Seeing as you live on the West Coast of America, and Japan is an island group on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, why don't you go by boat?

If you're lucky, you may even be able to find a cruise ship or something similar on which you could work as crew to cover the cost of your journey.

It doesn't work like that. You have to sign a contract and everything. Most of the cruise ship staff is gone for ten months, and then goes home for a few.

I did this once with starcraft. I was ready to go to japan and meet hot japanese girls who like video games, but when I stepped out of the plane I found out I was in Korea, not Japan.

I'd say find a cheap airflight and take a bus to the airport. Once in you're japan it's all buses and subways so you're good there. I'm sure a hotel there is ridiculous, but you could see about staying in one of those capsule hotels.
