So if non-magic using people in the HP universe were called Cara'sin instead of Muggles, maybe I wouldn't be posting this on the net, but as it is, Muggles is a word that forces me to accept the fact that I'm reading a book written for an 8 year old even though the later novels grow with the audience.
If non-magic people were called Cara'sin it would make no sense. Why? Because the wizards speak English, not Thalassian! Muggle seems to be an almost slang or condensed word. The fact they non-magical humans are referred to as Muggles does not force you to accept anything other than it's one particular word for non-magic users. American wizards might have a different word for non-magical beings for all we know.

Oh yeah, we're real cute.

Nah, it's the internet, that's pretty damn tame.
Well, thank goodness for 'English' vocabulary, in that case. 'Rather' disturbing, as opposed to 'very' disturbing. Still, that's quite true, I've read much worse stuff on these forums at that...

Oh, and how remiss of me: welcome to Esc's OTD.

Dude, have you ever even heard of the: "Great Big Book of British Smiles"?

No offense to anyone, that episode of the Simpsons just came to me.

I'm kind of missing what you're setting out here.

I know quite a few of the dapper Brit fellows, always found them a tad on the sexy side, personally, but I've never quite caught the 'cute naming' vibe.

What. Cute? That word is not even in our dictionary, if anyone's perceiving it as cute then it's you.

Mary titty-fucking christ are you far from the truth. As you say you like british humour you must realise that it is very dark, dry and cynical, the best examples being franky boyle and john dee.
Holy shit, you can't be Catholic! And I'm fairly sure his name's 'James Dee'.

You bring up an incontestable point, Bloodthirsters are the cutest thing in existence! Perhaps second to a cute little horde of Nurglings.

You know, their daemonic name is Khan'gurani'i, I think the OP might actually be right! That is a really cutesy name!
It's actually rather disturbing that I genuinely find Nurglings... cute... and I perpetually refer to Nurgle as 'Grandpappy Nurgle'.
The comedian's name is Jack Dee

What the fuck are you talking about?
Maybe you've confused us with the fucking care bears or something?
Seriously, no one here as a clue what you are talking about.
Hell, i'm now tempted to set up a thread intilted- 'Anyone else hate American ignorance?' based off one person.
I was right there with you up until that last sentence. Then I was like :< because I'm an American.
You just failed to grasp a British Comedy staple named 'irony'. Allow me to spell it out for you:

He refuted the entire argument of the OP by satirically pointing out he was judging our entire culture by a single children's book, clearly the only thing of our modern culture his intellect could grasp.

Topic: Entire British Culture being cute
Source: Single Children's Fantasy Book Series

Counter

Topic: Entire American Population Ignorant
Source: Single ignorant American
Don't forget the irony of an American showing their ignorance by falling into the trap of an ironic statement about Americans being ignorant. Double whammy

Dude, if your going to troll England properly then you have to make a joke about their terrible food, poor dental hygiene, and their sad attempts at humor only them and their relatives across the sea laugh at.

If your gonna troll, do it right. FOR AMERICA!

Read it carefully, i'm not having a go at Americans, but just his method of british cuteness.
He decided to genralize a whole nation over one word in one authors book, so i made that point just to show how unfair it was.
Honestly, Americans... so ignorant... :p
Right guy I know your being ironic, fnaw fnaw fnaw, and all that but I actually do understand what hes talking about. Hes refering to the way all of our folklore sort of sounds "random in a simple sort of way". Like Brownies, Boggarts and Red Caps.
I always thought it was cute the way Red Caps kept their Caps Red by dipping them in the blood of murdered children.
I swear to God, is the Bing virus going around or something. As I said in my first big post, just because it sounds cute doesnt mean it is, ESPECIALLY when it concerns folklore. You know what a Red Cap is so chances are you know a couple of others and realise that their mostly boogie men which dont tend to have the "cutest" reputations.
To be honest I dont really agree with the OP. I hate it when writers just slap stuff with words that have no basis like "the spear of vol'kinarish", its just lazy. British folklore on the other hand sound weird for a reason, like the word Flibbergibbet... huhuhuh.

My husband and I have been debating the America/UK paradox for awhile now. Here are our key examples:
*According to "Bones" no crime in America should ever go unsolved and according to "Waking the Dead" no crime in the UK should ever get solved.
*American soap opera characters are rich and beautiful, UK characters are poverty stricken and, um, for the most part not beautiful.
*Based on US movies 99% of the population is drop dead gorgeous (clearly not true) and basing on UK movies less than 1% of the population is even attractive.
Okay, so these are slight exaggerations, but only slight.
My theory for this is that in America the idea is that the populace will want to strive to be like the rich/beautiful characters, whereas the in the UK the populace is thinking "At least someone has it worse than I do."

OT: I would never associate the UK with "cuteness". There is a lot of over the top silliness (especially in the 80s-90s sitcoms), but not cute.
Yeah, I absolutely agree with you here.

I think its because the yanks are just more culturally geared towards hope, or (in my opinion) they don't get it knocked out of them in the same way. The culture seems to be that no matter what people can succeed no matter how much they fail. Over hear, its kinda the opposite. You are either destined to succeed from the get go, or anything beyond that isn't really worth the effort.

In terms of aspirations (and by connection total lies) as a core part of the idea Skins is about the only thing on TV which even bothers trying (Also, skins is terrible, and if you like it you're a terrible person)... it offered a completely unrealistic aspiration for a lot of teenagers but who already had a certain degree of received opinion that the cool kids DO live like that. I even did have the kinda of teenage life that involved a lot of drink, a lot of drugs and reasonable amount of moderately priced love and even I think that Skins is utterly detached from reality. Anyway. I digress. Skins is about the only thing on TV that is telling you that you are not cool enough, but tells you that you should be. It is also a perfect example of why youth oriented programming has lost its way.

Basically we don't know really what aspirational tv is. We think that everything needs to be in some way gritty and depressing, and needs to show commitment to representing poor, ugly people.

and used ONE person(whatever that oul yoke who writes harry f***ing potter is called)
and ONE WORD as your reason?
can I just second the WHAAAAAAAA? ness :)
lol you made me laugh though,in a bewildered kind of fashion...so that's good

The British don't make things cute, they make them silly. Than an officer has to tell them to stop being silly, observe.

Cute, eh?

Trainspotting, The Third Man, Secrets & Lies, Brief Encounter, Hope and Glory, Kes, Brighton Rock, The Full Monty, The Crying Game, Withnail & I, Zulu, Gandhi, The Italian Job, The Wicker Man, My Beautiful Laundrette, Mona Lisa, Peeping Tom, A Clockwork Orange, The Killing Fields. And that's just the MOVIES... (that I could come up with off the top of my head)

Yeah, all our media output is REALLY cute.
