Okay, well I know I have a lot of options now...

The ones I've seen recommended the most are FFVI/FFVII, Chrono Trigger, any Tales game, and Fire Emblem.

But seeing as my prior experience in the genre boils down to Pokemon and Mario RPGs, which of those four would you guys say would be the best gateway game to best introduce me? If you think another one is even better then you can say that too, but those seem to be the most highly recommended ones.

Thanks for all the help already!

POKEMON
SHIN MEGAMI TENSI: DEVIL SUMMONER
SMT: NOCTURNE
FINAL FANTASY 6
CHRONO TRIGGER
FIRE EMBLEM.[/HEADING]

All of these are excellent JRPG's. Trust me, you should love them.

Fixed, in my opinion FF6 trumps FF7 any day and I would strongly recommend playing (along with FF4 as it is awesome too)

Also the star ocean series is awesome but I recommend getting the fixed version of 3 and the PSP remakes of 1 and 2 for better quality (as the voice acting in the PSX version of 2 was terrible)

Well 6 is really easy to get your hands on through emulation... not that i'd, haha, know anything about that... hah... *ahem* So that would be a good one to go with. It's a true classic, and it's a GREAT place to start with final fantasy games.

I'd also say go for Tales of Vesperia if you have an Xbox 360. it's a great game with the trademark Tales "Linear Battle System" which is quite a lot of fun. So I'd say go for one of those two... Tales of Vesperia if you can spend the money, or Final Fantasy 6.

Oof...that's a tough one. For a gateway game, it would be a toss-up between FF6 and Chrono Trigger, which have some similarities from what I understand (I've only played FF6).

Of those four, though, Tales Of and Fire Emblem are are quite different. Problem being that if, say, the battle (both ATB) or exploration (both random encounter) systems of FF6 drive you away from the awesome story, there's still a chance that you'd enjoy a Tales game (realtime combat and visible encounters from Symphonia on). And Fire Emblem is a Strategy RPG, a different beast gameplay-wise altogether.

EDIT: Oh, incidentally, if you choose Final Fantasy VI and look for it via SNES emulator, look for a Final Fantasy III ROM (that was the English language release).

If you can find it, I'd suggest Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals. It's the benchmark I use to figure out if a JRPG is any good. Basically, if I have about half as much fun as when played it, it's good.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
Simply the best JRPG I've ever played.

I would ruin the image of the game if I tried to tell you about it so I just wanna say this: It is totally awesome.
The story is very good, the characters are great and I like the soundtrack. Only thing that I don't absolutely love is some of the random enemies (but most of the bosses are totally awesome too, like Rise and Kanji) and the English voice acting. The voice acting is okay but some of the characters aren't that good imo (and I really wanted to hear Kappei Yamaguchi as Teddy!).

Couple good videos (videos contain spoilers and inside jokes!):
Poke RapNight of Persona
Just a Jusco
and one more

Mystical Ninja Goemon (my FAVORITE.GAME.EVER.)
Mystical Ninja starring Goemon is an adventure game ala Zelda, not a JRPG.

Which totally isn't important at the moment, as I recommend that game just as highly as you. Quirky, expansive, and with seriously fun boss fights (I still sometimes pop the game in solely for the Impact fights).
aah... the impact fights.... now i have to go beat it again... man i loved that game

This gen...assuming you have all of the three home consoles (if not I'll list the console) and a brief reason why, cause I'm nice like that.
360 - Tales of Vesperia, it's not turn based! It's brilliant and is great if you're new to the genre and want something more action based.
- Lost Odyssey, traditional JRPG in every sense of the word, made by the creator of old school Final Fantasy.
- The Last Remnant, generic story but the gameplay is so deep it rivals WRPGs but be prepared to read the manual then a full how to play walkthrough on gamefaqs or something cause you'll need it if you want to enjoy the game.

Ps3 - Valkyria Chronicles, great mix of action/shooter and strat RPG
- Demon's Souls, I've not played it due to it not having a UK release but it's supposed to be good...and HARD.
- also White Knights Chronicles is out on the 26th Feb and that's meant to be brilliant

Wii - Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, brilliant and deep strat RPG if you don't mind mounds of text.
- You may want to play the previous Fire Emblem game from the Gamecube beforehand and on the Gamecube, it can't hurt to track down Tales of Symphonia speaking of which.
- Tales of Symphonia 2, I've not played much byt it seems to be decent so far.

hope that helps

also the DS and PSP have a slew of older JRPGs including Final Fantasies 1 - 6 on GBA, Dragon Quest, Chono Trigger, Tales of games and Star Ocean which may be worth looking at.

Would you classify the Monster Hunter Portable/Freedom Range as JRPGs? Because they are great =] Undoubtedly the best PSP games in my opinion. =D

Okay, so in the end I downloaded a SNES emulator--- I mean, went out and legally bought a SNES and with it I legally spent my well-earned money on Final Fantasy III (which is really Final Fantasy VI), Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and Super Mario World. Yeah I know that last one isn't a JRPG, but it's a damn good game anyways.

Thanks for all the help, it was very much appreciated.
