Visual over stat unless its a fight that stats are required to win. As my New Vegas character is level 50, that isn't much so normally I walk around with a Duster from Lonesome Road, a cowboy hat of some sort and a big revolver or pistol. Makes you feel bad ass taking on a pile of Fiends.

if it's a huge boost i'll go for the stat but if it's a small boost but will make me look stupid it wouldn't be worth it

If I can get away with it, or if I can enchant my own gear, I'll place a moderate amount of importance on aesthetic appeal. I did that with my DragonFable character by using Dragonlord's wings and Sapphire hood because they complement my character's class outfit, those items have good stats, but not the best I can get as my character's back and head pieces.

In Demon's Souls, I chose my armor to get as close as possible to half my max equip weight so I currently have chain helm, Gloom chestpiece, and leather gloves and boots and can still evade quickly.

Of course, if something is overpowered enough, I'll use it regardless of it's appearance.

It's hard to see why other games don't go the same route as LOTRO - you get several clothing sets for appearances only that you can freely switch between, and what you're actually using for stats doesn't show up on your avatar unless you actually choose that. City of Heroes did something similar, but costumes in that game had no attached stats anyway.

Actually, this happens to me in CoD games. If the gun has useless features, it really gets under my skin. The unusable bi-pod on the FAMAS and the fact that it's sights hover slightly disconnected to the gun in blackops makes it so I can't use the gun without getting annoyed. The G11's extra magazines on the sides being just part of the model and unable to be used also annoys me greatly.

Thus, I stick with something simple like the MPL.

If im a good enough player (which I always am) I don't really rely on stats, so I can wear whatever I want.

Slight upgrade? Go with Style. Really cool item? Keep for a while. Big upgrade? Switch.

I think it was LOTR Online that did it best. Use one set of equipment for stats, but also have an optional second set simply for appearance. This is how it should be done. Always.

I too usually pick aesthetics over stats.

I do it quite a lot, unless there's a huge difference. I never helmets in games for this reason though.

I wore the mercenary armor in Dragon Age II trough half the game, because the only other thing i could find and wear was those ugly mage's robes. Those didn't fit with the personality of Female Wizard Hawke. I changed to a slightly uglier armor about halfway trough, when i finally found one armor which didnt need a maximized strength or constitution.

Who is the idiot who thought it a good idea to limit clothes to level, class or ability? Or even limit food to level? Its stupid. Except from a game-mechanical standpoint, where it actually makes sense. Maybe they should apply the same thing to the ground... "Sorry, you cant stand on grass until level 15!" Then they wouldnt need to put level-restrictive doors everywhere.

I always go fro even the smallest stat boost, except when something looks really awesome, then I will try to convince my self using it has some tactical advantage.

I thought the mage outfits were very badly designed within the story and theme of the game. Templars everywhere, massive chantry presence, so the best thing to do as a mage is obviously to walk around in a dress carrying a staff.

Riiight...

Like you, I just wore the 'armour' mage outfits, or just plain armour.

In Fable: TLC I spent the whole time shirtless to show off my tattoo and manly manly chest. I even emphasised how shirtless I was by wearing all of Archon's armour except the breast plate. Also I swapped the helmet for a wizards hat. So I'm going with visuals. Luckily in most other games I have the luxury of the armour I like the most also being the most powerful. Nothing says badass like an entire car's worth of plate armour.

Stats are better than appearance, in some games like Fallout you don't even need to see yourself at all. Although if the armour set provides a bonus itself like in Dragon Age I may keep the armour set than upgrade for a helmet that loses the armour bonus for 1 extra point of defence.

Almost always visuals.

I remember getting some really awesome purple shoulders in WoW that were 2x as good as the ones I had.

Then I saw they were pink/purple and I was a Tauren wearing browns and leathers in appearance.

Sold 'em.

This is why MMO's need appearance slots.

When it comes to outfits in RPG's I either want my character to look A) badass or B) ridiculous. Or a bit of both. The worst thing for me is to look completely bland. For example in my previous fallout NV play through my energy weapon character found a space suit. It had a decent dt for my level, a high passive radiation resistance and looked absolutely hilarious. For me it gave the chacter a measure of individuality and I kept it the whole way through the the game even though it ceased to be useful. I would show you a picture but I fail at the internet and have no idea how to embed. In my current fallout 3 I found the chinese stealth armor which made me litterally undetectable and looked awesome. Then I found a pre war bonnet that looked inasnely out of place especially on top of the stealth armor so I wear that all the time now. Again I wish I could embed. So yeah, I'll just go with whatever I feel like at the time.
