We may collect information such as occupation, language, zip code, area code, unique device identifier, location, and the time zone where an Apple product is used so that we can better understand customer behaviour and improve our products, services, and advertising
Don't like it, don't use the product. Certainly don't then get all pissy and or indignant when something you were made aware of is finally waved under your nose by the media scaremongerers...

... Why? I mean, really, why?

What are they using this data for?
Steve Jobs wants to know where you are at all times, especially to see if you are lined up in the freezing cold to buy his latest plastic p.o.s.

Or maybe he is tracking the whereabouts of his richest customers so he knows when they are out of the house...

From what I've read, the patent also includes software to let the iPhone take covert pictures of its surroundings, log any communication, and so on. The stated reason - to take action against 'inappropriate use'.

So, stolen phones, right?

The cited example was jailbreaking.

Only the government is allowed to track your movements!!!!

Anyway this is pretty shitty, I hope Apple has to remove this. However, turns out that Android and Windows Phone 7 or w/e they called it are also tracking.

I've made no bones about the fact that I can't stand the Apple cult and the people who must run out to buy the latest dropping of white plastic that emerges from those stuck-up fools in Cupertino. While I respect the iPhone as a great device, I dislike the closed platform model and that Apple charges such a premium for its "cool products."

So I love that this privacy thing might blow up to become a huge black eye for the company that could stand to be brought down a few pegs in the hipster pantheon.
To be honest, this annoys me. This should be news, so you should at least pretend to unbiased. In blogs and such it's different, but in a news post I think it should be reported without bias.

Not that I love Apple. I pretty much agree with everything you actually said. My second iPod touch has begun to die because of the same problem that my first one died of.

They can track your location, but I think it's only done in the event of a crime that the phone may be used to track down the suspect. In any case, they aren't saving and uploading ALL the information about where it goes.

ARRRRRRRGHGHGHG!!!!!!!!

Between this and Sony's giant clusterfuck, is anyone else considering cutting themselves off? I'm getting pretty sick of these giant corporations screwing around with all our private info like it's nothing.

That's right. As long as the phone is connected to a network, the network knows where it is.
