I don't have live, simply because I don't have my 360 connected to the internet.

But if I did, I would. It annoys me that I can't get any of the DLC for Fable 2 or Halo 3.

You can get those without gold.

Imagine if you had to pay for PSN.
You won't have to imagine for much longer. Sony said way back when that eventually, there would be a subscription price for it, just that they'd keep it off as long as advertising dollars kept PSN in the black.

Well, as of January, PSN is now operating in the red. We've been asked to roll out a demo of our code for charging credit cards for subscriptions to PSN (I work for First Data and Visa). Not sure when it's going to happen, but I'm pretty sure at this point that it is going to happen sooner than later.
Evidence?
He works for one of the companies involved a deal which I assume from context has not been finalized. I doubt he can give you evidence without breaking some contract or another.
So no evidence other than his word? This sucks, I wanted to see how this one was going down.

Taken right off xbox.com.

"Welcome to the future of gaming and online entertainment. As a new Xbox LIVE® Gold member, you will enjoy access to demos, trailers, downloads, tournaments, friends, and your gamertag, your unique digital identity."

But in reality, online multiplayer is the only thing you'll get. The demos, trailers, most downloads, gamertag, and friends come with silver.

Its 5 bucks a month for premium service, I know Microsoft already has plenty of money, but its great service for $5.

The problem is not that the 360 has a more reliable service then PS3 or Wii. My problem is that PC gaming has been offering free, quality online service for years. The fact that Microsoft wants us to pay for something that smaller companies can provide for free is sickening. Plus they charge for DLC that PC users get for free, and the new dashboard is all ads except the MyXbox row. They are simply taking advantage of a console online monopoly.
I think that sums it up perfectly. The cost is pretty low, and the service is pretty good. The problem IS exactly this though. It's just MS's way of getting $1 from everyone in the world. Not much money from the individual, but a massive amount to MS.

Well, I don't really need it then, do I?

I mean, I do play the multiplayer a lot in Halo 3, but usually using splitscreen/system link with my friends. It's pretty much the same thing, except without the childish whining.

I don't mind paying but i believe that MS should subsidise the cost of games like halo, orange box, Burnout Paradise etc. Because those games force you to buy a membership. I used a one year membership pretty much exclusively on COD4 so it was like paying for the game twice.

I was fine with it until I realized that all of the game servers are actually player-hosted, then it got me thinking; What the fuck I was paying for?... it's certainly not quality local servers... getting demos and DLC a week earlier than everyone else? That's... the only benefit I can think of off the top of my head for justifying $50AU+ for three months of online. The only times I buy cards is if there's a really decent MP game that has just been released (ie. SFIV).

If this happened for the PC where EVERY SINGLE GAME required a monthly online subscription to play online there would be a gaming revolt. In fact you could guarantee that the industry would crash (again), which is why I don't understand why people are so happy to lay out money for something that's been free for so long. Maybe this new generation of gamers just don't understand how bad they're getting it?

Considering how good xboxlive is relative to the other consoles services, and how much fun I've had online. Yes. I'm happy to pay.

I kept getting red rings (4 freaking times in a row) I sent them in, they sent me "new ones" "refurbished ones" the whole pile, so i just gave up and asked for my money back

BUT lets say I never gave up on it, I would probably pay for the online stuff

I don't have wireless Internet, so the PS3 doesn't get plugged

Not happy at all, being a PC, PS3, 360, Wii (a little) gamer its a complete rip off, and a rip off that is going to cost developers one less game a year on 360 because i wont have any sodding cash ¬_¬.
Maybe you don't have the cash because of the fact that you have a PC, PS3, 360, and Wii.
Really now, four dollars a month is practically nothing.
To be honest i only bought the consoles and their games when i was still employed and earning like £40 a day - which is why i know the yearly charge isnt a lot, but its still £40 being taken away from me year on year which i dont think microsoft deserve in the slightest. It doesnt matter the amount, its a matter of principle, which is why my gaming money is going to sony unless i have a real good reason to do otherwise.

It's a good service but I think that it should lock kids out of games like halo till they actually reach the age limit, and if their voice reaches a certain pitch they should get kicked off. Other than the whiny kids I don't mind paying for it.
