A bit of both. I love appearance, but if this G-String of Power will make me immortal, count me in!
Pretty much this, although I would prefer appearance over stats, but there is a limit to how low i'll keep my stats before finally taking the plunge into fuck-ugly territory

This right here. I also take the same stance in real life--practicality over fashion every single time.

For me, it depends on what stage of the game I'm in. If it's early, and I have a choice between looking good and kicking 10% more ass than before, I'm going to look good. In the middle game where perhaps I'm consistently challenged, I'll slip into stats. In the endgame, however, I want to look like the badass I am, and flaunt it. :)

Style over Substance; the cyberpunk way.

Visuals could be a stat! People in multiplayer games will probably compliment your metrosexuality, you're there to impress and have fun anyways. Now games that allow you to reskin items such as Aion are pretty neat. Also lol TF2

I have continued using inferior equipment because I preferred how it looked. However I will usually only do this to a point. If the gap becomes too huge, I'll cave and use the shitty looking gear.

When I played Fallout 3 I wore that trader coat (the one with pots and eating utensils) the entire game. I also used the bolt action rifle pretty much exclusively.

Because that game was so easy it just didn't matter. But, in an MMO I'll probably take the better stats

I pretty much agree there. :D In fact, while playing Mass Effect I found it hilarious when I discovered that at the time my best armor was the one colored pink and white. It certainly made (male)Shepard look manly and tough in my opinion.

Even in games like Oblivion, my looks are hugely important to me if my character is customizable. I'm really vain, I know. :|

Well, I can handle lower stats. I'm a good gamer. I enjoy making things more difficult for me anyway, as long as it's still possible to win with the worse gear, I'll go for looks over stats any time. :)

I see this as a problem most RPG's face. What I think the reason is, is the fact that finding (and using) a single piece of armor never really worked in real-life. If they would (like with the gladiators back in the days, they could choose one or two pieces of armor and a weapon), it would all be made out of the same materials and it would still look good. What the solution might be is giving armor bonusses based on that piece of armor matching with other armors. A broad kind of set bonusses. Most armors in games are designed from a set-perspective anyway. Also, making armor upgradable and customizable with enchants, runes, etc. is a good idea to let people look good while still retaining the randomness.

Where am I in this? I prefer good looks, but I never follow up on it.

As a very, very visual person, I always pick appearance over stats. A friend of mine got consistent amusement from my obsessively coordinated armor in a co-op RPG. Her rogue looked like she had dived into a closet in the darkness, grabbed whatever she could find, and decided it was good enough- but her stats had gotten a ridiculously huge boost from the horrible outfit. My mage, however, was clad in carefully matched, color-coordinated, decent looking clothes... which had mediocre stat boosts at best. But they looked good, dammit.

I like looking good in real life, too. I'm not the type to obsessively shop for clothes (as a matter of fact, I hate clothes shopping), but I like messing with the clothes I do have. Perhaps that's part of it?

...Oh goodness, the hats. I got to the point where I didn't even look at them. I just sold 'em as soon as I got 'em.

Appearence of stats every singe time, in RPGs I just use weapons and clothes that suit the place where I am, if I am in the wastlands I will be using a sherif's coat and hat and maybe a hunting rifle or a assault rifle.

In Oblivion I use always use leather armor unless I am sneaking around, in that case I use the dark brotherhood armor.

In S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I wold use a basic armor when I am walking around the zone, and when I am underground or in Pripyat I wold use a SEVA suit or exo-squeleton.

I do this just because I like to look cool in games.

yeah I always disliked power armour in the fallout games, it just never felt right for my charachter or situation (except say...those few big battles in fallout 3)

thhankfully fallout 3/nv are games where you can get away with it

When i play RPGs i always have to make a decision, a few more stats towards an attribute and have to wear something that doesn't match the rest of my armor or the opposite, get some more stats and look slightly ridiculous.

In almost all of these occurrences i will choose to keep my matching appearance over an item that will give me a few more points to my endurance. Obviously if it is a huge bonus to a stat i will choose the stats over appearance, i'm not THAT stupid.

So what about you Escapist? Would you rather keep a matching suit of Finely crafted elven armor, or walk around with a pair of green shorts that do not match the rest of your outfit what so ever?
Stats over visuals, because the game mechanics are usually based off stats.

However, wouldn't it be interesting and cool to see a game driven by how people see your appearance? Not just a "fashion model" type game, but any game based off social interaction could use something like that.

But alas, my suggestions will probably be forgotten under endless games based off warfare conflict rather than intrigue and social skills.
well there were a few bonuses in fallout for my charachter talking to people in sexy underwear

Usually I don't really care how I look in game. I make some exception for outrageously stupid items, but otherwise I wear what makes me most powerful.

Usually, I pick looks over stats, especially in Fallout. I have Power Armor stashed in my Presidental Suite but I go around with Reinforced Leather Armor 'cause it makes me look BA.

If your success depends mostly on stats, I don't really have a choice. But if I can manage without the extra stats, I'll pick appearance. And I tend to eradicate all opposition either way.

I never ever wore a headpiece in Dragon Age for that very reason. When it comes to armor, I seldom choose looks over stats unless the stats are marginally better.
At least in DA2, you could choose not to display your helm.

...I have probably spent more time looking for decent looking armor/clothing mods for Dragon Age 2/trying stuff on in-game than I have spent actually playing the game. Appearance over stats, every time.

God, those awful hats from the first game... *shudder*
I also miss the leather armor from the first game. The different robes, too. And the medium-level armor appearance. Pretty much everything in 2 looks absolutely horrible. Don't even get me started on those weird jutting chest-shelf things on the champion's armor.
