Canadian Doctor fan here. My father had mentioned the glory days of watching this as a kid when the new serise came on and when my girlfriend said she looooooooves it, I had no choice but to start watching. Finished season nine when I went to visit her in England and have seen episodes here and there on Space. Though I wish I was able to have followed the Doctor for longer, I do plan on getting my gruby little hands on the older episodes and watching them with her.

As for my favorite Doctor? Well, I've only seen since the re-vamp, so really I only have three to choose from, but the order is this:

1) David Tennant
2) Christopher Eccleston
3) Matt Smith

David Tennant is a no-brainer. He was an amazing Doctor, full of curiosity and excitement when needed, had great comedic timing and could sitll look terribly pissed off and badass when need be. He was the perfect package. Christopher Eccleston takes my #2 spot if only because he can do all of the above mentioned, just not as vibrantly as Mr. Tennant. Matt Smith is third only because he can't do everything above in a manner that I've seen to be compitant. He looks more like a child roaming aimlessly than that child who wants to show you something really cool. Though, to be fair, Matt Smith easily has some of the best lines ever.

Doctor Who seems fairly popular in Australia, which is where I live - I know a lot of fans. It could just be that I tend to make friends with geeky people who're into Doctor Who, though.

I prefer Tennant to Smith, although if I compare Doctors to perfume, then maybe I just haven't been around Matt Smith for long enough to really let every aspect of him sink in and be fully experienced...okay I don't know where I was going with that. But yeah, David Tennant just has this intensity and energy that made him a great Doctor, and as well as that he was just very witty and funny, just like the Doctor should be.

As for the whole Moffat vs. Davies thing, well, they both have something to offer, but overall I think that most of the episodes that I liked best were all by Moffat, even though Davies' has some good ones too. It's hard to decide, really.

Fayettevilel, AR here, and I luv me some Who. Though I've been more a fan of The Master these days to be honest...

Anywho, as for the debate... I liked Tenant's Doctor. I felt he almost perfectly captured the Doc's famous sense of whimsy and wonder with the universe and humanity in general, but at the same time he expressed the darker, more war torn side of him more often brought up since the series' re-invigoration. Smith's doctor has seemed a bit flacid to me by comparison, very dry, a bit boorish. It's kind of like watching a Crispin Glover look-a-like try to imitate previous actor's portrayals of the character. Not fun...

My fave horse for the run though would be Eccleston. So far, to me at least, he's been the best doctor since Tom Baker to give the full gamut of the doctor's psyche. I could watch him go from eerily giddy to raving in anger, all over issues noone but an shell-shocked immortal would understand, in a single scene. Too bad he just got the one season. Boo. *pout face*

I saw the title of this thread and I was like "Hell-f**king-yeah". Seriously, huge fan living in Australia. I collect old ones as well as the new ones and the stories are still as excellent as ever. The CGI has upgraded with awesome results and it never stops being awesome. Now to answer debates:

Tennant has more charm and wit than Smith. Smith has a quirky sense of humour and a bow tie. Then again Tennant had a trench coat. But Smith seems to be trying too hard to be quirky sometimes.

I'm going with Tennant FTW.

I find Stephen Moffatt has the best stories, he was responsible for the greater of Tennant's stories including Blink, Silence in the Library and The Girl in the Fireplace. Russell T. Davies knows how to end a series, with Bad Wolf and The Stolen Earth. I quite like Smith's stories and I can't seem to find one which I wouldn't want to watch again, most of which were written by Stephen Moffatt.

So, I'm with Stephen Moffatt. Brilliant writer.
Now to begin a new debate:

Daleks or Cybermen

I absolutely love the Daleks in pretty much every aspect. I saw one episode of Doctor Who between the ages of 7 and 15 one night on ABC. It was an old episode from like the First Doctor and it had the Daleks and the way they moved freaked me out. Every time I thought about Doctor Who until I properly got into it, I thought about the Daleks and I got chills. The Cybermen are quite appealling in their design and idea and I always enjoy their episodes but they just aren't the Daleks.

Final verdict: Daleks.

Discuss...

I'm not English but a big fan of the 2005- series. I suppose I have to thank the sci-fi channel for introducing me to the show. The first time I saw a bit of the show, I couldn't think of anything else other then "why is this guy so cheery?..." XD

Except I wouldn't shorten "Doctor" to "Dr", because that's how I am
Same here. That's his name, not a title, it doesn't make sense to shorten it.

Hear, hear! She annoys the hell outta me for some reason. Leaving her freaking fiancee behind before the wedding day is one thing that ads to my resentment.

Smith is not bad but I just don't feel like he fits in the role. I generally dislike the last series because they seem to be marketing it to the young adult demographic. Even the visuals bore me, they are better but venture into the unreamrkable woods of no return.
To top it all off, a regeneration - effectively a semi-reboot/sometimes reimagination - every 1.5 years is ridiculous. They will be spending a total of half a season to re-explain everything that fans already know.
Ecclestone was the revived series' best Doctor.

I like Colin Baker as the Doctor, so that might explain things - I am insane.

Every 1.5 years?

William Hartnell seasons 1- episode 8 of season 4
Patrick Troughton episode 9 of season 4 to end of season 6
Jon Pertwee seasons 7 to 11
Tom Baker seasons 12 to 18
Peter Davison season 19 to 21
Colin Baker season 22 and 23 (then sacked)
Sylvestor McCoy season 24 to 26 (series cancelled)
Paul McGann 1996 tv movie (series never happened)
Christopher Eccleston season 1/27
David Tennant season 2/28 to 4/30 (plus the 2009 specials)
Matt Smith season 5/31-

Only Christopher Ecclestone had the regeneration kick in before 2 seasons had passed. The average length of a Doctor is 3.22 seasons.

Wow I didn't think i'd get this wide a responce i always thought it was a bit obscure abroad, nice to see that its reached so many people. Thank you to all who have posted thus far and those who do in the future :) Personally I'm a bit torn between the two but I think there's something about Matt Smith that I prefer, probably the wit to be honest. I think Tennant is the better actor of the two but I think Smith's Doctor is just slightly more awesome. I'm also a Moffat fan mostly RTD was good with long reachuing plots but I think some of the standalones fell a little flat with the exception of Midnight.

I'm a Canadian but I've never watched the show. My high school french teacher, however, would go on and on about it. He was kind of old though, so us students just thought that it was a show that was canceled back in the day.

American Doctor Who fan here.

I first got on board with "Blink," which remains one of my all-time favorite episodes. I went back and watched the entirety of the 9th Doctor's tenure (I can't remember his name, sorry) and I found that I liked him as well. I'm still not too fond of Rose, though. As for Matt Smith, I like him as well, but it took me a while to get used to the new inside of the TARDIS as well as the new sonic screwdriver. I think that all the Doctors bring something different to the table (from what I've seen thus far; I do plan on eventually somehow watching the original episodes). However, I do really like the look Smith pulled off with the fez.

Dutch Who-fan reporting. Can't wait for the new Christmas episode, sadly I'll have to download as we all of a sudden lack BBC2. Stupid digital TV nonsense...

As for the Smith vs Tennant, I was very wary of Smith at first but after a few episodes I loved him to bits. Where Tennant was more like an intergalactica policeman (SHADOW PROCLAMATION!!!!) Smith has a more silly, adventurist feel to it.

Also, I never got the argument why Smith is a Tennant copy. Are there similarities? Of course, but Smith radiates a very different type of energy than Tennant.

I'm from Puerto Rico and started seeing Doctor Who since Christopher Eccleston.
Never really watched any of the old Doctor even though I've been meaning to.
Eccleston was great so was Tennant I though Smith wasn't gonna be good but I was wrong.
For the moment I think Moffat if doing a good job and I hope the special and the next seasons are good.

I was wondering if any one on here watches Doctor Who and lives abroad and more particularly what your perspective is on the Smith veres Tennant debate and Stephen Moffat's series vs Russel T Davis' series?
Yank here.

I have only seen a few serials prior to the 2005 reboot, but I've loved the series since then. Tennant is still my favourite, and while I do like Smith, I don't think he'll ever replace it.

As for Moffat v Daves, when I first heard about the switch, I was against it. Then I realised Moffat had written a lot of my favourite Who episodes in the reboot. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances remained my favourite up until Blink. I loved the new series, except once they actually got to the whole "Pandorica" deal near the end.

And as a bonus answer, I miss both Martha Jones and Donna noble as companions. Though I am partial to redheads....

American, grew up with my brother watching it on PBS, and recently rediscovered it to introduce to my wife and son.

I'm 4th Doctor all the way for the old seasons, but for the new I'm still on the fence about Smith. He portrays the Doctor well for the Horror-of-the-week stories, but so far I haven't seen the emotional, tear-jerking, heart crushing range that Tennant had. I loved Eccleston, for the time he had, but he really didn't get a chance to fit his feet in the shoes before he left.

I really hope we see [The Master] again as a more recurring character...probably as a replacement for the Daleks, which already got slightly boring before they were turned into color-coded-gumball-machines...
Actually, there's some historical precedent for multi-colored Daleks. Given that the Daleks were trying to reboot themselves into their original "un-evolved" state, it makes some sense that they would look toward previous Dalek designs.

If you go back to the two movies starring Peter Cushing -- Doctor Who and The Daleks [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059126/], and Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 AD [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060278/], both of them had colorful Daleks.

Personally, I think it was less searching for historical precedent and more trying to reset the clock on the design copyright. But even so, color-coded Daleks are not new.
