I've already sent in my application to join the Royal Marine Commandos. Just waiting to do the fitness and health tests then it's off for 32 weeks of training.

Greed, Anger and Hatred are all in human nature, however war is just a bi-product of that, and isn't neccesarily part of human nature.
For instance, we all feel greed and hatred in our lives, however not all of us have ever liked the idea of war.
Does that make them in-human?
No.
That's a ridiculous thing to say.

Libya was mainly about the oil, that's why they were so interested.
Our governments don't give a fuck about these people, they just want to exploit them.
I don't agree with war being a by-product of hatred and anger. Wars are started by nation or nation like entities. The populace of waring nations may feel hated and anger towards one another but that was hardly the reason for the war in the first place. Wars, at least in modern western civilization, is a way to express one nations will over another. War is the blunt end of the diplomacy stick. When politics fail you simply force your will onto another nation to achieve whatever means wish. It is human nature as it has been going on since the dawn of time.

America didn't not go to war in Afghanistan because they hate the Afghanistan people. Afghanistan is a lawless land without centralized government control. Afghanistan has not been able to control what goes on within it's own boarders. Terrorist organizations comprised of peoples non native to the area were able to move into the country and treat it as their own personal jihadist playground. When these people attacked on 9/11 2001 the natural solution to the problem was to attack then invade their training grounds. Afghanistan has been a world problem for years and the attacks of 9/11 2001 made it an American problem.

I'm in the process of putting together my Warrant Officer Flight Training packet. Took the ASVAB a couple days ago, made a 98 w/ a 137 GT score. Now I've just got to take a few more tests, get a flight physical, do damn well on a PT test and interview with a selection board.

Yeah, good luck with that. Only the Army takes high school dropouts as long as they have a GED, meet massive requirements, and get some pretty extreme luck with the boards. All the other branches will laugh in your face for trying to walk in without a diploma in your hands.
What? No, I was talking about dropping out of college. I already got my diploma. I was saying if I dropped out of college, I would join up.

Was there really any need for that last line?
You even pointed out that i'm from the UK...
Plain confusing.

Also, may i add, that not all wars are based primarily on oil, but with some (i'm crap with names) oil was thought of.
I mean our intervention in Libya, that was not just from 'goodwill', oil was a concern.

And eventually, whole wars will be fought over it, in fact, world wars could be fought over the last few drops.

Military experience would auger well for a career in VG development since it is a prevalent theme in many games.
I'm not sure if I agree with that logic. Sure, they'd often get the odd consultatn or something, maybe, but that's usually about it.
Im talking about getting an actual degree in VG development from DigiPen, the leading school in that field. You don't think that having military experience would be an extra drop in the bucket when it comes to getting work in what can be an extremely transient business?

What army? Iceland doesn't have no and there is no chance in hell I'm joining the Norwegian one. I'd have to converse with Norwegians in Norwegian, and neither of those bode well with me. Better than Danish, but still.

The swedish military is recruiting actively, but I've got no reason to join. One is that I'm a big fat coward, and would suck in a war scenario, and second is that I'm not particularly fond of real life military.

I prefer the ones with laser rifles and evil space emperors commanding them.

Lucky you I was there in the middle of summer. Screw San Antonio in the middle of summer.

I am planning to join the USAF when I graduate but those plans may change depending on some circumstances but that's really what I want to do.

Toying with the idea if I make a balls of college. I'm not very good at anything, and I don't value my life overmuch. Perfect criteria for a grunt.

c/1st Lt Rountree AFJROTC Reporting in!

Though seriously, I plan on going to a military college and getting a commission through AFROTC. I'm already working on my private pilot's license to up my chances of getting that sweet sweet piloting slot. I'm doing it for a plethora of reasons. I think I would love the lifestyle, I want to do something that matters, its stable, ect. If you can think of a reason to join I've probably thought of it. I'm going career so I'm probably going to be doing it for quite awhile.

I'm enlisted in the US Navy DEP and I ship out for boot camp in 20 days. My rating is AECF (advanced electronics computer field). It's gonna be cold in Great Lakes. D:

You will never ever catch me joining the military.

All this stuff about 'Honour' and 'Serving your country' is bullshit.
Besides, it's going to be more glaringly obvious that all these wars are fought for is oil...
Read through the thread again, and I had to pick this one out and comment.

The stuff about honour, courage, brotherhood, serving something other than yourself (etc) is certainly not bullshit. In fact, there's a blatantly obvious reason it's there. It's something soldiers are taught purely because they need that mental boost when the shit hits the fan. You need to have a reason to keep going when the bullets are flying - and a very strong mental motivator is feeling you're part of something bigger, and feeling you're doing what's right. -That- is why these things exist - at least at the core.

As for reasons why wars are faught - it's human nature, plain and simple. We will never live in a world without war. Ever.

See a lot of American's posting here so thought i'd put in a voice from across the pond. Currently starting recruitment in the Royal Military Police with the Territorial Army (that's reservist force if none of you know). Going to swear oaths on Tuesday with any luck!
