My parents threatened to take away $20 from me every time I forget to do a chore . After they threatened this, I wanted to see if they have the ability to do such a thing, so I did a bit of research (Thank you Google) and found out it is perfectly legal for them to do this. Please tell me I am not the only one who find this moronic?

I don't get an allowance and I don't get any money from my parents ever, not even during my birthday or Christmas. All the money I have is earned by working at a grocery store in my town. In my opinion, they should have no right to do anything with my hard earned money, but I wouldn't have a huge problem with a law that allowed them to put it into an account that you could access at 18 (But they had no ability to withdraw from)

Edit: Everyone seems to be talking about my story in question. Can we please discuss the law itself?

That's what comes with being a minor. We all complain, but you just have to deal with it,

The fact that they bought you a luxury item, a computer, doesn't compell you to give them money? How about the electricity, water you use?
You may say that 'tis their duty to look after you.
Legally (here) 'tis their duty to give you a hot meal, a bed and pay for your education. That's it. My parents are a bit more friendly, therefore whenever there are problems I just get down on my knees and take it like a big boy, because there's nothing I can do about it.

My allowance was put this way, "I allow you to live."

As I got older they did start having me pay for things if I didn't do certain stuff, and I'm sure if I were to move back in with them now I would be paying rent.

They're your parents. Their house, their rules. Your a minor, and not an adult, so you must follow these rules.

That is life.

Just be glad its not the olden times where they would instead beat you if you didn't do as your told.

Easy guys... I still remember how entitled I felt when I was a minor.

You're feeling entitled, and I promise, you're not. It wasn't that long ago that any work you got would have been to support the household, and you would not have seen a penny of it. In fact, in many homes, it's still this way. I went to school with plenty of kids that had to work every day after school and give the money all to their parents just to help pay for rent, or food.

If they actually asked me to pay a rent fee that included food, water, electricity, I would be less pissed about it. Its the fact that just because I am a minor they can legally take every cent I have earned is what pisses me off.

P.S. I paid for my computer, and I built theirs.

Simple solution. Withdraw all your money and place it into a bank account that they do not have their names attached to. Give specific instructions that you are the only one allowed to access the account. That will solve your problem as any attempt for them to withdraw the money from that account is a crime regardless of whether or not they are your parents.

I don't think wanting to keep money that I earned is entitlement >.> And as I said in an earlier post, if they asked to pay for rent and food etc I would. Its the fact that they can take away all my money that annoys me.

Basically, until you turn 18 and move out the rule is; that theirs is theirs and what yours is also theirs. The only cure for this is emancipation.

Also, it is not rent. It is parents being overbearing and lazy.

How many people on here are lawyers? No, OK, so stop pretending like you know the law. Just because people are minors does not mean that they have no rights, especially to money earned, inherited or given through settlement.

I do not know the law in your state, so this is not legal advice, but I think you read some misleading sources. For a little better understanding of Louisiana law, read this: http://www.melcherslawfirm.com/articles/When_Minor_Child_Inherit.pdf. It's about inheritance and trust accounts, but will give you a good idea where the law stands on this issue (at least in that state).

Sorry I couldn't be more specific to your state, but honestly unless it's Maryland I really can't give you any more detail than that anyway.

Also keep in mind that, with the recent developments in how we as a society treat spankings and other forms of physical punishment, the options that parents have to punish have really started to be limited.

Rest assured that your parents are not trying to take advantage of you, no matter how much it might seem that way. There are MUCH easier ways for them to obtain 20 bucks... they are attempting to get through to you using something that matters to you. Something that you had to work for, so that maybe you'll understand the extra work you are causing them by not doing chore X.

Much better than, say, confining you to your room where you can mostly do what you want to anyway. Also prepares you for the real world, where the cost of doing things wrong (being late on your rent, for example) boils down to paying a fine.

If it stings, well... that means it's working.

While your parents have a right to do this, it appears that they don't have much experience in social relations. Instead of just going "I'm going to forcibly take your money away if you don't follow my orders," they could have easily explained that you need to contribute to maintaining the household either by doing chores or paying money.

Still, they do provide for all your needs. It's just that negative reinforcement is a really lame way to get people to do what you want.

What chores are these anyway? If it's just taking out the trash, just do it :\

It was more of a joke. Like how people go "in the olden times of 2007...". That type of thing.
