Are concerts really that brutal?

Hell, I must be getting old, but last time I went to a Slayer gig people were insane. I'm all for a bit of pushing and shoving and what not down in front but these guys were duking it out in a ring, the fuckers. I blame Trivium though as it were their fans. The rest of us were there to have fun, not to be punched by kids. In this case kids between 15 and 20 I'd guess. The fuckers. They still make me annoyed.

As plenty other posters have said, it really depends on the band and their fans. In my experience, older (better) bands have better and less insane fans. Iron Maiden tends to have better concerts, and other Slayer gigs I've been at were better. In my mind the real metal heads are not there to fight, punch or whatever. We're there for the music. Mind you, I'm pretty selective when it comes to music and I seldom go see a band younger than 1991.

It does sound like it's a bit different other places though.

That whole thing on the video from Lamb of God makes me pissed. I can't fathom why they would encourage that.

Ahh, this all reminds me of a gig with a local band death metal band. During one song some twat down in front kept being a dick and bothering the other people there. When the song ended the lead singer jumped down from the stage and gave the jerk two or three punches and left him in a bad shape, got back on stage and said something like: 'I don't wanna see that shit here. If anyone starts a fight it's gonna be me!' Good times.

/old fart rant

So here's the deal: I'm a huge fan of metal, and everyone I know tells me that if I set my foot in a metal concert, I will wake up with my spine poking out of my mouth. But I've seen bunch of live videos, if only for compensate. And when I saw a few videos of In Flames, they barely seemed to move at all. They just stood there, jumping a little on the same place. This is probably a stupid question, I've known people who've broken ribs and passed out during concerts, but are all this brutal, and if so, why are they so stupid to knock each other out? Isn't the meaning of a concert to enjoy the music? If I want to pass out while listening to music, I'll wrestle in a ring while the radio plays Slipknot.

EDIT: If it helps, the bands I'm aiming at seeing live are In Flames, Trivium, and possibly Children of Bodom and Rob Zombie. If we're not talking metal, I want to see Depeche Mode, Billy Talent and Muse. There, now you have some reference.
DEPECHE MODE!

I went to their concert in Parken in Copenhagen this Tuesday and I was absolutely blwon away.

I didn't have one of those standing spots, I had a seat on the side. It wasn't brutal at all, except maybe there were 3 drunk Swedish guys in front of me that had trouble knowing where their place ended and mine started. It was ok.

The concert itself was awesome.

At metal shows people TRY to hurt people your much safer at a hardcore show, theres at least a tight knit atmosphere there where if you get knocked down they'll pick you back up. Metal shows have a lot more crazy sadists out to make people cry.

I went to download festival in `06 and had no real problems provided you stay away from the pit ,though i do intend to go in and break some limbs (or most likely get my limbs broken)one day when the line-up isn`t shit ,however from what i`ve heard you should stay the hell away from slayer gigs

I haven't really been to any big concerts (150-200 people at the most, and most expensive was $12), but I saw Rise Against a little over 4 years ago, back when barely anyone had ever heard of them... Was 14 at the time and went into the mosh pit with a few of my friends that were the same age... I'm actually surprised that I didn't really get hurt at all from being in there with a bunch of drunk people twice my age... Best concert I've ever been to too...

Most violent I have been to was Disturbed when they were in Sydney. The mosh pit was going off and fights were breaking out everywhere. A guy got stabbed after a fight broke out and he lost a lot of blood before security got him to an ambulance. The side of one of the stands was literally painted in his blood!

Be prepared to get hit if you enter a mosh pit, at the least you'll get shoved around, at the worst you'll fall to the ground. If you stand just a few rows back or sit in the stands you shouldn't have any problems.

I regularly go to metal concerts,as i listen to runk/rock/metal/irish (wee) and the last i went to was Sabaton/Hammerfall and before that Blind Guardian and AC/DC but its not brutal at all. Grab a beer and jump into a "pit" and go home bruised or stand at the side jump around and sing to the tunes and go home just drunk, concerts are far too fun to miss

UNLESS its a death metal concert, then, your screwed
Does In Flames count as death metal? They are known as melodeath, but a big portion of their fan base have disappeared due to them getting more mainstream (not that that is a bad thing).

Meh, you should be OK with those bands, and you don't have to go in the mosh pit. If you do fall over, you usually get picked up.

People who are dicks usually get pwnt, when I went to see Down one time, some asshole was just running around in the pit flailing his fists and elbows an knocking people over, so some big bad ************ broke his nose for him... He stopped being a twat after that.

Kind of depends on the band. And then on the people, but bands tend to have semi-distinct fanbases.

It does vary on the kind of music being played and the kind of crowd. Most gigs are fine, be prepared to take a few injuries, everyone gets them but you just go with a flow and look out for each other. However I will say if you find yourself in a wall of death just accept that you will be covered in bruises after :)

Just use common sense. I've been to bands that have one show in the same venue that are more or less normal than two years later it's a brawl.

Just go with the flow and if trouble brews casually move to a different part of the crowd.

Also, if people can climb up on stage don't go near the stage there is always some numbskull who stage dives feet first.

I've gone to alot of concerts in my life. Almost all of them metal. I've seen some injuries yes, but much less severe than when those stupid throwdown kids show up. You know who I mean, the ones that windmill, or pick up change, or grab fruit, or spin and kick people in the face. Those people are the ones really responsible for the injuries. I remember an In Flames/Devil Driver show in T.O, I got into the pick and got kicked in the face but one of those jackasses. I stood back up, drilled him one in the mouth, and everyone who just wanted to have a "Mosh Pit" (That is running around, banging into each other with shoulders and etc) cheered, then we continued our fun.

Its not so much the show, or even the pit ... just the types of people that are in there. In my old band, we stopped playing midway through a show because we wanted one of those kids thrown out of the pit by security (the last show he had been swinging his arms like an idiot and punched my bass players g/f in the back of the head, while she was trying to get some photos, and then both my bass player and I hopped off the stage, beat his ass and threw him out of the bar)Wow, that was a long bracket. Once security threw him out we kept playing.

And the Wall of Death is fun, as are Devil Driver's circle pits. The last one in Toronto was about 700 people. All running in the same direction, until a handful of people large or small turn around and charge. It was good times.

But if someone gets knocked down, at least in Canada, Europe and New York state, other nearby members of the pit will pick em back up and make sure they're ok.
