Anyone else hate British cuteness?

So if non-magic using people in the HP universe were called Cara'sin instead of Muggles, maybe I wouldn't be posting this on the net, but as it is, Muggles is a word that forces me to accept the fact that I'm reading a book written for an 8 year old even though the later novels grow with the audience.

If non-magic people were called Cara'sin it would make no sense. Why? Because the wizards speak English, not Thalassian! Muggle seems to be an almost slang or condensed word. The fact they non-magical humans are referred to as Muggles does not force you to accept anything other than it's one particular word for non-magic users. American wizards might have a different word for non-magical beings for all we know.

Oh yeah, we're real cute.

He decided to genralize a whole nation over one word in one authors book, so i made that point just to show how unfair it was.

Right guy I know your being ironic, fnaw fnaw fnaw, and all that but I actually do understand what hes talking about. Hes refering to the way all of our folklore sort of sounds "random in a simple sort of way". Like Brownies, Boggarts and Red Caps.

I always thought it was cute the way Red Caps kept their Caps Red by dipping them in the blood of murdered children.

I swear to God, is the Bing virus going around or something. As I said in my first big post, just because it sounds cute doesnt mean it is, ESPECIALLY when it concerns folklore. You know what a Red Cap is so chances are you know a couple of others and realise that their mostly boogie men which dont tend to have the "cutest" reputations.
To be honest I dont really agree with the OP. I hate it when writers just slap stuff with words that have no basis like "the spear of vol'kinarish", its just lazy. British folklore on the other hand sound weird for a reason, like the word Flibbergibbet... huhuhuh.

My husband and I have been debating the America/UK paradox for awhile now. Here are our key examples:
*According to "Bones" no crime in America should ever go unsolved and according to "Waking the Dead" no crime in the UK should ever get solved.
*American soap opera characters are rich and beautiful, UK characters are poverty stricken and, um, for the most part not beautiful.
*Based on US movies 99% of the population is drop dead gorgeous (clearly not true) and basing on UK movies less than 1% of the population is even attractive.
Okay, so these are slight exaggerations, but only slight.
My theory for this is that in America the idea is that the populace will want to strive to be like the rich/beautiful characters, whereas the in the UK the populace is thinking "At least someone has it worse than I do."

OT: I would never associate the UK with "cuteness". There is a lot of over the top silliness (especially in the 80s-90s sitcoms), but not cute.

I think its because the yanks are just more culturally geared towards hope, or (in my opinion) they don't get it knocked out of them in the same way. The culture seems to be that no matter what people can succeed no matter how much they fail. Over hear, its kinda the opposite. You are either destined to succeed from the get go, or anything beyond that isn't really worth the effort.

In terms of aspirations (and by connection total lies) as a core part of the idea Skins is about the only thing on TV which even bothers trying (Also, skins is terrible, and if you like it you're a terrible person)... it offered a completely unrealistic aspiration for a lot of teenagers but who already had a certain degree of received opinion that the cool kids DO live like that. I even did have the kinda of teenage life that involved a lot of drink, a lot of drugs and reasonable amount of moderately priced love and even I think that Skins is utterly detached from reality. Anyway. I digress. Skins is about the only thing on TV that is telling you that you are not cool enough, but tells you that you should be. It is also a perfect example of why youth oriented programming has lost its way.

Basically we don't know really what aspirational tv is. We think that everything needs to be in some way gritty and depressing, and needs to show commitment to representing poor, ugly people.
