Anyone else have this habit?

It might just be me in my infinite weirdness that does this but I'll ask anyway.

Is there anyone else here who turns off a game's sound as they're playing to listen to their own music? I'll give you an example. When I play wrestling games, most of the time I turn the in-game music off, and turn the in-game sound effects/commentary either off or down significantly, then put on my headphones and start listening to stuff that I have on my iTunes.

So yeah, anyone else do stuff like this?

Tried it once. I was very bored and decided to see what it would be like playing Burnout 3 while listening to a collection of AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Megadeth and Pantera, among others.

It was awesome.

It depends on the type of game. If I need to be able to hear what is coming at me from around the corner, no. However, if that is not the case, always.

In fact, I spent a good portion of my morning playing Mega Man while listening to Man...or Astro-Man?. They are an amazing Sci-fi themed Surf rock band and they fit perfectly with what I was playing.

Oh yeah, I like to match what I am playing to what I am listening to.

All the time to be honest, but then like Nimcha said, most of my games are very low on immersion. Especially the Mass Effect games, it's the only way to make planet-surveying interesting ¬_¬

I try to do the opposite a lot of the time, just for giggles. Mixing Super Paper Mario with Dragonforce creates not only a massive contrast, but it also damn near melted my face with awesome.

It's so much fun to do that. It depends on the game though, like if I was playing Sins of a Solar Empire I'd have a slower playlist. Maybe Newton Faulkner for the macromanagement and then Lamb of God for the epic space battles.

Now however, when I'm rushing through a dungeon on Torchlight the most obvious choice is 'Fuck You-Cee Lo Green'. Try it, it's hilarious. Works well for online shooters too, though TF2 doesn't need music to make it win.

Only if I'm playing online games, like Halo, or CoD. Then I press play all, and wait for one of my 70 albums on my xbox to load up.

I will listen to other music when playing games, but I never turn off the sound effects or music from the game. I at most turn down my TV a bit but that would be it.

This! I don't really find at all weird. Sound effects are boring, music is not.

Only with games that I don't need to pay attention to or have already finished. In fact, it's normally the opposite, I'll play some Arkham Asylum challenge maps or some Oblivion or Super Meat Boy when listening to podcasts or other audio shows. I find it's something to do. In games like Oblivion, sound is kind of unnecessary, for me, at least.

I do it every now and then, if I'm working on something painfully repetitive.

Can't do it very often though, for some reason I can't focus on a game without the reaction sound effects. I end up completely spacing out and dying in horrible ways.

If you can do the combo just right, with any music and any game, if you can find that sweet spot, it will feel like your high.

I got tired of talking to people on XBL, so now I just watch Netflix/ listen to a podcast/ listen to music.
I'll turn on the volume when the game tries to convey important info, though.

I often turn off the music altogether. BGMs tend to get repetitive.

I've created my own playlist for New Vegas and play that instead of the in game radio. Not because I don't like it, it's just that there is only about 6 songs playing on a loop.

After a while I start I get sick of most RPG background music (it seems to happen very quickly with Fallout and Elder Scrolls games). Then I put on my own stuff, but I don't turn off the ingame music entirely. Just turn it all the way down.
