Final Fantasy, because I started with VII and hated it to no end.

Seriously, how can you fuck up a turn-based battle system that badly?!
Wait.... FF SEVEN is the one you think is fucked up?
Yes, it being the only one I've had more than 20 minutes with.
Wow. I mean, Seven was probably the last really good one (thought because they could render a 3d sprite instead of a 2d one, they started to go overboard with the weapon size, etc.}. Most everyone I've ever talked to that hated Final Fantasy as a series, didn't even play three games out of it, and those everyone that DID hate it, only played Playstation and onward, nothing before FF7.

Yeah, you're right. I have said sentences like that in the past. I was being unspecific and, essentially, wrong. If I can help it I never make generalisations like that, I always try for specific examples, I probably don't always succeed, such is life.

You're not into JRPGs you've played anyway.

No, I'm not into JRPGs. One thing you are forgetting is that genres have similar themes. I love Jazz music because I love the musical structure of it. I don't have to listen to every piece of jazz music to know I enjoy it.

Same thing with JRPGs. Of course they differ. Kingdom Hearts is very different to Final Fantasy - but I dislike both heavily. Why should I be forced to sit through every JRPG on the planet to come to the conclusion that I just don't enjoy them.

Amethyst Wind said:
Logically "I am into JRPGs" is an un-truth. Logic has its own terminology and structure within other languages. Please don't mistake me when I say something is 'logically wrong'. It doesn't mean the same as 'functionally wrong'.
And yet I have a funny feeling that if I said "I am into JRPGs" you wouldn't of said a thing.

Amethyst Wind said:
Functionally, sure you can say you like Japanese food without trying all varieties. Logically, you can't, it's unspecific and there isn't enough information in the propositions to follow it through to a valid conclusion
I love the fact that you have divided functionality and logic here. The are, or rather should, be near synonyms. No one on Earth follows your mental "logic" here. Admit it!

Amethyst Wind said:
The reason I didn't pick up on other people talking in general terms about genres is because I'm already addressing the concept in my discussion with you. Repetition will come later if needed.
I'm sorry, but, I don't believe you. I want to, but I just don't haha. I think the only reason you initiated this argument is because you like JRPGs and you want to defend them. Your post count would be in the millions if you really thought this way, because every time someone says they like or dislike a genre you'd have to call them out.

Amethyst Wind said:
Of course you can dismiss or praise something, provided you've experienced it. You can't dismiss an entire perceived group simply through specific examples you've experienced, you can only dismiss the examples.

Amethyst Wind said:
All this "next time, make sure you..." stuff leads me to believe that you're angry about our exchange here. I hope this isn't the case. This is simply Devil's Advocate for me (possibly some Socratic reasoning thrown in too, though I'm not sure if that's right, I'll need to get back to you), there's no ill intention here, I'm simply looking for a frank and engaging discussion. You haven't disappointed.
I'm not angry with you in the slightest. The repetition of "next time..." was to enforce how ludicrous your point is. As I said before, the world doesn't work the way you are arguing here. If every piece of Chinese food I have eaten has disgusted me, then I am allowed to say "I do not like Chinese food". I don't have to delve into a discussion involving abstract logic saying:

"Well, rather, I should clarify that I don't like fried rice, beef noodle soup, honey chicken, honey prawns, Mongolian beef, Kung Pao chicken, Jiaozi or Youtiao. Similarly, I have a strong distaste for Hot and sour soup, Won ton soup, ginger duck, fish cake and spring rolls. However, I have not had dish number 23 and dish number 38 from my local Chinese resturant yet. So, that leads me to believe that perhaps my original - and may I say totally illogical! - thought of not enjoying Chinese food Per se was incorrect. So, excuse me for that. Let me reprhase. I don't like fried rice, beef noodle soup, honey chicken, honey prawns, Mongolian beef, Kung Pao chicken, Jiaozi or Youtiao. Hot and sour soup, Won ton soup, ginger duck, fish cake and spring rolls. There."

That sounds more like a conversation with Rain Man rather than someone who is logical to me!

The the whole Warcraft universe. I like Starcraft, but not Warcraft (oh, apart from the minigames.. you know, footmen and stuff.. But that's like saying you like math just because you have a kick-ass calculator that you can play tetris on).

So there's one for you..

WoW. I really hate the mindless grinding in MMORPGs.

On another note, the other day when I went to a video game store, a 12 year-old kid wanted to buy WoW Cataclysm and his mum was asking the store assistant about the game only to be told that she needed the original WoW, WoW: The Burning Crusade and WoW: Wrath of the Lich King. The bewildered look on her face was priceless.

Which brings me to my next point, the number of expansion packs in WoW is mind-boggling.

i was just reading about the new zelda sword game coming out, and it hit me... that's an exciting event to so many gamers, and i couldn't care less about anything zelda whatsoever. i never got into the series (yes i've played it) and cant imagine ever getting it. that's not to say its a bad game though.

anyways, it got me thinking, what major gaming franchises have you never gotten into? why?
Similarly, I never got why people loved the FPS Metroid games. I just hate how the locations were so isolated, the game forced you to do things in such a way it may as well have been a bunch of quick time events, and the auto-locking seemed to take all the fun out of making it an FPS.

Bioware's games didn't seem like anything interesting either. It was like watching one of those god awful, cheap American sci-fi tv shows.

The Modern Warfare series, as I can't understand how realism is supposed to be a plus thing.

Let's see...

Never got into Final Fantasy, Fallout, Total War series, Starcraft, FEAR, Zelda, Silent Hill, lot's of games that were before the time I started to actually play video games (I remember the first console game I ever played was Medal of Honor: Rising Sun)

Oh, and most fighting games. I'm talking to you Mortal Kombat.

Edit: I forgot a MAJOR one. Metal Gear Solid. I remember my cousin got me the PSP one and it was so bad that I've forever shied away from anything with Snake, not including SSBB.

First, there's Final Fantasy. To be fair, I played the first three as a child, although never got far into them (which didn't matter back then, I'd just replay the beginnings a lot). But other than that, it just never drew me in. There's nothing WRONG with them, I like them from afar, but I'm just not interested in playing them.

Metal Gear Solid I perhaps gave less of a chance. I've given it a shot since I enjoy stealth games, but I personally found it a little on the dated and kind-of boring side. Just my opinion.

Oh, and Resident Evil. Played Outbreak, I believe it was, and gave 5 a decent chance because of the coop, but they never struck me as a great franchise, more just average-to-above-average games with zombies. Then again, I'm a Silent Hill kind of person, so that might be a factor.

Almost forgot Metroid. Never played any of them other than the first few minutes of that first Wii one, never had the urge to play others or any further. Sorry, Metroid fans!

It's about average for an MMO. They tend to have a hell-load of expansions compared to offline games.

Silent Hill. The only one I've played is The Room which is a really bad choice as a first game in the series to play. But I no longer have access to Silent Hill 1, 2, & 3. Also, from what I've heard Homecoming isn't the best either. I don't like or dislike the game since I have so little to base it on.

Medal of Honor (except for the new game, I love that one). I just wasn't too interested in war shooters at all up until I played some of the Call of Duty games and expanded onto Medal of Honor. So as a result the new Medal of Honor and one of the PS1 games are the only ones I've played in the series.

Fallout. It seems interesting, but I've just had no real desire to play it.

Elder Scrolls. They're alright games but as RPGs they just seem rather...bland. I've played some RPG games that I've found far more enjoyable so those are the ones I'll stick to.

FFVII has, hands-down, the worst battle system of any console game, ever.
I know you're trying to make the extreme statement on purpose, but it just makes you seems stupid. Go play "McFarlane's Evil Prophecy", or more in line with RPGs, "Magna Carta: Crimson Stigmata". Or probably THE actual worst, "Unlimited saga". You'll soon find that these are far, far worse battle systems.

Madden and other 'EA once a year' crap.

Never understood why I should pay year after year for basically the same thing.
Same reason why I rarely played games like 'Dynasty Warriors'.

I wish that I had gotten into mass effect when it came out. now I just feel out of the loop and I don't feel like playing 2 80 hour games to catch up.
They're not even close to 80 hours combined.

OT: Star Wars. To me, it's a plot-hole ridden, clichéd mess of a series.
