your opinion Gears if War is a very average game. The gore has nothing to do with it's popularity, I like the cover system and in general the game.

thats a terrible idea, dude... you can just ban gore so that developers will start making their games all family-friendly or however YOU want them to be.

Wow, you managed to rile up the jerk in a lot of people.

It's an interesting idea, but I don't think it would work. Three reasons.

1) Gore and Gratuity are used to sell a game, but only as a way of expressing violence. Ban gore, and they will just fall back on plain old violence. Censorship tends to have out of whack priorities. Shoot a civilians for giggles, without showing the consequences, fine. Shoot a zombie and show blood, bad. Shoot a hooker, its only bad if she accidentally shows some tits. Ban gore, and developers will just look for ways to sneak gore in. Be ahead of the pack, even if the pack is set back very far. It will be a distraction from making a good game.

2) Violence is easy to use in a video game. It makes it very obvious where the obstacle is, and what you must do to said obstacle. So we start to associate violence with childish power fantasies. The thing is, many of the most beautiful, high-art games out there addresses violence in some way. Where would Silent Hill be if it didn't show things that made censors uncomfortable? Could The Path exist in a form even remotely resembling what it is without making a few people uncomfortable, and interpret some disturbing things? Whats interpreted as gratuity is overused, but it is still a necessary tool in a devs toolbox. And when a developer starts thinking that its high time they start addressing issues like sexuality, you don't want them looking at censorship, and giving up on there magnum opus for fear of it getting shut down by some parents group.

3) Censorship is bad. I realize that your just looking for a silver lining, but I don't think the support for that idea is there. Innovation will come from including more ideas, not removing old ones.

Tell me about it, some of these comments are just vile. Ironically, while the OP's idea, despite being interesting, is not that bright, these comments display a level of unintelligence that easily surpasses it. I'll take unpopular, devil's advocate positions over thoughtless knee-jerk reactions based on sacred-cow preconcieved notions any day.

We're all sick of all these brown military shooters right?
Wrong.
Games like Halo, Gears of War and Army of 2 is a blast in split-screen with one or several friends.

Besides, these games are made for a reason, and that reason is that there are alotta people playing em, and love doing it... Me for example^^
