Anyone Else Bothered by the Marketing of Mass Effect 3?

Overall, in the marketing and in showcasing ME3, Bioware has given very little for me to be excited about. They have really been touting the combat but that's not what I play the Mass Effect games for. The combat has always been competent (with ME2 being far better than the first) but I play for the story. The debut trailer was interesting and did well conveying it's message of "Yo man! Earth...it's fucked!" but I want to see more of the story. Anyone remember any of ME2's trailers? Those were fucking awesome. I remain vigilant as I do have a massive boner for this series, most of Bioware's games and really any game with a solid story but the way they've been presenting this game has me a little worried that they may have spent too much time on the combat. Your thoughts?

(I also believe I may have just created a thinly veiled "Am I the only one who..." post. Damn.)

Urg. This topic. Again. Commence the with the chants of, "Bioware betraaaayed me!", "DA2 sucked!" and "The stats aren't big enough!"

...

I have no real concerns for ME3. ME2 was awesome and an improvement on ME1 in almost every way. If they continue in that direction then I shall be a happy customer. The gameplay previews I have seen all looked promising.

However, I agree the early trailers have been pretty crappy. Especially when compared to the awesome ones that accompanied ME2...

Damn, that's gorgeous.

Then again, the trailers for the original Mass Effect were bloody awful as well.

...

"Let's finish this!" Bleeeaarrg.

So yeah... I wouldn't put a lot of weight on them.

I haven't paid attention to the marketing, because, in my mind, the marketing for Mass Effect 3 was Mass Effects 1 & 2. That sold me.

Just because the trailers and marketing aren't showing off that rich story doesn't mean it isn't going to be there in the finished product.

What about the exotic locales like New York City and London? It would've been nice to see Earth in one of the previous games, but now it's just going to be a pile of war-torn debris.
Also, what happened to using the right tools for the job? Unless the marketing is lying, and it probably is in this case, were going to personally fight multiple reapers, not that I'm expecting anything like Skyrim's promise of dragons. We're taking on these reapers with a holographic switchblade... that doesn't stand a chance of even breaching the hull. Hell, the marketing showed some random mook getting hit with the thing and losing less heath than the guys did in ME1 when Tali pistol whips.

On the plus side, we get to see the Quarian home world. That's why people play these games, right?

What bothers me about the marketing is the tone. They make the game sound small with its intense focus on Earth. Mass Effect is supposed to be big: a space opera where the scale far surpasses a single conflict. This is important to me, as it makes it seem less like that space opera, and more of a comic book instead.

I hate the fact that Sheppard is supposed to rescue earth. I mean, how many times did you rescue earth from an invading alien race in games? The universe of Mass Effect is so vast and well developed and then this? I think it would be far more interesting if earth was in fact destroyed within the first three hours of the game.

The game isn't being released for atleast 8 months, I'd rather they keep the marketing of the story on the wraps untill december or something.

ME2's trailers and previews gave away too freaking much of the story (Shepard dies! The Collectors are helping the Reapers! Garrus is Archangel! You will work for Cerberus! Here's every major character in the game! We don't want you to be surprised be anything at all!). That's why I've been avoiding the ME3 trailers and previews (all I've seen is the reveal trailer from back in December).

Yeah, I would have preferred more a focus on the RPG elements of this RPG-shooter, but, well, the marketers go where the money is.

Trust me, they don't need marketing. They've already sold it, with promises of bringing Liara back, and maybe letting us kill Miranda.

The thing is that most people (myself included) don't want any spoilers or many story details before the game comes out, which limits what BioWare can do with trailers.

It's important to remember that there are different kinds of trailers which do different jobs. The gameplay one from E3 might have annoyed some people be appearing too action-y, but that's just what first gameplay trailers are like. Watching someone look through the stat/upgrade menus might be interesting for fans, but it doesn't make a great trailer, and apart from that kind of stuff and the story, only the action is left. I think we'll see some different trailers with different focuses in the future.

My guess is that they don't want to really showcase the story too much because if they do, they could potentially give away some major spoilers. Just what I think.

I'm pretty sure that IS what's gonna happen. Earth gets wrecked by the Reapers, Shepard escapes, assembles a galactic armada, then goes back to Earth to kick some Reaper ass, or they destroy everything.

The game comes out in march 2012, what do you expect? Their heavy marketing trailers and such will be released first near that date.

And is the marketing really that important? If you're that big of a fan, then you already know if you're getting the game or not by now.

If you'll remember, they, the bioware people, said from the very start, they screw up a bit with ME2, and accdently dropped alot of spoilers for the game in the adverts for it. They did NOT want to do that again. The staker are even higher this time, the ending is what we ALL have been craving since the start. They said they'd keep a TIGHT lid on it for fear of spoilers. And they have. They accually said they'd be showcasing mainly the combat and gameplay stuff, because that's all they COULD showcas without possible spoiling the story.

So, bare with it. They aren't dumb enough to botch the ending... I've got faith in them... they haven't let me down YET...(I didn't play the DA stuff...)

My only complaint is that they have released 3 trailers and not a single side boob or bra shot anywhere, common Bioware the biggest decision of the ME games is who do I want to play sexy time with.
