How many people on here are lawyers? No, OK, so stop pretending like you know the law. Just because people are minors does not mean that they have no rights, especially to money earned, inherited or given through settlement.

I do not know the law in your state, so this is not legal advice, but I think you read some misleading sources. For a little better understanding of Louisiana law, read this: http://www.melcherslawfirm.com/articles/When_Minor_Child_Inherit.pdf. It's about inheritance and trust accounts, but will give you a good idea where the law stands on this issue (at least in that state).

Sorry I couldn't be more specific to your state, but honestly unless it's Maryland I really can't give you any more detail than that anyway.
I live in America's hat, but I will read the article anyway and try to find similar laws for my province. Thank you.

hehe, they made a mistake. A BIG ONE. What they did was incentivized you to not have any money. They should have incentivized you actually doing the chores, by paying you or giving you things for completing them.

Easy solution: make sure you have no money they can take from you.

While your parents have a right to do this, it appears that they don't have much experience in social relations. Instead of just going "I'm going to forcibly take your money away if you don't follow my orders," they could have easily explained that you need to contribute to maintaining the household either by doing chores or paying money.

Still, they do provide for all your needs. It's just that negative reinforcement is a really lame way to get people to do what you want.

What chores are these anyway? If it's just taking out the trash, just do it :\
I'm just a horribly forgetful person. I would need to write the dates of tests on my forehead if I wanted to remember them. Somehow I still maintain a 87% average in school.

No wonder people think we teens are so apethetic... :S

Damn, I would fuck shit up if my parents did that.

I feel your pain man, what I would do is steal it the fuck back.
But that's just my opinion.

No, he's saying it's stupid that his parents take his money (that he earned) if he doesn't do chore's around the house.

He's saying its stupid they can legally take money he's earned through a job.

Which I agree on him with. Its his, just because he's a douchebag when it comes the the chores (sorry if you aren't, its a point) shouldn't instantly mean they can go "right, lets take away your money".

They should try something else, like taking the power cord from his computer.

Did you read the second paragraph? I'm saying that my parents have the legal right to take away all the money that I earn at my job that has nothing to do with them. I am never given money from them, so everything they could take away is money I have earned separate of them.

Yeah the law doesn't really work because these days '18' means nothing, you can still have no job, be a lazy bum living at home with your mum and be 23 - THOSE are the kind of people you don't let get control of their money, they'll spent it on tf2 hats and/or WoW.

If you've got your own job it should be YOUR money - you've got a lot further than a lot of the useless mass of humanity these days! and sure they can charge you rent fair enough, but not every time you 'forget' to be their slave and do their work for them.

Well you do cost them about $200,000 over 18 years of something like that.

Can't you just create a bank account?

I do have all my money in a bank account.

Your parents (Or guardians) name have to be on the account if you are not 18, meaning they can withdraw money from your account.

They're your parents. Their house, their rules. Your a minor, and not an adult, so you must follow these rules.

That is life.

Just be glad its not the olden times where they would instead beat you if you didn't do as your told.
what do you mean "olden times"? when i was growing up, if dad brought out the thick learther belt, there was a beaten going to be had by someone. nothing too sevier, but a few times, both me and my bro walked funny the next day :/ we did kinda deserve it though XD
It was more of a joke. Like how people go "in the olden times of 2007...". That type of thing.
haha XD yeah i always did chuckle when people go "it was back in 2006! so far awayyyyyy :O"

It's not even remotely unusual for a bank to refuse bank accounts to minors unless it's a joint account.
