Apparently they're still making those Overwatch animated shorts.

Awwww.

As a sucker for sympathetic robots and wordless storytelling in animation, I love it.

The bird clearly knows when it's onto a good thing. Ain't nobody going to fuck with that nest.

Well no...nobody but Bastion himself :p Seeing as he trashed the nest all on his own.

I did find it kind of funny/interesting that they gave him the robotic version of PTSD.

The plot structure is about as vanilla and cliche as it gets, but that animation is so good I can overlook it. Danged bird, so adorable, didn't even need to be anthropomorphized.

I really don't see the appeal of putting your game's story and characterization OUTSIDE your game. It's a big part of what drove me away from Overwatch.

Anyone care to try to explain the appeal of doing things this way?

The 'appeal' is that Overwatch is a multiplayer-only game. So, story doesn't get in the way for those who only care about gameplay, but is easily accessible to those who do want it. This is a practice that goes back decades (Warhammer, Magic: The Gathering, etc.), and in videogames, dates back to at least the 2000s (TF2, League of Legends, etc.). Overwatch isn't the first nor the last to employ this tactic.

Frankly, I'm fine with it. Don't even play Overwatch and I like keeping up with the lore.

Well, TF2 released shorts as recently as a year or two ago, so it's not exactly unprecedented.

As for the short itself;

Definitely very Miyazaki-esque. Blizzard has always excelled in the cutscenes department, and this is no exception. Yes it's rather formulaic, but it's done so well that I don't mind one bit. The only major downside is that it makes me REALLY not want to kill Bastion players.

I think at some point they steal the plot of a well-known episode from "Happy tree friend".
You know, the one episode which the Soldier Bear hear the bird hitting the tree and have flashbacks from war and he eventually become postal and start killing his buddies?
We need a fan art or Bastion and Soldier Bear together becoming psychos.

The same goes with the most FNAF series fans: Don't like the game but the story is the sh*t!!! Right now the developer throw a new teaser and oh my what a wonderful thing it was for me and for the fans.

Basically Iron Giant, but much shorter and much less well done. But I liked the war bit. At the very least it told me that there were other people who used Reinhardt's armor other than himself, which I never really considered up until now.
