Anyone feel like forum activity really slowed down?

Nowadays these forums just feel so slow. Barely anything is going on aside from the constant "How dare you have a different view from me!" "conversations" that go on in Game Industry Discussion and Religion and Politics and on occasion the other forums. Overall it just feels like a ghost town around here. Threads take entire days to fill up a single page, saved by the fact that there's so little activity they get to stay on the front page, even the rage fueled Game Industry discussion thread that might as well be called Gamer gate discussion thread feels kinda slow, with just the same threads and the same people going back and forth in the same arguments that I used to take part it before I got tired of it (Even the latest freaking Zero Punctuation only has 22 comments, just above half a page). I couldn't tell you the number of times I started to write out a reply, stopped, thought "What's the point?" and deleted it all. Because all I would get out of it is a flooded inbox of replies and headaches because it would just be me replying to whoever quoted me in a conversation with lots of words that could be distilled down to "Nu-uh" "Yeah-huh" "Nu-uh" "Yeah-huh" "Nu-uh" "Yeah-huh". Even when I do manage to squeeze something out I wonder if it was really worth it.

I wonder if so many people feel the same way I do. If getting roped into the same argument for the umpeenth time has just lost its charm, because it feels REALLY quiet around here.

Am I onto something or am I overthinking things again? I do that a lot.

No, you're not overthinking it, and you're certainly not the first one to point this out. GG and several content contributors leaving this site removed quite a lot of traffic from these forums. I've been here for 6 years, and the forums are really only a fraction of what they once were. I remember a time when getting the first comment on a new ZP episode was considered something to be prized, and there were always 1-4 people who wrote "first" when the video was up and were instantly banned. When, if you didn't get replies in your thread withing half an hour, it would pass on to the second page.

The forums being all quiet these days doesn't bother me that much. The creation of Games Industry Discussion removed a lot of the sexism/Sarkeesian/pick your hot topic of today threads. The lower amount of traffic on the forums means that there's less "Grrr I hate MovieBob!" type threads or flat out insane posters like Zeel or EternalNothingness around. It also means there's less derailing of threads or people padding them out for pages on end by getting stuck in "Uh-huh!" "Nuh-uh!" arguments.

I don't know. I might actually prefer the quieter forums. I can't remember them being that much more interesting back when the traffic bustled around here, just look at my join date vs. my post count, and compare that to some others who have been here for way less time. Although I do miss the insanity of posters like EternalNothingness or Sung-Hwan, because each time they posted a new thread your perception of reality would be challenged.

I'm not necessarily going to speak of the reasons, but objectively, this forum has definitely slowed down a LOT.

When I first joined, pages 1 & 2 of Off-Topic would show the threads from the current day (because each page would only show about 12 hours worth of threads). Now however, page 1 of Off-Topic shows threads often going back TWO days (because each page shows, often times, more than 24 hours worth of threads).

Do this: Go here, turn off quote notifications, never look back, thank me later.

I get that the notifications are supposed to be helpful, but it seems in a lot of cases the notifications simply drag people back into arguments they'd rather not partake in.

Way back in my day it was more active (Been here almost 6 years), however I leave and return every now and then so I don't notice much, but yeah, I kinda feel like making topics to move things a bit but I know I won't reply, not because I don't read any of the responses, it's just that I never know what to say.

A lot of what barthelon said. The forums weren't hustle and bustle, but they flowed and usually a thread had around two hours before it got moved to the second page by the rapid amount of new threads and posts being slung out. There were a lot of generally dumb, pointless, but fun to interact with threads. Threads like what your favorite TF2 loadout was, what you thought of the recent game or movie that came out, recommend me a game for this system I just bought, how do you think the sequel to this game is going to play out, and whatever else. We still have them, but they're less frequently popping up, and they are starting to get crowded out by "srs bizznizz" discussions about ☐feminism ☐art ☐religion ☐politics ☐journalism ☑moderation.

Another thing to say was that threads seldom ever lasted long enough to see past three pages of comments. It was uncommon to see more than five pages (which usually was a controversial topic full of six people bickering at each other), and there is a handful of threads in the entirety of Gaming Discussion/Off-Topic that ever made it past 30 pages (1000 replies). Threads were bite-sized, but they didn't cater to short attention spans. That's where you started to appreciate regulars and their avatars: you got tiny glimpses of their humor and character, and that's part of what made you like forums as tight-knit as this one. It's speed-dating but for forum-goers.

It's undeniable that the forums are slower than they were before Extra Credits or Jim Sterling left. I think it's a little different in some ways. A lot of threads are still those bite-sized "throw away" threads that you want to post in but forget about by the end of the day, but there are many threads (because they last on the front page of the forum for almost a whole day) that don't have to vie for attention and can get down to controversial or unpopular threads, and people go on them because what else is there to post on?

I am being jaded and looking at the Escapist with rose-tinted glasses, but the forums simply don't interest me anymore. I don't really post in the same topic twice because I hate repeating myself, and after nearly six years and 15,000 posts, I've posted in a lot of threads and gotten enough my opinion out to satisfy me. (Because I only partially post to spread my opinion; mostly I post just to get my thoughts written down). I still check the forums once or twice a day, but I usually only post twice a week because most of the threads don't interest me (feminism-art-religion-politics-journalism-reform) or I feel like I've already given my answer once before and won't bother, even if that answer was from a thread five years ago.

...

Another thing I think of is that it really doesn't feel like I'm a part of conversations anymore. Opinions are getting splashed onto threads without anyone ever looking at what others have to say, or opening up conversations. I used to get several quotes a day, because people were reading what I said and putting forth their thoughts and opinions (which I begrudgingly admit that I enjoyed). I just checked my inbox, and I got 7 quotes in the last 3 months. I know I don't post as often and not as many people are here to reply to them, but that is really low. I don't know if it's a shift of people's attentions, or if it's me writing boring stuff, but I kind of don't like it. Just feels like I'm putting a Sticky Note with my opinion on a bulletin board and walking away without reading, and everyone's doing the same thing and nobody's getting anything out of a thread except the satisfaction of writing the post.

Just doesn't have the same kick to it. I highly doubt I'll last to see post number 16,000, since going from 14,000 to 15,000 took me nearly two years in itself. By then, I'll have abandoned the account, had it closed for personal reasons, or maybe even something bad will've happened to the Escapist. It's been a good 15,000 everyone, and I'm not leaving yet, but it's been fun.

It's no secret that activity here has been declining for a while now. Not always necessarily a bad thing, mind. Definitely sucks at times but not a whole lot an individual can do about it. Mostly separate myself from any semblance of an argument these days, really. It's not worth my time to try to change someone's mind or broaden their perspective here. Barely anyone ever does.

Granted, it's not in my nature to enjoy conflict anyways, so my participation in arguments was already kinda low.

Personally, I'm not ready to move on yet as I've never found a forum quite like this one, for all its flaws. But I do find myself posting with less frequency recently. Still, I might have a nice little streak of posts here or there. It's happened a few times.

Yeah, the forums are a lot slower compared to even just a year, ago. Losing two of the sites tentpole contributors probably had a lot to do with it, the site still has content, and has been noticeably trying to replace Jim and Bob, but nothing they've come up with so far is really on that same level of draw. Really the only major draw left is Yahtzee.

As far as the forums themselves go, the loss of content was a major blow, and so was GG, seriously, the number of regulars and high post level people that got banned within the first months of GG was crazy. Whole threads full of greyed out posts due to people being suspended or banned.

I made a post at about 10:30 AM this morning in the gaming forum, that post is still the most current post in that thread. Not a big deal in and of itself, but that thread is still in the top ten threads on the first page, that means in the last twelve hours less than 10 threads have had posts made in them. I know the site was down for a couple hours this afternoon, but god damn that is glacially slow.

The Religion and politics forum is even worse, you used to have a somewhat decent sized group of posters but that forum is all but dead with topics hanging out on the front page with no new posts made for weeks.

Sucks, but whaddaya gonna do?

Eyup, it's slows these day. I mean I used to make at least over 10 post per day WITHOUT going to the forum game section of this site!

It "feels" like it's slowed because it actually has. A lot.

I wouldn't say it's a ghost town just yet though. More like a dusty country road compared to the inner-city highway that it once was.

I'm in a forum that had "forum is dying" threads for years, and it still is not dead.
You should watch an actually dead forum, it does give you a new perspective on these things.

Basically, if you avoid GID and R&P it's a nice and cozy place right now, especially if you are doing stuff in user groups.

I'm not really surprised things have slowed down. The aggressive noxious trench warfare and constant negativity have drained the fun out of posting. No one actually wants to interchange ideas or bounce opinions off each other anymore, its apparently much safer to just pop in, take some catty passive aggressive potshots, then retreat to the usergroup echo-chamber so you and a bunch of people who think just like you can pat each other on the back and titter and giggle about the stupid losers and their silly views that contradict your (objectively correct) ones.

Okay. That's it. I'm really going to stop lurking this time.

Come on, other lurkers! Come out of your lurking holes! Together we lurkers can save the forum!

Yeah, I was never big on actually actively checking the forums, so my awareness of the changes is not so strong.
I have however, witnessed a lot of people leave..
A lot.

It's no surprise that'd have an effect eventually...

Still, the usergroups can be crazy busy. Of course, before you ask what goes on there, it's worth noting that in my experience, a lot of the time it's just a bunch of people being silly.
It can hardly be considered an echo chamber, if hardly anyone ever really discusses anything remotely serious, right?

Oh... Whatever. I was the last person standing on a forum once.
Literally for the last 3 months before it went down it was me and one other person. If that.
The end.
Now that was a dying forum... XD

Yup. It definitely has slowed down a lot, when we're dealing with non-flamebait topics. I will notice, however, that a low comment count on the Zeropunctuation video isn't that uncommon. Whenever Yahtzee reviews something that's niche/indie/not something a lot of people are interested and invested in, the threads tend to end up being pretty small.

While I pretty rarely post I do plenty of lurking and yeah it has slowed down. Although at times its hard for me to tell, I live in Australia so when I post something in the afternoon there is a good chance the person I'm replying to/ the majority of the site may well be asleep.

I would say that The Escapist canning one of its biggest contributors and letting the other escape is probably to blame. That, and the mess of GG stuff that was posted back when that was starting.

Right now I'd say they have until Yahtzee, Cory, and Grey leave. After that they're hosed.
