They shouldn't be allowed to take AWAY your money, but if you're a minor they have rights to restrict the amount you earn. Yeah, not being 18 sucks. But don't worry: being a legal adult sucks even more! =D

I'm just a horribly forgetful person. I would need to write the dates of tests on my forehead if I wanted to remember them. Somehow I still maintain a 87% average in school.
Kay, honest question then, how does writing on your forehead remind you of anything? I don't know about you but... I can't see my own forehead without a mirror >.>
It's just a saying ^^ I could probably come up with something that makes more sense if I tried I suppose.

You could always get emancipated if you have problems with them owning your possessions and your responsibilities.

Well you do cost them about $200,000 over 18 years of something like that.

Can't you just create a bank account?
I do have all my money in a bank account.

Your parents (Or guardians) name have to be on the account if you are not 18, meaning they can withdraw money from your account.
Make a paypal account and transfer all of your money to that. I'm pretty sure you can get a paypal debit card too...

It's not even remotely unusual for a bank to refuse bank accounts to minors unless it's a joint account.
I have one and I'm under 18.

You have to be at least 18 for that as well. And when you're dealing with serious accounting and real money, this is really not something you want to fuck around with. In some places, the only easy way to legally obtain a bank account before 18 is basically to get emancipated.

While your parents have a right to do this, it appears that they don't have much experience in social relations. Instead of just going "I'm going to forcibly take your money away if you don't follow my orders," they could have easily explained that you need to contribute to maintaining the household either by doing chores or paying money.

Still, they do provide for all your needs. It's just that negative reinforcement is a really lame way to get people to do what you want.

What chores are these anyway? If it's just taking out the trash, just do it :\

Hmm, maybe your parents are trying to use negative reinforcement because they feel it's the only way to fix your memory problem. Don't be too quick to judge them; they do voluntarily house and feed you, after all. And provide you with a computer, apparently.

Are you on the computer a lot (especially when you ought to be doing chores)? You could probably find some kind of software that gives you daily reminders.

If you work for your money then it's yours and, no matter what the law says, they cannot take your money away from you. All you need to do is say that they aren't going to and hide it, maybe keep it on you at all times or put it in the bank, they can't get to it that way. If you roll over and let them treat you in such a shitty way then you deserve to have it all taken off you.

Of course, you could just do the chores and not worry about this.

There's always murder in their sleep.

Seriously, take a look into emancipation and moving out. I suspect they'll change their tune once it's clear you find the situation unlivable.

And if they don't, it's an abusive situation. You need to get out of there.

In the meantime, also consider looking up the child protective services branch of your local municipal government.

Good luck. Those kinds of situations suck.

You also have to be 18 to enter porn sites but we all know that the internet just takes your word for it. As for serious money, I doubt he's rolling in cash. He works at a grocery story.

Personally, I've had a PayPal account since I was 14

Were you aware that they have the right to collect all your money and all the money of their children? They also have to declare your earnings as theirs, meaning you earning money will have them pay higher taxes. As long as you live under their charge, it's acceptable.

Also, I'd like to applaud your parents for actually punishing you in a way you'll learn a lesson. You can't beat the system, deal with it. Or do your chores and stop complaining to the internet about it like you're a martyr.

Their house, their rules, if you don't like it, just walk out the door and take care of yourself.

My question though, is how bad of a relationship do you have with your parents that you're actually looking into laws about the leverage between you, and to what end? Would you sue your parents while living in their house to have a PS3 back because you didn't want to do chores? That seems pretty damned petty to me, and for your sake I hope it was just your curiosity that drove you to study the laws surrounding the situation.

*sigh*

And this is why I fully acknowledge that I'm a corporate sell out. There are very good reasons to restrict user membership to 18+ when you're talking about a major transaction site and money. And there are legitimate legal reasons to not risk it.

Also, claiming that just because he works at a grocery store means he can't have a lot of money is absolute ridiculous. 1st off, even if he only has $500, that's not exactly a small sum, and it'd be not-difficult for him to have a couple thousand in there if he works a lot and saves a lot.

Your parents are pretty terrible. But were not getting their side of the story either. So.

You're a minor... you have no rights. EHHH!

I think its kind of sad your parents don't give you money during holidays or anything. I hope you actually get gifts or it must be sad at your house during Christmas. Your parents can dow hat they like to you until you're out of the house and although ity seem a little extreme to start charging you really just do the damn chores and it won't be an issue.

I wasn't saying there's no good reason to restrict membership. I'm perfectly aware of why a business would want to keep minors out and agree that it is for good reasons. As for risk, I think I'd be willing to give it a go if my other option is to have my hard earned money taken from me because I forgot to wipe my ass as his parents seem to be doing.

As for him not having a lot of money, I'll concede that point. Maybe I'm just projecting. When I was 16 the only saving I did was long enough to make a big ticket purchase that I'd been wanting and then I went back to blowing it.

From a legal standpoint, your parents own you and everything you earn until you hit the age of majority. It's a remnant from the past, when children were literally property of their parents.

Personally, I'm of two minds on the concept. On one hand, it encourages parental abuse and allows things like what Gary Coleman's parents did to him. On the other hand, it discourages children from trying to 'grow up too fast'. I just feel like kids should be worried about being kids, not trying to make money or whatever. You do that plenty later in life.

All that said, I see no problems in this particular case. They are requesting that you pitch in around the house, and are punishing you for disobedience in a way that clearly upsets you. It's a perfectly valid thing to do.
