Anything from the Tales of series is good. it doesn't have the turn based battle system like most JRPGs. I'd recommend Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Vesperia from that series.

I can't recommend Persona 4 highly enough. It's got everything: interesting characters, original story, fantastic collection and fusion system and it can actually be difficult at times which is just great for me at least since I find most games are way too easy. It definitely has earned my spot for Best Game Ever.

Persona 3 is another from the series that I'd recommend. it follows all of the above except the battle system isn't as polished as P4's was.

Might as well mention the Final Fantasy series as well. I'd recommend IV, VI, VII (Just to see what the hype was about. It's not a bad game by any means, just not the best of the series.), IX (the best of the series) and X. But don't play XII. For the love of God don't play XII.

As for SRPGs I'd go with Fire Emblem for a serious story and Disgaea for some awesome laughs and insane leveling.

Persona 2 inoccent sin (NOT ETERNAL PUNISHMENT! it sucks in comparision) (just use the translation patch)
terranigma
tales of phantasia (get the ps1 remake, not the snes as the only translation patch for it well takes way to much liberties (as in adding some sex dream dialoge where it really doesnt say anything of the sort) and just gennerally isnt as good as the one available for the ps1)
ff9
xenogears
legend of dragoon (ok not as good as some of these suggestions but an interesting combat system and ok story, mabie a little lengthed out for my taste but good none the less.)
legend of evermore (technically not a j rpg as it was made outside of japan but come on....)
legend of mana (ok supposidly highly recomended but havent really played it to much to find out due to lack of persistance against annoying ai.)
illusion of gaia (not played through all of it, but it was good while i played it)
seiken densetsu 3

heh sorry for the long list.

oh and also

final fantasy mystic quest (MUHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH seriously no, dont play it is not good in anyway possible, (well i did find some of the stuf near the end fun but thats not the point)

Mystical Ninja Goemon (my FAVORITE.GAME.EVER.)
Mystical Ninja starring Goemon is an adventure game ala Zelda, not a JRPG.

Which totally isn't important at the moment, as I recommend that game just as highly as you. Quirky, expansive, and with seriously fun boss fights (I still sometimes pop the game in solely for the Impact fights).

I was thinking about it the other day and I realized I've never really played a JRPG and I decided to see what the genre is all about. So, if any of you seasoned JRPGers have any recommendations, could you please post them here so I can experience the best the genre has to offer first?

Very many thanks in advance.
It's recommendations. Just for the future.

I'd recommend FFX if you like TBC.
It has an extremely good storyline and you really get attached to the characters.

If not, I have nothing for you.

Oh, you've come to the right person if you're asking me!

I've always enjoyed the Kingdom Hearts series, it has disney and final fantasy together, and it works better than you'd think. At times it's a kiddy game, but it can get serious when it needs to. It's very mainstream, but still a worthy mention.

I'm not going to say final fantasy because I know a fuckload of people have probably said that.

Next my personal favorite has to be the .hack//G.U. games, or the .hack games in general. NOTE: if you don't like anime, you most likely won't enjoy it. It's also pretty easy, but has some good characters and features.

Believe it or not Pokemon. Enough said.

Another anime-style game is Mana Khemia. They do leveling differently because they DON'T. They instead use equipment to up stats rather than leveling up.

I'll get to you later if you need more, because that's most of what I've got, I know a few more I'll get them and tell you how they are.

Well, have fun! ^^

Chrono Trigger, Lost Odyssey, or Kingdom Hearts. Kingdom Hearts has real-time combat, and I know turn-based combat is a problem with a lot of people. Lost Odyssey is simply fantastic, and probably the best JRPG this generation (so far). Chrono Trigger is often considered the best JRPG of all-time, and is a great gateway to the genre.

All three are great, and I suggest you try them all.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and Dragon Quest VIII are must-haves. The former lacks random battles and turn-based combat, and the latter is just fun.

Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross

Get them. Now.
Chrono Trigger
A classic, always a good choice.
Chrono Cross
No why would you troll the poor guy like that?
I'm guessing I'm somewhat of an oddity for preferring Chrono Cross to Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Trigger, NOW!!! I mean it, I will...I will...call you a bad word if you don't!

Oh and despite what's going on directly above this post, Cross is worth it, too. Not as good as Trigger, but still good in its own right.
