i do it when the in game music/sound isn't vital to the game, as in, no dialogues, good muzak, shit like that. Immersion can fuck off, if you need hi-fi shit to feel immersed, you're just playing a bad game since it relies on such superficial gimmick

I like playing music with Left 4 Dead. Linkin Park is always fun to hear while you're mowing down zombies.

Only with WoW. I don't really know why, but with WoW I can shift between game music and playing my music, however with other MMOs and games I gotta listen to the game music.

I only swap out soundtracks in large open world games, where you can go ages without dialogue or really requiring the sound. As much as I loved them, the next-gen Fallout games, Red Dead Redemption and Just Cause 2 are a few of the games that got lumped with a new soundtrack consisting of various podcasts and various albums from my iPod... I'M SORRY SOUND ENGINEERS!

I do it all the time in fighting games and shooters. But with any other games I'll only do it on challenge modes or during a second playthrough.

Woah...woah...what?! The main reason why WoW's one of my favourite games is exactly how much it immerses me. The sound, especially the absolutely amazing music, plays a humongous part in that. But there's also the warm, versatile art style, the perfect environmental sounds and those little touches that make a zone really come alive; grizzly bears fishing in Grizzly Hills, the sand blowing over the dunes in Uldum, vines even creeping over the little flowers in Duskwood, NPC's going about their daily routines. I would never ever have played it so long if not for my longing to discover yet another jewel, hence why I usually stop playing when I run out of content.

But the music...oh good gods the music, that's really the crown on their work. I never ever understood why people just turned that off altogether.
Because once you're done levelling you only spend time in a few selected zones of which the repetitive music gets on your nerves very quickly.

I usually do it with Just Cause 2, since I can't stand the in-game music. I might also do it in Halo: Reach when playing online to get me in the mood.

I do this all the time. Unless the games own soundtrack is that great, I'll have music on the background. I can't play Morrowind without Suburban Tribe on the playlist. For quite a bit of other games OCRemixes are damn nice.

If it is a multiplayer game where I need to concentrate, then I will not listen to music, most other times I will unless there is important dialogue to be heard etc.
