Oh, almost all the time I'll have music on in the background and turn off the game's soundtrack... the only exceptions I can think of at the moment are F-Zero X and Jet Set Radio.

Nope, never. I feel that a game's music and sound often add a lot to the experience. It can really make or break the atmosphere and really set the tone. For example, take Halo. Would saving humanity be just as epic without music like this:
Would, in Mass Effect 2, Shephard's speech at the final stand be just as rallying without this:
One can keep posting like that for hours. Same goes for environmental sounds, they tell you a lot about where you are, what's going on. I couldn't imagine turning them off.

That is, if they're good. If they're rather crappy, but the rest of the game is fun, sure. But I have yet to encounter such a game. That also said, sometimes I do add something if the game doesn't provide it already. Plenty of multiplayer games who lack music, so I just put on my own.

Only with games that don't really require any immersion. Like WoW. :p
Woah...woah...what?! The main reason why WoW's one of my favourite games is exactly how much it immerses me. The sound, especially the absolutely amazing music, plays a humongous part in that. But there's also the warm, versatile art style, the perfect environmental sounds and those little touches that make a zone really come alive; grizzly bears fishing in Grizzly Hills, the sand blowing over the dunes in Uldum, vines even creeping over the little flowers in Duskwood, NPC's going about their daily routines. I would never ever have played it so long if not for my longing to discover yet another jewel, hence why I usually stop playing when I run out of content.

But the music...oh good gods the music, that's really the crown on their work. I never ever understood why people just turned that off altogether.

The only game I've done this in was Gears of War 2.

I simply felt that I needed this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiaOFOMPOBc] playing during horde.
Made even better with something like this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dok4wJ4pqo0], this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDZ4N7QyKFQ&feature=related] or this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwyQ2mRa21s]. Carnage has never been so soothing. Or hilariously disturbing.

Yeah, sometimes I listen to my own music, especially with beat-em-ups and wrestling games. Once you know the tricks, you don't need the sound. But with other games, such as Asssasin's Creed, it's quite important to know what is going on and sound is an important factor. Then with other games, like Metroid Prime, I actually really like the music so I choose to listen to it.

In Multiplayer, yes. No sound from the game, I take my glasses off so I have trouble seeing what's going on, epic music blasting from my headphones/speakers. And I kick a lot of ass. Apparently, not knowing what the fuck you are doing instantly makes you very good at doing it.

Tried it once. I was very bored and decided to see what it would be like playing Burnout 3 while listening to a collection of AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Megadeth and Pantera, among others.

It was awesome.
hellz yeah. That would shit all over the average as hell soundtrack of Burnout 3. It was the only weakness is an otherwise godly game.

OT: I once changed all the battle music in Oblivion to songs like 'Eye of the Tiger' and Final Countdown'. It was hilarious. :D

I used to always do that in CoD 4 where footsteps weren't everything - ahh the number of times my team told me to stop singing with my scottish accent...nostalgia

I occassionally play music now if it's a game I've already done the story too/don't need sound to do well

Also try left 4 dead with only your music playing - you get really into a song and ohmygodatank!!!

l4d2. I was playing single player and the horde was coming and I immediately put on the L4d2 intro song.

It was Awesome

also on metal gear solid(every one)I'll put on the song "encounter"(the song you hear when the alert phase is on in mgs1) even when I'm not in alert because it's so badass.

I listen to music on games where I don't really need sound, like CS:S, as I mostly play mods on it.

Depends, if it's my first time through a game/area I'll leave the sound on, but after once or twice I'll usually mute it and listen to my own. I've also found that if I'm having trouble on a boss fight, if I turn off the sound I do better.

Nope, never. I like to feel as immeresed as possible, even if the game isn't immersive. Also, I like some of the repetitive 8-bit style loops out there.

Yeah I do this all the time or used to at least. I would play it through the XBOX from my laptop but it started having issues where it would just break up and stop playing. Now I have to play music through my laptop which is no where near as good.

If you've gotta fix, anyone, that'd be swell.

I used to do this back in the SNES days when you had no voices to listen to, only text to read. Now I have two TVs next to each other, one hooked up to the cable and one hooked up to my systems. Though playing through a game where you actually want to pay attention to the script makes it hard to watch a show at the same time when you want to pay attention to that too. I try to play games that don't require my full concentration at those times like online multi or the Lego games or most of the XBLA games. These days my music is played 99% of the time during drive times.

When I inevitably grew tired of an MMO's swing weapon/monster death sounds and was no longer able to hear background music without thinking about it, I'd mute the sound and substitute Black Sabbath damn near every time. I don't think it gets better than Metal for endlessly killing things and stealing organs that may or may not exist.

Minecraft and Black Ops for me. Minecraft's music gets just a bit repetitive after long hours and with black ops, a good beat keeps my concentration going and I don't drift into tunnel-vision.
