Try making a $300 gaming PC that can run modern BFBC:2 with good graphics and a 50+ frame rate. The graphics card processor needed for just THAT, would run you around $280, unless you are playing on a VERY small moniter.
$300? Is this some take on consoles, their price and performance?
You do know that for much of their product lifespan consoles are sold at below cost? That the manufacturers recoup that loss and make their profits from licencing out the right to develope/publish games for their proprietary system? That's why consoles themselves are cheap but their games are on average more expensive than PC games. It's a Loss Leader sales model.
It dose not help that the PC is getting less and less qaulity A+ to AAA games, while the consoles get all the B level crap (most games rated 8+) and then some. The again gaming has become a mindless medium with either games try not to be a game with limited interaction(heavy rain) or be so watered down you wonder whos playing this drivel at full price (ME2,DA2).
Gameing has become almost as complicated as holyywoods scope of action films, rarely good, mostly bad some bad but good but most are just rancid wank by and for crack addicts(suits making the game and the zombie gamers who won't stop and think before they buy).
PS:No I am not a jaded curmudgeon....
PSS:I don't think PC gaming would be much better off if all multi platform games were decently ported to the PC, the core problem is alot less qaulity alot more generic stuff that tries to hard to make money by being generic...
Yes I used to think PC gaming was superior to console. Then I grew up beyond the age of 12.
Used to think FPS on console was a joke but now I play majority of FPS on console and have used my PC for gaming less and less. Mouse is still superior yes but at least with a controller I can just lay back on my bed and chill.
My gaming laptop and PS3 compliment each other, they do not scream to me for individual attention out of some superority complex. They both do their intended jobs well.
Ofcourse some games are dumbed down for console and I think alot of PC gamers wouldn't care so much if it didn't effect the PC release. But what we often seen in multiplatformers is that the game is developed first for console then ported over to PC with little or nothing changed to take advantage of the PC's abilitites.
Think of Bio-Shock. I played this on PC and it was good but it obviously felt like an X-box game and the experience was somewhat cheapended and compromised (in terms of interface & gameplay) considering I was sitting at my desk on a new shiny PC.
Not saying PC is better (I prefer my PS3 these days remember) just pointing out something valid to the argument.
Surely some instances where a pc game has been ported to console and not taken advantage of the consoles particular abilities.
I take no sides, especially since I play my PC and my PS3 about equally in frequency-- I find they both have pros and cons.
HOWEVER, I just have to say that I personally believe that RTS games are best played with a mouse, just because it's easier to control. Each and every other game genre I think are equal on both consoles and PC though.
Oh yes. A game being "dumbed down" according to hardcore PC fans usually means it's being made more fluid and user-friendly for us normal people. That's why I don't agree with the hate Dragon Age 2 is gathering from PC fanboys. It isn't being dumbed down, it's being made a hell of a lot less clunky.
Yes but 'more fluid and user-friendly' often involves stripping out gameplay options and/or features, which if you're used to them can make the game feel somehow lesser in comparison to previous titles.
It's a bit dismaying to frequently find games only having 2/3s of the options and features (or 'clunk', if you prefer) of their predecessors if those are things you enjoy. For example, if you're into RPGs these days it's getting hard to find RPGs that aren't 'action-RPGs'... sure they can be fun and engaging but they lack the complexity I enjoy in RPGs.

And I'm sure it's quite lovely for the casual RPG fans to not only have all the action-RPG titles but also getting previously 'hardcore' RPG franchises turned into action-RPGs.
When the RPG genre disappears up it's own arse in a cloud of unoriginal sameness at least I'll know I wasn't at fault... which will be no comfort but you get that at times.

Believe me, hardcore RPGs aren't going anywhere. So long as the PC remains a viable gaming platform, there will still be plenty of murderously complex RPGs for the hardcore fans to play to their hearts' content. I think it goes in a sinusoidal curve, so after the wave of action-RPGs gets too large and even the casual fans start making threads about how the action-RPG is so samey and overdone, then we'll see a return to the hardcore style.

Yeah, I really think consoles are causing PC games problems (note to self: sarcasm sucks over the net)
Lets knock these out ...
Pro's ...
Yay, graphics! 'cos I am a Magpie...
You can aim better? So what? In PC vs 360 ('cos that is most likley to happen) mouse would OWN the 360 pad from one end of the map to the other and back ... how often does mouse VS pad happen? Not very so it doesn't matter.
Never even had the desire to mod a game in my life. (yes, this one is just opinion so I will go halfsies on you with this one). Customisability = mods .. stop trying to +1 the pro pile ...
Music while playing games is distracting, doing anything else besides game is distracting. 360 lets you play your own music over the games (if I remember right), PS3 is kind of screwed in this one but I don't play music while gaming anyway, so it doesn't bother me. (I could always play it through my Ipod thingy anyway)
Dedicated servers? What did MW2 not have that pissed you guys off but the consoles did ... I forget.
Water vapour? I don't follow this one. If you mean you can download games PSN and XBL, I am not up to date with all the steam features so ...
Cons ...
Who needs top end stuff all the time? 6 months later your £300 graphics card is out of date. I doubt many people in the world always have top of the range stuff all the time.
Relates to number 1 I feel.
Controls I can kind of get, I can get lucky sometimes and type without looking but controls more complicated than wasd to move, space to jump, shift to crouch, R to reload, right click to aim, scroll to change weapon and left click to fire and I am boned. I have to start looking at the keyboard, which is a no no.
I assume this means "can my PC run it" which is one of my main gripe with PC's, constantly having to check if you can run it and upgrading if you can't. That £10 cheaper PC game just became £40 or £50 more 'cos you now have to buy a new PC part.
LANing. I watched the day[9] daily 100, if you have not seen that go do it! Seriously, it just awesome to watch, it's like an hour long movie that touches you.
Anyway, in it he talks about LAN parties and him and his friends would go to each others houses and LAN and it sounded like hard work! Unplugging all your stuff, hauling it over to a mates house, hooking it all back up, getting all the settings right etc etc etc for like one night of gaming ... just sounds like ALOT of work.
With a console it's buy a few pads and enjoy, on the PS3 I think it's 7 or 8 people can play on one machine (I don't know if a game can support that yet though).
My main gipe, the big mutha of all my gripes is problem solving on the PC! Dear god, I sometimes think PC's hate games ... for instance I have no idea how to make killing floor run on my PC, there is a thing that tells you how to change your ports and stuff on your router but it makes no sense!
It's not just about accuracy it's about speed.
Now tell me you'd be able to do ANYTHING I just did in that video? yes it DOES matter, ever been frustrated when an enemy shoots your back and you can't turn quick enough to kill him? with a mouse you can spin as quick as your wrist enables you to, and even quicker with more sensitivity.
This video actually covers many bases, this is a DEDICATED SERVER mod. That's the point of dedicated servers. What you say "MW2 had on consoles" is a useless type of dedicated server. Dedicated servers are hosted by people, normal people, and the server owner can change the server settings to whatever they want.
Once again, I MADE that map. I added it to a dedicated server, I changed the settings... and hey look! That knife and those guns aren't even the ones that came with the game! They're skinned! Mods are everywhere, I have played hundreds of them because they're fun as, mods and customisation of a game are different things. Customisation is inside the game, mods are separate products made using the engine.
I listen to music while playing some games, it depends if sound is that needed. Also I can Shift-Tab and browse the net (Steam overlay) when I'm dead and waiting for the round to end.

It's coming to PS3 though.
As for what you said for CONS:
The first two points I made as additions to the first guy's post.
I can touch type and NEVER EVER EVER look at the keyboard while playing a game unless I have silly commands bound to the numpad like "bind KP_HOME "Kill; say "I regret nothing"" or something moronic like that... or admin commands to ban or do silly things to people who are ruining my server.
You always have your hands on the keyboard, pinky on CTRL, thumb on space, middle 3 on w/s/a/d, e and r are not hard to find from there if you've played for over an hour. Also changing weapons using numbers, I have SW bound to jump so I can bunnyhop and do things that custom server gamemodes require.
personally my computer never has problems with compatibility, but I understand it's an issue for people that don't have a crazy computer like me.
yeah lanning is good and bad at the same time, like I said.
What you do is use the internet and look up your problem, things that run on steam generally just need to be re-verified to fix missing or corrupted files and a defrag of those files might help, both you can do from the steam library (right-click<Properties)
I've had a few issues in that regard but have fixed them within a few minutes using basic research.
If you don't think these pros affect you well don't play PC! But don't argue that PCs aren't better, because it's fact in certain areas. Consoles are only better for plug in and play and local multiplayer.
IM NOT THE ONLY ONE IN THIS ROOM AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
on topic:
The only way to really participate in the console wars is with money. Don't spend money (this requires that the producer of platform gets no money ex. I bought a used xbox360 & a used copy of crackdown, microsoft got no money from that) on the platforms that you don't think should win.
You can't win the console wars, but you can help the war effort.
