I just only got into doctor who a few days ago, i remembered watching a few episodes about some time ago living trees that want to eat everyone and i kinda liked it ... also i've been getting into season six on iplayer and i have almost no clue about the stuff my friend talks about

"the master, timelords (i know the doctor is one but i have no clue about what they actually are) .. some kind of extinction"

can someone put this all into a nutshell for me and maybe recommend where to start?
i was thinking episode 1 season 1 XD and even though my mate seems to know alot about the show than i do ... he admittedly doesn't know that much and we didn't really get into it.

so what season should i start at to ease me into the series?

the master is an evil timelord and the timelords are near extinction, the doctor being one of the last.

Nooooo! You're doing it wrong. There is very little internal logic to the Doctor Who stories.

Just accept it as a bit of fun and you'll do fine.

People name the different incarnations of the Doctor by their number, so I think the current actor Matt Smith is the 9th, but I'm only a casual fan so I could be wrong. This will all be up on wikipedia.

The Timelords are extinct because of the time war with the daleks (who somehow managed to time travel too) that was threatening to consume the universe. The Doctor saw it was unwinnable and locked that whole chuck of space-time away with all the Timelords and Daleks caught in an endless looping war.

Funny thing is the Doctor knew what they'd become and had 2 seperate opportunities to stop them but refused to.

If you just want to slide into the show then watch from the start of Christopher Eccleston's series. Everything is explained from then on, there's no need to start from the beginning of the old series.

you're half right. he did lock them away but he also used a delta wave to eliminate them

From the new series.
9th Doctor - Christopher Ecclestone.
10th Doctor - David Tennant
11th Doctor - Matt Smith (Current)

When a Time-Lord dies, they regenerate into a new body, and personality.

I'm talking pre-Ecclestone series, really old ones the doctor had 2 chances to stop them when they were being created

This, and they'll be brought back again and again only to be foiled with ever increasingly convoluted plots XD

The best thing about the revived series, from 2005 onwards, is that it keeps to the stuff from the original series but also gives explanations briefly of the most important elements from the original so that newcomers (like I was back then) can understand things well enough as well. And it does so without making it seem drawn-out in the script, by having these points explained to the companions (who wouldn't know either at first).

Anyway, brief summary. The Doctor is a member of a race called the Time Lords, who are similar to humans albeit with a few differences physically (like two hearts, and the ability to regenerate into a new form when they die). They evolved on a planet called Gallifrey, and can grow sentient time machines called TARDISes (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space). The Time Lords generally acted in the universe kind of like the USA does in the rest of the world, like international police, albeit specifically regarding time travel, and ended up in a series of wars with a biomechanical race called the Daleks. These were known as the Time Wars. One Time Lord, the Doctor, was basically a bit of a renegade, having stolen (or 'borrowed) a TARDIS as a young man to do a bit of travelling, and fought in the Time Wars for the Time Lords, eventually ending it sometime between the 1996 TV movie and the revived series of 2005, destroying all the Daleks and Time Lords together and trapping those few survivors in a time-lock which prevents them from being able to escape the war itself. Since then, in the revived series, he's basically continued travelling, burdened with guilt, and solving problems all over the universe.

Recurring enemies are other Time Lords who survived or were enemies of the Doctor in the Wars (such as The Rani, the Master, and later Rassilon, the Time Lord President), and races like the Sontarans and the Cybermen.

That's a brief summary which is all you really need to know to understand the series and get involved. Anything more can easily be found out through the Wiki, or elsewhere online, though you can glean most important info through simply watching all six of the revived series seasons (the sixth is the one being shown now though it's only 4 episodes in so far).

In answer to your original post timelords are a race of beings but basically one of the oldest in the universe and therefore have extremely advanced techonology ie time travel.
The master used to be the Doctor's friend but went completely bananas looking into the time vortex. He has been used as a weapon by the time lords in the past, but escpapes to mess shit up for the Doctor at every turn because he's not quite evil but quite sadistic and insane but EXTREMELY intelligent well just as much a genius as the Doctor.... - about 1 point, so the Doctor always wins (hell it is his series). series 1 will probably be a good place to start as Christopher Eccleston (the 9th doctor) is a fantastic actor and says fantastic....fantastically. It is also when Russel T Davies (the big cheese for series 1-4)wrote decent stories and not just bad fan fiction. So, watch from there all the way til you catch up to where we are now and you'll learn a lot and get to enjoy David Tennant's good acting (as the 10th) and whince at the writing.

In answer to later posts the daleks manage to create a bit of a messed up time travel using "time corridors" which means they turn up out of the blue in messed up places.
If you can afford it watch the old Doctor Who very much worth it the stories are fantastic and so are the Doctors (apart from Sylvester Mccoy).

Just start with the new series, with Chistopher Eccleston (or David Tennant, if you don't mind having to go back to figure stuff out.) The witers of the show took it upon themselves to explain all this stuff to the audience, and they did a good job.

Matt smith is the eleventh doctor, personally if you were to start watching i would recomend series 2 episode 1 and work forward.

The Master is an old friend of the Doctor, turned mad man and is now dead. There have been many attempts by the Master to beat the Doctor, but he has never won.

The Doctor killed all the Timelords in the last great Time War. He did it to stop the Daleks, genocidal creatures that had been fighting the other side of the Time War, against the Timelords.

Grrr... Unlimited Rice Pudding ftw!

The Doctor is an alien dude who travels through time and space righting wrongs, with the assistance of various hot human females.

That's the crux of it.
