Buy tickets month in advance. i spent three months in eastern Australia. Living in Montana (US) i had to take a 3 hour flight to Colorado, a 5.5 hour flight to L.A., then a 16 hour flight to Sydney. Round trip cost me $2,500. It was so cheap cause i bought the tickets 4.5 months in advance and i spent 3 weeks researching the cheapest routes.

-buy in advance (as far back as possible)
-1st class is needlessly expensive when 2nd class will get you where your going
-go for longer than a week. i spent 24 and a half hours on a plane, Also on top of that i spent over 10 hours in various airports. Plan your trip accordingly and recognize that this will exhaust you.

[EDIT] Also realize that traveling to another country almost invariably costs an arm and a leg. if you live in the US expect to pay a couple thousand dollars for tickets alone. Not to mention other travel expenses.

Does that included accommodation? Also where are you traveling from? I was looking at going earlier this year and found return flight for around $700 pp. (from Sydney)
ya, hotel room and car included

It costs alot of money to fly to Japan because of the fear of Godzilla and dancing robots.
But really there is no cheap way of going to Japan because I'm going there in about 3 years and that's going to cost about 500 pounds and that's only because I got them cheap! ( well I worked for them)

No, but you could kayak.

If anyone asks why, just remind them that google always knows what is best for you.
If Google knows what's best, then why on the Australian leg is it trying to make people kayak down rivers that have water in them maybe once every 3 or so years?

Because Goggle likes it's routes to be a challenge Plus it's assuming you like kayaking, thus would be travelling when said rivers have water in them to fufill your kayaking needs?

Once you hit land it figures you trade your ocean kayak for a car to resume driving, and adjusts the directions accordingly.

Well that made my day - I must know, was that added in, or did it genuinely recommend Kayaking across the pacific ocean?

I can get you there. It will cost you five thousand Rubles and two cans of kerosene. As well you will share your seats with the goats. YOU WILL SHARE THEM! I will take you to Japan after we have stopped in several places where I cannot guarantee you will not be killed or sold by me into slavery to the locals. The in flight movie will be смерть к капиталистическим свиньям также я люблю пирог 2: Electric Boogaloo.
You could have simply said 'fly Aeroflot'.

It genuinely (well jokingly, I don't think anyone is actually supposed to follow those directions) recommends kayaking across the Pacific ocean if you choose a start and end location that require crossing it. It used to tell you to swim across the Atlantic ocean.

Become a world famous gamer, get paid to travel there for some big tournament. Then you just have to pay for your girlfriend.
I did this once with starcraft. I was ready to go to japan and meet hot japanese girls who like video games, but when I stepped out of the plane I found out I was in Korea, not Japan.

FUUUUUUUUUUUU

OP if you want to go to japan don't go for just a week, its a lot of money at least stay a month if possible.
and stay with a host family

It's only £550 on the first site I googled.

But that's probably a terrible site, because it spells special wrong.

Edit: From £399.

http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/Japan/

There's also a departing from USA option.
I happen to live near one of the two cities you are likely to get a flight to Japan from, and it is still around $1100 per person for a flight to Tokyo. It's only going to be more if they have to hop a flight or two to get to LA or Seattle first.

lol, seriously?
Yes, get directions on google maps that require crossing the Pacific, it will tell you the same.

It used to tell you to swim across the Atlantic if you asked for directions that required crossing that ocean.

Sneak on a C-5 at your local Air Force base, nothing could possibly go wrong with that plan.

Yeah.... No. Cheap flights are almost mythical. Seriously. Just save up for a year or two, then take a 2 week holiday. With 12 hour+ flights, you don't want to spend a week, because it will basically be a 4 day holiday after jetlag and such.
