Yep, I played the demo on one of those demo disc Sony would give away randomly. I really liked it so my brother and I bought it. Sadly, I only got the first one because I was broke back then (In my early teens) and I never found out there was a sequel until much, much later.
Either way, it was awesome. I loved the different gadgets and the monkey's personalities and the different ways they would react to you.

Two words: hells yes. It was, and still is, up there with some of my favorite games ever. Shame my brother was an idiot and left the disc laying around so now it's all scratched to hell. Hmm seems I need to add another game to the list of games I want to get when I get money.

When I was a kid, I attended this really shitty daycare where the evil - not exaggerating, evil - "caretakers" treated all of the kids like shit, except for their own son, whom they treated like a prince and made into the nastiest little brat ever.

So, yeah, I spent a lot of time watching that little fuck play Ape Escape, which I always wanted to play because I loved Dinoaurs and it looked fun as hell. But no, apparently Ape Escape was reserved for His Royal Prattiness.

Off topic, REALLY not exaggerating about the daycare. Saw them hit one of the kids once. Just a four-year-old.

Sadly the closest I ever got was stocking the sequels into shelves in a department store and playing that really awesome Ape Escape inspired mini-game included in MGS3.

Well, we were kids, when you're at that age, you just assume all adults are doing the right thing, no matter what. So, I don't know, I guess none of us even thought to mention it. Or no one believed us. For the most part, we all just sort of went along with it and waited until we could go home.

I played the first 2 games back in the day. Good stuff, though the lack of proper camera control would probably bug the shit out of me now.

I also loved how all the characters had British accents. Somehow it fit the whole anime aesthetic like a glove.

You're damn right I played it!
I played the shit out of it!
I even 100%'d Ape Escape 3, and goddamn, were they awesome.
Oh, and as others have pointed out, it's not the least bit obscure, it's a PS1 classic, like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon.

Hell yes! That game, along with the Croc series, defines my childhood gaming.

Ape Escape was so ahead of it's time. shame the sequels didn't live up to what the original presented.

I only played the first one, but I loved it. If I was going to go and find and old PS, than Ape Escape is one of the games that I'd have to go and dig out for a replay.

Funnily enough I did, but not as a child. I picked it up about 2 years ago at a Second Hand store, even though I never played any of them. It just seemed like something id like. Turned out to be quite good. I got stuck on one part, and didnt finish it.

The control scheme is absolutely terrible, but yeah, it's a classic. I used to play it all the time.
