Just spray and pray my friend, just spray and pray.
It's what most people do anyway, so you will start off on a pretty average level.

Switch to Tactical controller layout (360) for easier dropshots. People will call you cheap, but those people are dumb.
What's the Tactical layout?
It switches the knife and crouch/prone buttons. So your crouch/prone is on the right thumbstick. This lets you drop very quickly AND continue aiming while you drop. This is how you see people pulling off "dropshots" all the time (firing while going prone). This makes you a very difficult target to hit in 1v1 situations.

The only downside to this is that your knife is generally out of reach, so "panic knifing" is almost out of the question. It's a trade-off, but generally one that's worth it.

Can't remember really, I know I watched one of his Super Mario World hacks and was drawn in. He's laid back and pretty good at CoD. Been a fan for about a year now.
SSoHPKC?

OT: Also, most youtube commentators don't really say anything regarding the game. They mainly just talk about their lives and shit.

From the sound of things (especially for your deaths) you might want to invest in Flak Jacket, it helps against the ever annoying RC-XD and the pro variant helps against Napalm.

I think you should drop the silencer for now, it works on some of the later guns but not the early ones, especially the MP5K. I also think you should customize your load out for multiple situations.

I kept seeing the words "K/D Ratio" I've never given any care to this magical number that others seem to think means something. Really, slaving over K/D leads to nothing but frustration, just have fun.

Play with friends and it'll help the experience.

Unlike others I don't think there is really any unusable weapon or one that makes all others obsolete, I think that some guns just need a certain play style in order to be effective. I can use most weapons, except the sniper rifles and launchers (but I never use them anyways), and even done pretty well with "Useless" weapons like the Uzi. Try everything and you'll find what you like.

Another aspect that I enjoy are the contracts, these set (mostly) viable goals for you to accomplish and also encourage using different weapons.

Finally, I'd like to encourage you to try the single player, its pretty good and will teach you quite a few basics. And other games in the series are out there as well, so you should think about playing them as well. I personally find CoD2 to be the best in the series, well worth checking out.

So if you see lots of Bush Wookies running around don't trust the UAV too much, just use it to get a general idea of where they are spawning.
I agree with this point. The counter UAV is like 30 times more useful than the UAV itself. Also, if you're playing anything other than TDM or SND (good on you if you are) you shouldn't worry about getting killed at all. Objective-based games will pretty much always result in a lower K/D than TDM games if you're playing them correctly, unless your team doesn't completely suck (a rarity in public matches when you have no friends online).

P.S. Miracle, "Bush Wookies" may be the best thing I've ever seen on this forum. You win one internets!

Try not to talk tough; that way people can't call you out if they wipe the floor with you.

Try to fire the RPG-7 on a down-ward trajectory which means fire from above down into the ground since the rockets fly like drunk birds.

Depending on the type of person you are, always have either the Spyplane or the RC-XD killstreak active. If you like being the active inteligence operative, then use the spyplane. If you like to be the jerk that everybody hates but you like laughing at their frustration after the game, use the RC-XD. No points for guessing which one I am. :)

If you're going for a Pro perk that requires you get hip-fire kills, buy the dual-weapon attachment as it forces you to fire from the hip.

If someone calls in a choppergunner and you DON'T have Ghost pro, get inside a building ASAP. The choppergunner in Black Ops is more powerful than in Modern Warfare 2. In MW2, the choppergunner would fly into the center of the map sometimes thus giving you a chance to shoot it down as the turret couldn't turn 360 degrees. In Black Ops however, the chopper stays on the outter edge of the map which gives the gunner an almost full view, like 97%, of the map so he can kill you whenever he wants thus making it the most devistating killstreak in the game.

Everything else I can think of has either been covered or is relatively common sense.

Well, that's a lot more useful. I'm used to crouching on the right stick.

Like most gamers nowadays, I love shooters. Give me a game with some guns and a few opponents and I'll enjoy it (most of the times), but there's one shooter I had never played despite its popularity: Call of Duty. Even after the success of Modern Warfare, World at War, Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops, most recently, I had never played it. I decided to give it a try last weekend and I rented Black Ops. I started playing and realized... I didn't know what I was doing. It was a shooter like any other, but my k/d ratio was 0.3 after a few matches and I found out I was dying more than I should.

I know it's normal for that to happen, but ending matches with 4 kills and 15 deaths isn't my idea of fun. I kept playing to try to get better at it but I'm still coming out with negative scores. The game itself is ok. It's not a bad shooter, just not that magnificent. I know a lot of you are going to say "Maybe you just don't like it." or "You just suck at it" or "Bad Company 2 is better, anwyays." (Last one is true.) but, the thing is: A.) I actually like it. It's not the mind-blowing life-changing explosion of gaming perfection everyone makes it out to be, but it's a decent shooter that provides some tasty entertainment... and you can shoot knives at people.
B.) I suck at it because I'm just starting out.
C.) I know Bad Company 2 is better, but none of my friends have it. Playing with a bunch of silent, uncoordinated teammates is not as fun as playing with your loud friends.

Seeing as how I kind of enjoy it and would like to continue, I thought I'd ask other people for advice to see if I can get better or at least stop sucking enough to help the team rather than be a liability.

What I do during a match:
I use mostly a Silenced M16 with a reflex sight, Lightweight, Warlord and Tactical mask (I use nova grenades) or a Silenced MP5K with an extended magazine, Lightweight, Warlord and Hacker (I hate claymores).
My play style is run 'n gun. I'm constantly moving around, mostly around the outside of the map, picking off any unlucky players who happen to be there. I'm pretty accurate with the gas grenades and I can use them effectively since I can walk through the gas using the T. Mask perk (I throw a grenade then walk straight through it to ambush whoever's on the other side of the cloud.) I also enjoy using the ballistic knife and can calculate its trajectory on an ok level.

Ways I keep dying:
Killstreaks. I'm that unlucky guy that gets napalm strikes dumped on him. It's happened twice already. I always get killed from the back, too. If I die 10 times in a match, 9 of those deaths will be from an enemy standing behind me. I'm pretty bad at calculating the appropriate melee distance, too.

So, Escapists, any tips?

EDIT
A lot of people have told me to not get pissed off if I get killed. Well, that's definitely something I didn't take into consideration. I get stark-raving mad after dying 3 times in a row. I guess that breaks my concentration.

A lot of people have probably already quoted you and said this, so I'll just reinforce it: Do not run and gun in a CoD game. That's the absolute best advice I can give you. I never had fun with CoD multiplayer until I figured out that running and gunning gets you very dead very quickly. Otherwise, most of the stuff you're doing is fine. Just learn to be a lot more patient and use cover. Sprinting is for moving from cover to cover quickly, NOT for bouncing around the map like a pinball. That doesn't work. You die quickly when doing that.

Otherwise:

-Stay out of the middle
-Be aware of spawn points and popular camping spots.
-Be aware of where most of your teammates are dying, and don't be the hero. You aren't Billy Badass, you're just as prone to death as your teammates.
-People tell you that the beginning weapons are usable. Well, they certainly are, but the higher-ranked weapons are still better. Pick up one you haven't unlocked when, and only when, you've got the chance. Odds are it's better than the piece of shit you've got in your hands at the moment, anyway.
My idea of CoD comes from watching gameplay videos on YouTube, and those guys run around like Billy Badass yelling "EAT MAH LEAD!" while bouncing around the map like a pinball. Maybe it's a skill thing.

I'll try to play it a lot safer and I'll keep the ballistic knife out of my inventory for now.

For the ones who run and gun, it's a harder than it looks. You really need to be able to predict the maps, lines of sight and player's actions and have a fair bit of situational awareness. They also know a bunch of gameplay things to exploit. However, it's not so much "manual dexterity" as it is paying attention, experience and good tactics.

It's also important to note that most of those gameplay videos are exaggerated. 95% of their games aren't like that and when they do have those super scores it's usually because the other team is completely disorganized or they are hosting the match.

I've been a player since the first CoD. I consider myself an above average player, and usually end up in the top three in terms of score.

Spectate the good players if you can. That will give you an idea of how a player actually plays without seeing someone edit a video with their one in a million matches. This is hard on consoles as their are less players.

The M16 is a solid gun for noobs as its extremely accurate, and the three round burst can easily drop another player in one go. It's good for medium range fighting, and is best used from behind cover, stationary. With a red dot sight, your headshot count will sky rocket. Aim for the upper torso, but watch out for arms as they count for less damage, making your killing shot just not enough.

Don't get addicted to SMGs. They're sometimes guns.

Silencers are all or nothing. Either put on ghost and ninja, or take off the silencer.

Set the sensitivity up to max. Get used to max. A large part of Call of Duty is how fluid it is. Speed and accuracy are very important.

Use the minimap.

Be aware of your surroundings and how spawns can screw you over. If the spawn flips and your team is on the other side of the map, and you're alone. You will probably be knifed in the back soon.

Learn the frag inside and out. It's better than the semtex for the simple reason that you can cook it. You don't need to stick anyone if it blows up in their face. A well tossed frag has no danger indicator to run away from.

As for Black Ops specifically. Shoot everything down. Spy planes, counter spy planes, helicopters, you can even shoot down care packages if you're fast enough. People will rage hard when you shoot their spy planes down.

Stay calm while playing. The second you get pissed is the second you'll start dying a lot.

Sucks that you had to be introduced to Call of Duty with Black Ops. On the console, no less.

I played Modern Warfare at my Cousin's place for about two hours. Dual wield some powerful handguns and go Rambo on their asses. K/D score on my second game was 52/3.

Shit be easy man. I'd never even touched a PS3 before either, let alone a Call of Duty game.
Sounds like you're a natural or those handguns are the AWP of the CoD world.
Dual USP+Steady Aim=pixel perfect accuracy w/ oneshot kills on hardcore, only downside is that half of your bullets are fired with the sight buttons.

As for advice OP:
Play all the call of duties in order. They generally build upon the mechanics of the previous one, starting at the end of the series, you're generally being overwhelmed by obscure features that you were supposed to have picked up in the prequel. And the community gets progressively less hardcore with each game. After getting your non-regenerating face kicked in repeatedly in UO until you finally eke out a 1:10 ratio, you join a pubbie server of WaW and feel like a god among men when you get the 7 kill streak before you have to reload your Garand.

Try to stay away from the most recent 2, their retarded matchmaking means you'll be faced randomly against cheaters and pros, the server browser on the earlier 5(counting UO in place of 3) allows you to find one populated by people from roughly your skill level and learn there.
