i was talking to my GF today and the subject of cats came up. I have 4 and each one is a full on family member (i squirt all my family members with a watergun if they climb on the curtains or eat the houseplants).

We were talking about how cats are not considered a manly pet. for the most part i am inclined to ignore anyone who makes decisions based on how "manly" they are, but i couldn't deny that i understood where she was coming from. It was a cliche from grade school where boys had dogs and girls had cats, we never questioned why, we were 8 we never questioned anything. But this is 2009, the age of the internet and lolcats and youtube. Do people still honestly think that a person's choice in pets may risk betraying their gender?

Ever try taking a shower after losing a fight with a cat? Its not a fun experience (It burns like hell!) I've never had a wrestling match with my dog where the pain lasted as long as a fight with my cat.

What's so unmanly about cats? They're independent, more self-sufficient than dogs, very good predators, and come in giant varieties in the wild.

The only way I could see an accusation of non-masculinity would come from a guy who doesn't appreciate an animal who won't submit to his ego.

What?! Cats aren't manly?! Whoever told you that obviously never pissed one off... or heard of lions and whatnot.

one of the cats managed to put a gash in my girlfriend's arm that still hasn't healed, and that was a few months ago. She wasn't even the target of the attack, she was just sitting on the couch when a fight broke out between two cats next to her.

I used to think having cats made me less manly, but then I realized it was giving a crap about what other people thought was manly that made me less manly.

Lions are cats. Lions are manly. By that logic, cats are manly.
That is the Transitive Property.
OT: I don't realy care if they are or not the only cat I will ever have is Spike the cat that was with my parents before I was, but he is gone now so unless someone clones him I will never put up with a litter box again.

A cat can't add to one's manliness, but, so long as it is not you "Fluffy little snookie ookums," is shouldn't damage one's manliness either. It's like having a female friend. So long as you remain manly, you are manly.

I prefer dogs, myself. Big, dopey dogs.

Edit: Cats are like boats, they're automatically considered female regardless of their gender.

Well, there you are. If you knew it did that, did you really have to ask?

Piss one off, see how that goes. Dogs will bite, cats will bite and scratch the hell out of you.

Case closed.

There are two types of people who should own cats. Women and evil geniuses living in secret lairs waiting for secret agents to show up.

Since you don't look like no evil genius, process of elimination states...
