Does anyone know a game that is said to be one of the greatest games ever made, yet no matter how hard you try to like it, how many chances you give it, you just can't see what everyone is carrying on about?
Mine would have to be Final Fantasy XII. It just wouldn't click. The characters bored me and the combat was lame. It broke the formula I loved way to much.

Halo. It was fun, but it was repetitive, and the level design was some of the worst I've seen in a shooter.

I also could never get into the Sims.

Agreed 100%, though admittedly I was never big on the Final Fantasy series so I can't say I loved it so much as I enjoyed it. FFX holds a special place in my heart, though, for being the game that bonded me with my first (now ex-)girlfriend.

Back to the topic. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Maybe it's because the Wii's controls are still foreign to me, but I had a really hard time getting into it because of them. Playing the game I felt like an infant learning how to walk, and I couldn't kill that feeling enough to play it longer than an hour.

The Darkness, I suppose. Certainly, the graphics were excellent, the hell sequences were great, the whole story was quite well fleshed out, they came up with the idea of the character's eyes adjusting to the light before Capcom could pull their socks on, but the combat sucked a big fat one and some of the gameplay dynamics were overused to the point of making me want to kill myself. Which:

SPOILER WARNING! AVERT YOUR HUMAN EYES!

you inevitably do. Twice.

What's the difference between this thread and the one that was about "most over hyped games ever" we had a couple weeks ago?

All versions of Smash Brothers after the N64 version. I can't follow what the hell is going on.

You could acknowledge that a game is a good game, you might even see why others go gaga over it, but you yourself just can't get into it.

Like, for instance, me and Morrowind or Myst. Like the pretty, like the concept, I can see why other people love them, but too much text for me. If I want to read a book, I'll read a book. Gah.

Bioshock. After watching Zero Punctuation's review which brought up all kinds of System Shock memories, I found it hard to get into. I only played about three hours before calling it quits. Perhaps I will try a marathon session to see it will peak my interest before giving up. I normally play games about an hour at a time.

Silent Hill 2.
Yes, it had story, yes, it was atmospheric and yes, it was generally scary at times but the controls were ridiculously stiff and unresponsive and I usually don't like wondering around for ages, trying to find a key and then finding out that I needed to trigger a cut scene by trying to get an easily missed key on the ground that would somehow make the other key available. And that's not even mentioning the camera.
I know it's just supposed to be an ordinary guy but that isn't a good enough excuse to fuck up what I consider to be the most important part of a game (controls).

Yes. Starcraft! Most definitely Starcraft. Even when it was new it was nothing special at all. Story, Graphics, Gameplay, it was all pretty bland and felt empty.
The videos were good, technically, but again, not really good. Even the Krossfire Intro and Briefings easily bested them in terms of atmosphere and content.

Most shooters, honestly. It's really tough for me to get into the things if they aren't outstanding.

Fallout - 1&2.

Played them recently. They're good, and I can see why they were thought of as excellent.

It's not that I have a problem with playing old games now. I still often do. Some old games just have that something which will keep me playing them anyway. The Fallouts didn't

Sure, they are certainly still something different - I really enjoyed the style of the artwork. The gameplay was fun, I like the over-the-top gore and the sense of humour. But, still, I just found myself wanting to get through the games and get them over with. I couldn't quite see what all that damned fuss is about.

Mario. I'm sorry. I really am. But I can't stand that little plumber and the dynasty he has created. Call me what you will, but I never liked those games.

I had digital devil saga 1. I thought it was supposed to be really good. It was eccentric in a good way but the game wasn't a home run.
Jade Empire: IGN gave it a 9.9. It's an offline f***ing FETCH QUEST!
