I just only got into doctor who a few days ago, i remembered watching a few episodes about some time ago living trees that want to eat everyone and i kinda liked it ... also i've been getting into season six on iplayer and i have almost no clue about the stuff my friend talks about
"the master, timelords (i know the doctor is one but i have no clue about what they actually are) .. some kind of extinction"
can someone put this all into a nutshell for me and maybe recommend where to start?
i was thinking episode 1 season 1 XD and even though my mate seems to know alot about the show than i do ... he admittedly doesn't know that much and we didn't really get into it.
so what season should i start at to ease me into the series?
The best thing about the revived series, from 2005 onwards, is that it keeps to the stuff from the original series but also gives explanations briefly of the most important elements from the original so that newcomers (like I was back then) can understand things well enough as well. And it does so without making it seem drawn-out in the script, by having these points explained to the companions (who wouldn't know either at first).
Anyway, brief summary. The Doctor is a member of a race called the Time Lords, who are similar to humans albeit with a few differences physically (like two hearts, and the ability to regenerate into a new form when they die). They evolved on a planet called Gallifrey, and can grow sentient time machines called TARDISes (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space). The Time Lords generally acted in the universe kind of like the USA does in the rest of the world, like international police, albeit specifically regarding time travel, and ended up in a series of wars with a biomechanical race called the Daleks. These were known as the Time Wars. One Time Lord, the Doctor, was basically a bit of a renegade, having stolen (or 'borrowed) a TARDIS as a young man to do a bit of travelling, and fought in the Time Wars for the Time Lords, eventually ending it sometime between the 1996 TV movie and the revived series of 2005, destroying all the Daleks and Time Lords together and trapping those few survivors in a time-lock which prevents them from being able to escape the war itself. Since then, in the revived series, he's basically continued travelling, burdened with guilt, and solving problems all over the universe.
Recurring enemies are other Time Lords who survived or were enemies of the Doctor in the Wars (such as The Rani, the Master, and later Rassilon, the Time Lord President), and races like the Sontarans and the Cybermen.
That's a brief summary which is all you really need to know to understand the series and get involved. Anything more can easily be found out through the Wiki, or elsewhere online, though you can glean most important info through simply watching all six of the revived series seasons (the sixth is the one being shown now though it's only 4 episodes in so far).
