I hate the fact that Sheppard is supposed to rescue earth. I mean, how many times did you rescue earth from an invading alien race in games? The universe of Mass Effect is so vast and well developed and then this? I think it would be far more interesting if earth was in fact destroyed within the first three hours of the game.
The reapers attack earth, not because it's most imporetent place to attack, as some people have assumed, but because it's the next closest mass relay. They were coming up from the south... east? If you look, the Alpha Relay, at the very southeastern edge, the one we distroyed.... the next closet relay is ours.

*begin rampent speculation!*

The game starts with them arriving at Earth. It'll more or less be there beachhead. Where the fight *starts*. Keep in mind what the reapers seem to do. They don't just "wipe out" life, they more or less assimalate it into new reapers... that takes time... so they'll prolly be at earth, the bulk of the forces that is, for a while. Which just happens to be shepards home, so of course he's got a vested intrest in saving it. And by stoping the reapers at earth... he WILL save the rest of the galixie. Which will prolly be his rallying cry for everyone to chip in and help.

It's not as much a "save earth" story as people make it out to be, or i should say, it doesn't have to be. (again, just wild speculation, based on what i know from the ME games/books/comic/ and codexes... i'm an info junkie...)

What bothers me about the marketing is the tone. They make the game sound small with its intense focus on Earth. Mass Effect is supposed to be big: a space opera where the scale far surpasses a single conflict. This is important to me, as it makes it seem less like that space opera, and more of a comic book instead.
Thankfully it wont be i think. The game informer article says you will be exploring space to gather army allies. But you have to help them with problems(like the geth or krogans)
But of course it tote it combat now. same with the original about 2 years ago. The story is known. the reapers came and they aare bad. whats left to be known other then BIG plot points. it was the same with me2. the collectors are stealing colonies and you got to save them

How do you make trailers about the story, exactly, without giving away huge massive spoilers?

I'm trying to avoid as much info as possible, myself.

The world does not really know how to market a game like this. All they know is that it's Gears of War with Star Trek characters. That's what these people think. They don't think people can handle anything interesting, so they're sticking to what they know. As a result, it makes everything seem rather generic.

But that's marketing for you.

Yeah, I would have preferred more a focus on the RPG elements of this RPG-shooter, but, well, the marketers go where the money is.
Fortunately, it looks like there is now. You get weapon mods and branching abilities (that branch more times than in ME2), so sort of a best-of-both-worlds for ME1 and ME2 :)

Whether it's going to be as good as the crop of excellent RPGs and RPG-hybrids coming out in 2011 is another matter, but more good games can't be anything but a good thing.

I don't need to look at ME3 marketing to buy it. I absolutely adore first 2 games. Every science fiction fan does.

The trailers have been shit so far, but that's just because they're poorly made trailers.

I haven't paid attention to the marketing, because, in my mind, the marketing for Mass Effect 3 was Mass Effects 1 & 2. That sold me.
That's a good way of looking at it. I'm with you. Fact is, even if Mass Effect 3 somehow manages to suck, no way could I leave one of my favorite sci-fi storylines mid-way; I'd play it and see how my choices played out regardless.

Bioware's marketing has always been awful. Mostly because they aren't targeting us. Let's be honest, we know we're going to get it. They don't need to sell us on the game. They need to sell other people. People who may never have heard of Bioware or Mass Effect. That's why I never look at advertising from them. The way they advertised nearly turned me off of DA, DA2, and ME2, and I enjoyed all three games quite a bit. But their advertising isn't for me.

I'm on a self-imposed media blackout for all things ME3. This so far has been the greatest compromise of said black-out. But, reading a reaction to a trailer isn't that much of a breach, is it?

OT: Judging movies/games/etc. based on their trailers isn't all that wise. Do I really need to find you one of the many popular mash-ups where people play epic music and make strategic cuts to make terrible movies look good?
